AURORA, Colo. — The dog that was used by an Aurora, Colo. couple for sex acts was deemed not safe for adoption and was euthanized Tuesday.Jenee Shipman, manager at the Aurora Animal Shelter, wrote in a letter to the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office that the dog, which was a male Akita mix named Bubba, was not a safe candidate for adoption or transfer based on its history and behavior in the kennel.“The dog has exhibited unpredictable behavior, and shows signs of aggression towards veterinary services staff, volunteers, community service workers and staff members that the dog is not especially familiar with (staff who clean, feed, provide enrichment and treats daily),” the letter reads.Michael Bryant, the senior public information officer with the city of Aurora, confirmed that the dog had been humanely euthanized Tuesday after the couple’s sentencing.Court documents say that the animal's abuse occurred between July 1, 2016 and March 27, 2017. In March, Janette Solano, 49, and Frederick Manzanares, 51, were charged with animal cruelty and accused of having sex with their dog in a backyard motorhome.Solano, the ex-girlfriend of Manzanares, pleaded guilty to cruelty and animal neglect on July 30, according to court documents. Per her plea agreement, her three subsequent charges to cruelty and neglect of animals were dismissed by the district attorney. Manzanares, 51, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty. According to court documents, he was sentenced on Tuesday to 180 days in jail and 24 months of probation. 1576

As many restaurants navigate reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic, some have had to close their doors for good. Many of the hardest hit are buffet-style restaurants as national and state agencies are trying their best to safely keep buffets operating."The toughest part of restaurants right now is if you’ve got a buffet, how do you provide that safely? And so what we’ve guided folks currently is that you can have a buffet but you have to have somebody serve you," says Rob Mortensen, President and CEO of Hospitality Tennessee. The group is working closely with the National Restaurant Association and government officials to provide guidelines for restaurants and hotels during the coronavirus pandemic."As I worked with [Tenn. Gov. Bill Lee] on guidance for restaurants and attractions, our biggest issues are around buffets and big sporting events where you have tens of thousands of people together, because it’s hard to reduce that contact," says Mortensen.Many people are used to being able to serve yourself at a buffet but experts are now advising buffet-style restaurants to instead have restaurant employees serve customers. Even hotels that normally offer a morning buffet are instead offering their guests breakfast to-go."I would say look at how you’re doing things. If it makes sense to serve people from the buffet I think for the next short bit that’s going to be the most challenging thing we’re going to address," says Mortensen.Recently, national chain Sweet Tomatoes, also known as Souplantation in Southern California, announced it's closing all 97 of its locations permanently due to COVID-19. Bad news: There is a small chance an asteroid will collide with Earth. The good news: Mankind has more than 115 years to prepare for it. According to a Washington Post report, NASA is preparing for possible tactics to deflect the asteroid Bennu, which will approach Earth Sept. 21, 2135. As of today, NASA rates Bennu's chance of striking Earth at one-in-2,700.The asteroid is roughly 1,600 feet in diameter, and would not be an Earth-ending event if it struck. But that doesn't mean it couldn't cause damage, especially if it struck near a populated area. Bennu is likely dozens of times larger than the object that struck near Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013, causing hundreds of injuries, and thousands of broken windows. The event caused nearly million in damage to roughly 7,000 buildings. The 2013 event shows that even small objects are capable of causing massive damage. In 2016, NASA launched OSIRIS-REx, which will land on the asteroid and bring back samples. The information gathered could help NASA decide what steps it would take to deflect the asteroid. According to the Washington Post, NASA is working on a plan called the Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response, or HAMMER. NASA's HAMMER plan could involve using a nine-ton bulk impactor to push Bennu out of Earth's path. Another idea would be straight out of the movie "Armageddon," using a nuclear-type device to move the asteroid. A NASA engineer involved in the study told the Washington Post all of these ideas are theoretical. “We’re doing these design studies to prepare ourselves, so if we do find a threatening object, we’re better prepared to deal with it,” Brent W. Authorities will begin distributing an experimental Ebola vaccine in Mbandaka, a major city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Monday to try to stop the spread of the deadly virus.Healthcare workers in Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur Province and home to 1.2 million people, will be the first to receive the vaccine, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Ja?arevi? said.The confirmation of the first case in Mbandaka last week has raised concerns that the virus could spread faster than expected.
