DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The re-extension of a facial covering directive in Palm Beach County, Florida is being called "medical tyranny" by some opponents who took to the streets Saturday afternoon in Delray Beach to display their frustrations.Chris Nelson, the lead organizer of the "Reopen South Florida" rally, points to statistics that show the county's mortality rate has fallen."What we're seeing right now is a dangerous precedent," Nelson said. Additionally, there have been no coronavirus-related deaths since Oct. 7.However, she cautioned that 50% of new cases in the county are people ages 35 to 64. The new facial covering extension is in effect until Nov. 22."The mortality is going down, but we don't know what the residual impact is going to be on people, whether the damage to their lungs is going to be long-term," Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Robert Weinroth said Tuesday.According to the CDC, studies have shown that the use of masks has been proven to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19. DETROIT — The Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank Marathon is the only International Marathon in the United States.Crossing the U.S.-Canadian border is the highlight for many runners, but this year two marathoners crossed another major threshold during the 26.2-mile run.Whitney Black and Steven Phillips started the Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank marathon engaged, and sealed the deal halfway to the finish line.What’s even more mind blowing than a mid-marathon wedding is that no one thought Black would ever be able to walk down the aisle, let alone run. She was seriously injured in an accident more than 10 years ago and then hit by a car while running 18 months ago."Twenty-one surgeries in total, (Black) was told she may never walk again," says McCann Black, Whitney's brother. "I’m just so proud of her, watching her set these goals and then blow through them has helped our family a great deal."Today, 13.1 miles into her very first full marathon, Black married her “sole mate,” Phillips. Phillips, by the way, has had quite a journey of his own, losing around 100 pounds.Friends and family waited near the 13.1 mile marker with balloons, a veil, rings and an officiant until Black and Phillips ran up to the makeshift altar."I promise to trust you even when we deviate from our grocery list," Black vowed."I will choose you every day, not because I have to, but because I want to," Phillips said.Their vows were short and sweet. The ceremony lasted about five or six minutes. (KGTV) - Vendors from the Del Mar Fairgrounds reopened in the parking lot hoping to make enough money through drive-thru orders to stay afloat.Tucked just behind the security office at the Solana Gate, you'll find signs for drive-thru fair food.Roxy's Restaurant, California Corn Dog Company and the Kettle Corn stand are staples at the fairgrounds. The pandemic shut down all of the fair's large scale events, events that would help vendors pay the bills.So owner of the Kettle Corn stand Oliver Feldhausen reopened April 24th in the Green Lot for orders to soften the financial blow."He was so pumped and happy with all the response he got, he invited us to come and join him," Shahram Naimi, owner of Roxy's Restaurant said.Naimi and Owner of California Corn Dog Company Rick Kasinak opened May 8th.Each Friday and Saturday they're open from noon to 6p.m.They're serving dozens compared to the thousands each day at the fair, but they say it's better than nothing."You know it's kinda touch and go but these weekends are definitely helping," Feldhausen said. He said he's thankful for the fair supporting them during this time and the power of social media."Every week we are seeing some of our regulars trickle in and as word continues to spread we're seeing more and more," he said.They're also spreading kindness. Each vendor is offering a discount to military personnel and first responders.Some customers are donating food to first responders and healthcare workers.Feldhausen said they've made deliveries to two fire houses, nurses and ER personnel. He opened Roxy's Restaurant in Encinitas with his brother in 1978. Additions include sea wall improvement and a drainage system that runs parallel to the train tracks.NCTD Executive Director Matt Tucker said "We feel really confident. It'll secure the bluffs to allow continued safe movement on the corridor and it'll give time for the exact project we want to pursue and gain, to allow funding for a permanent solution."Natural disasters like heavy rain are a big concern that would cause tracks and bluffs to crumble down. After countless collapses in the past, beachgoers like Chris Smith, are often worried.Smith told ABC 10News, "I feel comfortable but in the back of my mind you know something could always happen." He also said awareness by leaders is a plus but the tracks should be moved entirely. "With the impact to what the train is providing to the cliff, at some point there's gonna be a negative impact to it," Smith added.Leaders said the new additions will buy them about 30 years, to plan a more permanent solution which could involve moving tracks into a tunnel system.Phase 5 of the project is slated to begin next summer, while plans for phase 6, the final phase, is still in the works. 1419
