In the face of the pandemic, some major chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Gold’s Gym have already filed for bankruptcy. But others are hoping technology and personalized training could help them save brick and mortar gyms.“Last year, I had one knee replaced. I'm scheduled to have the other one this fall,” said 69-year-old Larry Fulhorst. He hadn’t been to a gym in 40 years, but he needed to work on building strength in his legs.A Facebook post led him to a hi-tech fitness studio promising results without needing to spend hours sweating away in a crowded gym.“This sounds too good to be true 20 minutes twice a week," said Fulhorst. The Exercise Coach is a smart fitness studio that trades dumbbells and treadmills for artificial intelligence and robotics. Technology diagnoses strengths and weaknesses in real time.“We use sensors to actually get a feel for the exact muscular makeup and abilities of an individual and then we use that that personal data to generate appropriate strength training,” explained Bryan Cygan, the CEO and founder of The Exercise Coach.The programs are geared primarily toward people who haven’t worked out in years or are starting to exercise for the first time.“Generally, people in their 40, 50s, 60s and even beyond who want real results from a workout but don't want to spend a lot of time exercising,” said Cygan.With many big box gyms filing for bankruptcy as gym goers are weary about coronavirus, smart fitness studios are pivoting in.Compressed workouts, personal trainers and no crowds are key.“It works because our workout isn't an hour long of sweaty cardio. (KGTV) — La Mesa's police chief will retire after more than five years in the role and following unrest over the police department's policing tactics.Chief Walt Vasquez announced Thursday that he will retire effective Aug. 27. LMPD says Vasquez delayed his retirement when the coronavirus hit in mid-March in order to continue serving through the pandemic."Over the past five years, our team has worked very hard to keep the citizens of La Mesa safe. The decrease in property and violent crimes in the City from 2015 to 2019 has been the largest decrease of all incorporated cities in San Diego County," Vasquez said in a statement. "This is extraordinary, especially when you take into consideration that the La Mesa Police Department is one of the lower staffed departments in the County. Crime decreases of this nature are only achieved through hard work and collaboration with the citizens we serve."Vasquez most recently was top cop after a controversial arrest video surfaced, showing a Black man, Amaurie Johnson, being shoved into a sitting position and arrested by a white cop. The cop that was at the center of that video is no longer employed by the city. Johnson has since filed a lawsuit against the city and the officers involved.Following the arrest, and on the heels of nationwide calls for police reform, a protest outside of La Mesa Police Department on May 30 saw a 59-year-old woman shot in the face by a bean bag round during the demonstration and hospitalized, bringing the department's response tactics into question. An investigation into that incident and the officer involved is still being conducted.As calls for police reform continued locally and across the nation, the department followed other law enforcement agencies and banned the carotid restraint technique.Prior to his role in La Mesa, Vasquez started his career in the San Diego Police Department in 1986. He achieved the rank of Assistant Chief before being sworn in as La Mesa's Chief in 2015.Vasquez also served on the Board of Directors of San Diego Youth Services for more than 10 years and has served on the Board of Directors of San Diego’s Trauma Intervention Program since 2018. LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. (KGTV) -- La Mesa businesses that were damaged or looted during protests that turned violent in late May can receive financial assistance through a special fund.According to the East County Economic Development Council, the La Mesa Disaster Recovery Fund “was created by the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help businesses damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of opportunistic violence and looting following peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrations in La Mesa.”The fund raised ,000 on its first day, and then 0,000 by the second day. The fund has now reached nearly 0,000.Fund organizers said they want to be “fast, fair, and equitable” with the distribution of money to the affected businesses.A flat stipend amount will be distributed to each verified business starting the week of June 29. Three-quarters of the money will be distributed during this Phase 1.The remaining 25 percent will be distributed during Phase 2 (no exact date given), with the intention of closing the fund by the end of July.To be eligible to receive funding, businesses are being asked to upload photos of damage and include verification of the address and ownership through an online form.
