After Hurricane Laura hammered parts of the Gulf Coast, communities are coming together with people helping people.“The battle cry is out there,” said Curtis Drafton, who is gearing up for a private rescue mission. “The bell is tolling. Let’s go get it!”This United States Army veteran, who spent his life helping others, is now spending his own money to do the same as a civilian.“Last year we spent around ,533,” he said.Drafton is leading the Veteran Emergency Response Unit, a nonprofit providing relief during natural disasters.“It’s not really about the money,” he said. “It’s like, Americans are suffering, Americans are dying and at the end of the day, somebody has got to pick up the slack.”About an hour outside of Baton Rouge in Gator Country, neighbors gathered to help remove a fallen tree off Paige Fontenote’s brand new outdoor carport that was crushed during the storm.“It touches my heart; it makes me want to cry,” she said.Overcome with emotions, Fontone almost broke down from the support from people in the area where she wants to retire.“This is what it’s all about,” she said. “This is why we want to move here.”In Lafayette, Louisiana, homeowners took matters into their own hands, chopping down a fallen tree between a home and an apartment complex.“You cook a gumbo, you hope nothing doesn’t happen to your house and then you get out and help your friends,” said one local man.Helping friends in this time of need as people continue to help other people.“If 2020 hasn’t taught us anything that would be it,” the man said. “Turn the TV off, spend time with your neighbors and do it for them.” 1628

A woman who was 16 when she killed a Nashville man who solicited her for sex must serve at least 51 years in prison before she's eligible for release, according to the Tennessee Supreme Court. On Thursday the court said defendants like Cyntoia Brown, who are convicted of first-degree murder committed after July 1, 1995, and sentenced to life imprisonment, can't become eligible for release from prison before serving more than five decades. The court's five justices were unanimous in their decision against Brown, who was convicted of killing a 43-year-old man in 2004 when he took her to his house for sex. Brown has said she killed him after she feared he would kill her.Thursday's ruling came in response to a lawsuit in which Brown argues her sentence is unconstitutional, citing a 2012 opinion by the US Supreme Court that said mandatory life sentences without parole for juvenile offenders violate the US Constitution. The Tennessee Supreme Court explained in a statement that "under state law, a life sentence is a determinate sentence of 60 years. However, the sixty-year sentence can be reduced by up to 15 percent, or 9 years, by earning various sentence credits."According to the Tennessee code, those credits include recognition for good behavior or participation in educational or vocational training programsA district court previously denied Brown's motion, per court documents, pointing out she hadn't been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole -- just a life sentence. The case is pending judgment by the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which asked the Tennessee Supreme Court to share its opinion. 1649

After a brief flirtation with resurrection, Nickelodeon's "Double Dare" is back -- for real, this time. The game show favorite will return to the network this summer to give "a new generation of kids the chance to compete in the messiest and most physically challenging competition of their lives," Nickelodeon announced Wednesday. The decision to bring the series back comes about a year and a half after Nickelodeon paid tribute to the game show with a 30th Anniversary special."Double Dare" ran on Nickelodeon from 1986-93 and was revived for brief run in 2000.The original show was hosted by Marc Summers and co-hosted by Robin Marella. It is not yet known who will host the new iteration. Though, Nickelodeon said the revived series "will feature appearances from blasts from the past, long-time 'Double Dare' fans and stars from today."On "Double Dare," two teams compete against each other for prizes by answering trivia questions and completing some often-messy physical challenges, all culminating in a run of the show's kid-friendly obstacle course. According to court documents, the members of a militia group who allegedly plotted to kidnap and kill Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hoped to conduct executions of politicians on live TV.The documents state that Adam Fox — the man who state and federal officials have called the alleged "ringleader" of the Wolverine Watchmen militia group — devised two separate plans. "Plan A" included recruiting 200 men, taking over the entire state Capitol building, taking hostages and executing "tyrants" on live television.A secondary plan was to lock the door and set the building on fire.Fourteen men have been charged by the state and federal government in related cases. The documents were filed in Jackson County Court last month. The plot planning went on for about six months. Whitmer was allegedly targeted because she imposed the shutdowns of non-essential businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic; the plot was supposed to be carried out before the November election.Federal and state authorities have said much more evidence will be coming out as the cases against the 14 charged move forward in court.Federal officials have asked a judge in Grand Rapids, who has jurisdiction over six of the men charged, for a protective order to keep the names of confidential informants and undercover FBI agents private. This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1369
