SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This November will see two meteor showers and a lunar eclipse grace the skies. The Northern Taurid meteor shower will skirt across our atmosphere on Nov. 11-12, according to EarthSky. The event is also expected to produce about five meteors per hour, but the shower is famous for its slow-moving and bright meteors. The next week, the Leonid meteor shower will peak on Nov. 16-17. That shower is expected to produce 15 to 20 meteors per hour. NASA says the Leonid shower happens every November and features some of the fastest moving meteors out there, traveling at about 44 miles per second.Stargazers are encouraged to get the best viewing of the meteor shower by finding an area away from lights and laying flat, with feet facing east, to take in as much sky as possible, according to NASA. The best viewing time will be around midnight and last until dawn. Then to cap off the month, on Nov. 30, a penumbral lunar eclipse will visible throughout North America. The moon will appear slightly darker because the sun, Earth, and moon are imperfectly aligned. The Earth will block some of the sun's light from directly hitting the moon, covering all or part of the moon with the outer part of its shadow.A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are imperfectly aligned. When this happens, the Earth blocks some of the Sun's light from directly reaching the Moon's surface and covers all or part of the Moon with the outer part of its shadow, also known as the penumbra, according to Space.com. 1543

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Washington Nationals will look to a former San Diego State Aztec to lead them into Game 2 of the 2019 World Series.Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg takes the mound Wednesday night against the Astros, dueling with Houston ace Justin Verlander. Washington took Game 1 Tuesday night 5-4 to open the series, the team's first World Series appearance and game won on the grandest stage in baseball. Now as Strasburg makes his World Series debut, San Diegans will be watching and rooting for the former Aztecs star.RELATED: SDSU's Jalen McDaniels starts NBA season on Hornets rosterMark Martinez, Strasburg's pitching coach during his time in San Diego, said the pitcher has been heavily involved in the university's baseball program since leaving for the big leagues. "He knows a lot of our guys. He comes and works out in the off-season. So he's connected to our program so there's a big sense of pride with our guys," Martinez, now team head coach, told reporters Tuesday. "You can hear them out there talking about Stephen. He's just done so much for our program, you know, being involved with our guys. And backing them not just on the baseball field but in life lessons as well."Strasburg was named to the SDSU Hall of Fame in 2014, boasting college records for the most strikeouts in a game (23), in a season (195), and in a college career (375). He also holds the SDSU record for lowest career ERA at 1.59. During his senior year, he marked his final collegiate home appearance by pitching a no-hitter.RELATED: Padres focus new manager hire between two candidatesLike his college career, Strasburg's MLB post season has been nothing short of impressive. He walks into Game 2 with a 3-0 record in the playoffs, pitching a 1.64 ERA. He ended the regular season with a 18-6 record, a career high. The ball is in Strasburg's court — well, glove — now."You know it's going to be a storm out there. You're going to weather it," Strasburg told the Associated Press ahead of his start. And Strasburg now joins some recent Aztecs who have also notched MLB post season appearances. The last SDSU alumnus to appear in a World Series game was former outfielder Quintin Berry with the 2013 Boston Red Sox, according to Baseball-Reference.com. Also hailing from SDSU, Cleveland Indians outfielder Greg Allen played in the 2018 American League Division Series and former Red Sox pitcher Addison Reed took the mound during the 2017 ALDS.Martinez and players will host a watch party for Strasburg's start at the Mission Valley's Oggi's Pizza and Brewhouse at 5 p.m. Wednesday. 2590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego is taking extra precautions with cruise lines amid heightened awareness surrounding the coronavirus.About 38 ships are expected to dock in San Diego through May, some shops that rely on travelers are concerned business may slow down if cruises are canceled. Some say they've already noticed a change. The Port of San Diego says they installed these hand washing stations once the coronavirus concerns started rising. More stations arrived in San Diego Friday ahead of a ship's expected arrival on Saturday.RELATED COVERAGE:San Diego event organizers temper coronavirus fears21 on cruise ship off California test positive for virusIt's common to see tourists flocking to Seaport Village, providing local businesses with much of their revenue."They like to travel through the stores and we get a lot of business from them," Marion Smart, who has worked at Eclipse Sunglasses for 16 years, says. "This is a tourist community, very much so."But recently Smart says she's noticed business is slowing down and concerns over the coronavirus might be to blame."As you can see it's kind of empty right now," Smart said. "Being that people try these on, I always spray them I disinfect them and this is the solution."Smart usually sees a boost in business when cruise ships dock in San Diego. Saturday, the Holland America Oosterdam is expected to arrive with more than 2,000 passengers on board.RELATED COVERAGE:San Diego County officials urge coronavirus preparednessMiami cancels two music festivals scheduled for later this month amid fears of the coronavirusBut, as reports circulate about the White House considering to warn travelers from going on cruises, the Port says San Diego's economy could take a big hit. Each ship homeported here brings in an estimated million through the roughly nine-month season."Our market specifically is the Mexican Rivera," said Joel Valenzuela, the maritime director for Port. "That's almost 0 million in economic impact to the region."Valenzuela says before boarding, passengers are screened and once off the ship, precautions are in place."We've done things such as increasing sanitation areas within the port facilities, as well as setting aside some prescreening and quarantine areas in case the cruise lines would need it," Valenzuela said. For Smart, she's just hoping more questions about the coronavirus will be answered and things can finally get back to what they once were."I don't know how bad it's gonna get, how good it's going to get but hopefully it passes," Valenzuela said. The Port says so far none of the cruises have been canceled, but that could change at any moment. 2671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is warning San Diegans about a mysterious and possibly deadly counterfeit drug being traded on the streets. The department says they believe the pills have caused four overdose deaths in San Diego County over the last 36 hours. The deaths happened in Valley Center, Santee, Poway and Lakeside. “It’s being traded and sold on the streets with the promise of a painkiller high, but no one really knows what exactly is in the drug which makes it so dangerous,” the department said. Authorities say the pills are blue with one side marked by an "M" while the other side is stamped with a "30." The department says the pills are often called "M-30s" or "blues."While the department doesn't know exactly what's in the pills, investigators say these type of pills often contain fentanyl or carfentanil.Anyone with information is urged to call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. If you or someone you know is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, the department says you can call the County Crisis Hotline at (888) 724-7240. 1116
