HAMILTON, Ohio -- Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class Thomas Jesse Murphy was killed in action in 1943 during World War II. It took 75 years for his remains to be returned home.Murphy was just 22 when he was killed during the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific theater, according to his obituary. Due to the large number of casualties, Murphy and many others were buried in hasty mass graves and not accounted for.His remains were finally identified last October. Murphy's niece, Chantel Oliver, remembers the phone call."Are these people for real? How do you know this is not fake? How do you know this is really happening? Then when I saw the Navy in my sister's living room, I realized this was happening," she said.A procession carried Murphy's remains from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to nearby Hamilton on Friday. "It's about Uncle Tommy," Oliver said. "Giving him his due."Murphy is being buried in a Hamilton cemetery, next to his family members."We have closure now that we have his remains brought back and laid to rest next to my grandfather," Oliver said.Barbara Holland with the group Honor and Remember knows what it's like to wait. HEALY, Alaska – The book and movie “Into the Wild” profiled Christopher McCandless, a young man who left his family to connect with nature in Alaska in the 1990s.The old bus he lived in before he died has attracted sightseers that have risked their lives to see it in a remote area. Soon, anyone will be able to see it without a dangerous hike.“Maybe not everybody would have done exactly what he did, but the fact that he did that is very attractive in the hearts of a lot of different people,” said Patrick Drunkenmiller, Director of the University of Alaska Museum of the North.Drunkenmiller says the state is far too familiar with McCandless’ story.McCandless hiked his way through the interior to live off the land. That’s when he found the bus, Fairbanks Bus 142, and used it as shelter for 114 days, according to Alaska historian Angela Linn.“That story and the resulting tragedy that he wasn’t able to make it out of there, it’s kind of one of those classic stories that we’re trying to understand on the grand Alaskan scale, of course, because this happens to a lot of people,” said Linn. “Disappearing in the Alaskan wilderness happens to a lot of people.”McCandless died after not being able to cross back through a river. He ate a poisonous plant and died in the bus after leaving a farewell letter. Decades later, people from all over the world have traveled to Alaska to find Bus 142.“So, sure, people thought let’s go check this out, unfortunately the Teklanika River was the same barrier to many of those visitors as Christopher McCandless for trying to leave,” said Drunkenmiller.“Unfortunately, two people died, lots of other people had to be rescued, because they weren’t prepared to either go across one way or come back the other way,” said Linn.With countless rescues and two deaths, the most recent one last year, the state finally decided to remove the bus in June.“A lot of people have a lot of strong feelings about DNR removing the bus from that location. They felt like it acted as a symbol of that place and that story and that feeling, that emotion that he was trying to connect with," sid Linn.“The owners of the bus, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, said enough is enough, this is a real menace to public safety,” said Drunkenmiller.The famous bus is now at an undisclosed location. It’s in the process of making its way to its new home, the University of Alaska’s museum.While McCandless’ story can be considered a controversial, it is a storied part of Alaska’s history.“This is part of the craziness that is Alaska, this wildness of Alaska, that 20 miles off the highway, that this kind of thing can happen,” said Linn. 2673
GREELEY, Colo. – Chris Watts was told Tuesday at an advisement hearing in a Weld County courtroom that he faces nine felony counts, including first-degree murder and unlawful termination of a pregnancy, in connection with the deaths of his wife and two daughters in Frederick last week.Watts, 33, faces three counts of first-degree murder after deliberation, two counts of first-degree murder – victim under 12/position of trust, one count of first-degree unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body.The unlawful termination of a pregnancy charge comes because Shanann Watts was 15 weeks pregnant at the time she was killed. Former Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett explained the statute in an interview with Denver7 Friday.In court Tuesday, Watts answered questions from the judge of whether he understood the charges against him with short responses of, “Yes sir.”Watts and his attorney waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days and asked for a status conference to be held instead. His attorney and prosecutors agreed that an evidentiary and discovery hearing could be held in the case as well.Prosecutors will have 63 days after Watts' arraignment to decide if they will seek the death penalty in the case. If they do not, Watts would face mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted on any of the murder charges.Shanann’s father and brother, Frank Rzucek and Frank Rzucek Jr., both attended the hearing. Court documents show her body was found in a "shallow grave near an oil tank." Her daughter’s bodies were discovered concealed within oil tanks nearby, sources told Denver7. Court documents filed late last week show experts were advised the bodies were in tanks filled with crude oil "for several days." Hawaii may have a hurricane on its horizon next week -- though it's far too early to tell how close it will get.Hurricane Lane, a devastatingly strong Category 4 storm now, is heading west-northwest over the Pacific, and is forecast to weaken and pass south of the Aloha State around Wednesday.But the track is uncertain this early, and there's a chance Lane by Tuesday night could bring winds of at least tropical-storm strength (39 mph and higher) to Hawaii's Big Island, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center says.Early Saturday, the storm was more than 1,200 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph -- the lowest threshold for a Category 4.The storm could strengthen Saturday and Sunday, but it is expected to weaken to a Category 1 (sustained winds of 74-95 mph) by Tuesday or Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center says.Six computer forecast models predict Lane's center will pass south of Hawaii next week, but the outer bands still could bring strong winds to the islands if the center gets close enough.Lane's approach comes more than a week after Hawaii watched Hurricane Hector pass well to the south. 1159

A grandfather.“He was also a chef,” Yolanda Green-Samuel added recalling fond memories of her brother, Eugene Green, who was killed four years ago in a hit-and-run incident while he was on a bicycle. She still recalls a conversation she had with local police in Miami Gardens, Florida, one that is seared into her memory.“[Police said] ‘We have no leads and no answers.’ And at that point I said to him ‘that’s unacceptable.'"”I was engulfed in pain,” Green-Samuel added.But she took that pain and channeled it for good. She’s created an organization to help raise awareness and try to decrease the problem of hit-and-run drivers. She says few people know how much more severe the penalties are when you flee the scene. Prison time for suspects who are caught is becoming more and more common. Samuel-Green wants people to know that more often than not the crash is an accident.It highlights an issue that only seems to be getting worse, according to statistics. In 2016—the latest year for which complete data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration exists—there were more hit-and-run fatalities than there have been in the 40-plus years that NHTSA has been keeping track. There were 2,049 people killed as a result of a hit-and-run 2016. Significant in those numbers: 70% of those deaths were to pedestrians or bicyclists. Jacob Nelson is a researcher with AAA, which put out a study highlighting the new numbers. He says one of the reasons for the uptick in pedestrian and cyclist deaths could be the simple fact that there are more pedestrians and cyclists on city streets.“There’s been a huge push from the public health community to get more people outside walking and biking given all the health benefits to doing that,” Nelson said. But he cautions that cities also need to start looking at putting more barriers between non-motorists and vehicle traffic lanes.The other factor that could be playing a part: distracted driving.“That doesn’t matter whether you are a motorist, pedestrian, or a cyclist. You need to pay attention to what’s around you. A lot of these crashes could be prevented in the first place,” Nelson said.And he joins Green-Samuel in urging any motorist involved in a crash to stay put.“The element of people leaving the scene of a crash is not only illegal, but motorists need to realize that staying on the scene of a crash is the right thing to do,” Nelson said. “It can help prevent people from being killed and it can lessen the severity of the injuries people sustain if we make sure people get medical care in that first hour.”Green-Samuel also hopes that through her organization, Just an Accident: Stop Hit-and-Runs, she hopes more people will become aware of the immense power people hold in their hands when driving a vehicle.“I just don't think people realize the responsibly they take when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle," she said. 2984
