SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoteliers across San Diego are seeing a significant loss of business from mass cancellations as efforts continue to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. The San Diego Convention Center Corp. reports five conferences have either been canceled or postponed, meaning upwards of 43,000 people would not be coming to San Diego and spending money locally. "The hotel industry has seen a significant drop in business, a significant impact on the workforce," said Namara Mercer, who chairs the San Diego Hotel Motel Association. He says he expects it to peak next week at 35 percent before he expects things to calm down. As of now, he has not cut staff hours, but he said things could change if the loss of business continues to persist. "If this worsens over the next couple of weeks, we will create some kind of shared pain program," said Rauch, adding that it would likely involve cutting hours across the board so no employees are laid off. The bowl’s traditional Bowl Week events had already been canceled for this year, including the Holiday Bowl Parade.Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said that in addition to challenges in holding the game safely for fans, the virus had, "created a situation in that we wouldn’t be able to welcome fans, ultimately resulting in no tourism. Couple that with the financial and potential health risks of trying to play the game during this pandemic and it was clear this was the right decision for us.""This has been the most difficult decision our Board has ever had to make since our bowl game started in 1978," said Neville. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four rescued sea lion pups and a northern fur seal were released back into the ocean after rehabilitating at SeaWorld.The fur seal was rescued on Mission Beach on Dec. 30, 2019, and the four sea lion pups came into SeaWorld's care over the past two months. All the animals were malnourished and dehydrated, animal care experts said.During their rehabilitation, the animals doubled in weight and were given a clean bill of health by SeaWorld veterinarians. The animals' care givers also made sure the animals could demonstrate they were able to fend for themselves before they were returned to the sea.RELATED: SeaWorld sees high number of sea lion rescuesSeaWorld released the five animals about five miles west of Scripps Pier near La Jolla.Last month, the park released another four sea lions who were under their care back into the ocean.Since the start of 2020, SeaWorld says it has rescued nearly 20 sea lions and seals.SeaWorld told 10News in January that rescuers have seen an unusually large number — about three times the normal amount — of sea lion rescues this winter."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High school sports in San Diego County and across California will happen during the 2020-21 school year but on a modified schedule that will push the start for fall sports, such as football, to early winter.The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Monday released a schedule that shows the last date for Section and Regional/State Championships. Fall sports' championships, according to the schedule, shows end dates in March and April. The schedule shows spring sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field, with championship end dates in May and June.CIF officials said that “most Section start dates will commence in December 2020 or January 2021.”In a press release posted on its website, the CIF San Diego Section said:The California Interscholastic Federation, San Diego Section (CIF-SDS) is excited to see the foundations of a plan to return high school athletics throughout the state of California for the 2020-2021 school year. Today’s announcement from the state office provides our section with the information necessary to finalize the calendars and schedules for all of our CIF regulated sports, while also acknowledging the importance of the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches by pushing the official start date back to align with the Roadmap to Recovery set by the state of California.Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in a reduced athletic calendar for the year.
