HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A grandmother in Hillsborough County, Florida, is facing several charges after she caused a crash that killed her 10-month-old granddaughter, according to Florida Highway Patrol. According to an accident report, Helen Mention, 50, was drunk when she crashed into a guardrail on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. Her blood alcohol level was .225, FHP says. That's nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Troopers say Mention was driving with 10-month-old Harlem Mention on her lap. She was turning from Mango Road onto westbound I-4 when she crashed into a guardrail. Harlem was taken to Tampa General with critical injuries. She died a few days later on Oct. 28, according to FHP. Mention was arrested Monday and charged with DUI manslaughter, aggravated manslaughter of a child, careless driving and a violation of Florida's child restraint law. 883

Gregory and Nina Barta were on vacation when they saw surveillance video of three people allegedly stealing from their home in Romulus, Michigan. Two of the suspects are complete strangers, but the third is their own 17-year-old son.The Bartas said that their son has had issues with truancy and incorrigibility but nothing like this. "It was devastating to see our own son carrying our belongings out of our house," said Gregory Barta. "It's very troubling but also very scary because we have daughters. What would have happened if they were home?"The couple immediately notified Romulus Police. Captain Joshua Monte said they are investigating and that the three suspects could face charges of home invasion and receiving and concealing stolen property. "You feel helpless," Nina Barta said. The couple's son had been living at home, but after the alleged burglary Monday afternoon, he didn't return. They tried to reach him through social media because he doesn't have a cell phone."Nothing he took was his. Everything was ours," said Gregory Barta. The items stolen include the couple's computer, jewelry, tools, televisions, and three firearms that were in a safe. Wednesday afternoon, Action News learned that police had taken the couple's son into custody. It's possible he saw his mother's Facebook post because he went to a store in Garden City where police said he told a worker that Romulus Police were looking for him. Garden City detained the teen for Romulus Police.Police said some of the stolen items were recovered, but not the guns.Captain Monte said investigators are still trying to identify and locate the two other suspects seen on surveillance video. "We have no idea who they are," said Gregory Barta.Anyone with information on the other suspects or the stolen firearms is urged to call Romulus Police at 313-941-8400. 1853

Four people will face prosecution over the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, five years after the plane crashed in eastern Ukraine killing 298 people, international investigators said Wednesday. The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said it would issue national and international arrest warrants Wednesday for the four suspects. Three Russians, Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinskiy and Oleg Pulatov, were named, along with Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko.According to investigators, Girkin is a former colonel of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), Dubinskiy was employed by Russia's military intelligence agency GRU and Pulatov was a former soldier of the Russian special forces, Spetsnaz-GRU.Ukraine's Kharchenko had no military background, but is believed to have led a combat unit in Donetsk in July 2014.Investigators said they would not ask for the suspects to be extradited because the Russian and Ukrainian constitution prohibits extraditing nationals. They added that they would ask Russia to cooperate with the investigation, and both countries to question the suspects about the charges.Flight MH17 was shot out of the sky over territory held by pro-Russian separatists as it flew from Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur in July 2014. The 298 who died came from 17 countries.According to Dutch prosecutor Fred Westerbeke, the suspects are not accused of firing the missile, but are "just as punishable as the person who committed the crime," Westerbeke said.He added that they are suspected of obtaining the Buk missile "with the goal to shoot the plane."According to the JIT -- which is made up of five countries: Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine -- MH17 was downed by a Buk.Investigators announced in 2018 that the flight had been brought down by a missile fired from a launcher belonging to Russia's 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade. Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in the incident, suggesting instead that Ukrainian forces shot down the plane.Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said there was "nothing to discuss," in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, ahead of the news conference."You know our attitude to this investigation. Russia had no opportunity to take part in it (the JIT). Though from the very start, from the very first days of this tragedy, Russia showed initiative, was actively trying to become a part of this investigation into this horrific disaster," Peskov added. 2465
