SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents in Pacific Beach are tired of the crime in their neighborhood. Some of them say - it's likely a lack of light that emboldens criminals. Wednesday, those neighbors brought the issue up with at a Pacific Beach Planning Group meeting, and offered a unique solution.  "Quality of life crimes are going up."Marcella Teran would know. She's lived here in the area for 30 years."We live by the Pacific Beach library, and there's so much crime over there and drug dealing," she said. "I just didn't feel safe at all."A few houses down, up in a tree above the sidewalk, Teran's neighbor took matters into his own hands."They're LED, solar powered, and it's super bright," she said, pointing out the lights her neighbor put up in front of his home. The best part is, they aren't expensive. Her neighbor purchased the lights online for less than , inspiring Teran to get a few of her own.  944

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are looking for the husband of a City Heights woman found dead by her sister Monday morning.Police say 45-year-old Abdiaziz Kerow is a person of interest and is sought for questioning by detectives, but has yet to be located. Kerow's wife, 36-year-old Muna Salad Kuri, was found dead in her apartment in the 4000 block of Van Dyke Ave., police say.Family members say they last heard from Kuri on Saturday.RELATED: Woman finds sister dead in City Heights homeWhen Kuri's sister came to the apartment to check on her Monday, there was no answer and the landlord unlock the door. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said.
