SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) - With their backs to the wall, facing elimination, an unforgiving heat, and trying to stave off fatigue from a rigorous schedule, the Park View Little League all-stars survived to play another game at the West Regional tournament in San Bernardino.Keyed by slugger Jose Mendoza and stellar pitching by Kainoa Baptista, the Green Monsters kept their postseason run alive while ending the Arizona Sunnyside Little League's hopes of advancing.  The squad from Chula Vista defeated Sunnyside 9-5 in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon.PVLL, which suffered its first loss of the postseason on Monday, took an early 3-0 lead on a first-inning three-run blast to right center by Mendoza.The Southern California champs broke the game open in the third inning.  Down two outs with runners on first and second, Aiden Skinner punched a deep single to right field scoring Jordan Bleisch.The long inning and blistering 108-degree heat seemed to wear down Arizona starting pitcher Cristobal Lorta.  Lorta started struggling with his form allowing Park View to extend their lead 7-0 on two wild pitches with runners on third and an RBI single to Conner Alonzo.Sunnyside's decision to keep Lorta on the mound in the fourth inning backfired when the leadoff batter, Ivan Rodriguez Jr., ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double. Lorta then hit Mendoza and Makai Corpuz with a pitch leading to two more runs later in the inning.Arizona's last-gasp effort in their final turn at-bat shrunk Park View's lead 9-5 on a two-run homer by Jovanni Toledo but PVLL closer Atticus Gates to force a pop fly to left field for the final out.The Green Monsters won't get much time to enjoy their victory.  After playing three consecutive days in triple-digit heat, PVLL will return Wednesday night at 7 p.m. to face either Tri-City Little League of Northern California or Dixie Little League of St. George, Utah, in another elimination matchup.Park View may be favoring a match up against Tri-City.  The Green Monsters defeated the Northern California champs in a 16-8 rout that saw a grand slam and a pair of back-to-back homers from Rodriguez and Mendoza.  The winner of the West Regional advances to Williamsport, Pa., for the Little League World Series, which runs Aug. 16-26.10News' Jermaine Ong contributed to this report.-------------------------------------------NOTES  2477

SAN DIEGO — Business owners across San Diego County are readying to push back against a potential new round of Coronavirus restrictions.The county could reach the state’s most restrictive purple tier on Tuesday, meaning restaurants, gyms, nail salons and estheticians would all have to stop indoor service.Business owners are now calling this a fight for survival.“We’ve been in the red since March, so the bleeding’s got to stop somewhere,” said Ben Clevenger, who owns Lakeside’s Eastbound Bar and Grill.Clevenger has reduced his staff from 45 to about 15, and he’s now taking shifts running food and cooking in the kitchen. It’s the only way the restaurant can survive amid social distancing restrictions inside, and 100 degree weather outside.“Never do I mind getting my hands dirty, but I would much rather have an employee doing it because it’s money in their pocket,” Clevenger said.The county is on track to move into the state’s most restrictive tier of coronavirus restrictions on Tuesday - largely because of an increase in cases at San Diego State University.On Monday, the county Board of Supervisors will meet behind closed doors to decide whether to take action against the state. As it stands, more than 100 thousand San Diegans remain unemployed, as businesses are forced to close or limit their services. The governor's office ordered restaurants to go to takeout only, salons to close and gyms to transition outside. Meanwhile, ICU capacity in Southern California is at 0 percent.The new proposal looks similar to the original, called the CARES Act, which passed in late March. There is, however, a key difference - the direct payments to Americans are cut in half. Unemployed San Diegans will get an additional 0 on their weekly payments starting the week of Dec. 26, lasting through March 14. The prior stimulus bill added 0 per check. Plus, San Diegans who earned up to ,000 in 2019 will get 0 in direct stimulus payments, down from the ,200 in the first bill. "I think it's got to be more," said Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego. "This is a really serious situation, businesses are going out of business, and they need a lot more help than what's being provided in this package."But others say they are ready for any help. David Heine, owner of Beumont's and Brockton Villa, recently laid off 42 workers and created a gofundme page to help them. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A distraught man driving a van stolen in Sorrento Valley led San Diego police and the California Highway Patrol on a lengthy chase Thursday that ended in Riverside County, authorities said.San Diego Police Department Officer Scott Lockwood said the white van was stolen from the 9400 block of Scranton Road about 10:45 a.m.SDPD officers pursued the stolen vehicle through Mira Mesa, and the CHP took over the chase when the driver got onto northbound Interstate 15. The suspect, who's in his 50s, was apprehended just south of Weirick Road in Corona at 11:54 a.m., according to the CHP."The suspect was suicidal and inflicted harm to himself, possibly with a sharp-edged knife or razor," CHP Officer Javier Muniz said.Muniz said the unidentified suspect was transported by ambulance to Inland Valley Hospital for treatment. 849

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Zoo has two new arrivals: a pair of endangered African penguin chicks.The zoo announced Wednesday that the fluffy chicks, named Doug and Barbara, hatched two months ago.The eggs came from two breeding couples. The zoo says it's the first time eggs laid by its adult penguins have hatched there.Staff has been working with the chicks to get them used to humans before they are introduced into the penguin colony in the next few weeks.African penguins are an endangered species. Their numbers have dropped by more than 60% in the past three decades and only 23,000 breeding pairs are known to exist.The decline is blamed on several factors, including disease, habitat destruction and lack of food from overfishing, climate change and pollution. 781
