SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was killed Saturday when an SUV overturned and crashed into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol said.The accident happened about 9 a.m. when a white Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed according to one witness, overturned and hit a tree on the right shoulder of the Sea World Drive on-ramp, according to CHP Officer Salvador Castro.Units from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were also on the scene, near the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center.The CHP had no immediate information on the identity of the victim. Castro said nobody else was in the SUV at the time of the crash.Traffic on Sea World Drive and northbound I-5 was reported to be slowing. The CHP will investigate the cause of the accident. 837

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a 3-1 vote, the San Diego City Council Environment Committee approved a resolution declaring a climate emergency in the city of San Diego Thursday.The resolution has no council action attached, but voting for it is the first step toward getting more meaningful ordinances in front of the full city council. San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento have all declared climate emergencies. Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, who chairs the environment committee, said the resolution was a necessary process."By passing this resolution today, we'll be joining more than 1,300 other cities in 25 countries in declaring a climate emergency," she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman driving on a suspended license who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in state prison. Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30, -- on probation for a prior DUI -- had a .29% blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9- month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old daughter broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones and underwent five surgeries to treat his injuries. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver crashed into a house in the Miramar Ranch North area of San Diego Saturday morning and was hospitalized with life threatening injuries.The man was driving his 2014 Hyundai eastbound in the 11700 block of Cypress Canyon Road when he made a left turn onto the 11500 block of Sun Ray Court about 12:30 a.m., according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."As (the driver) was turning, he made an unsafe movement to his left, lost control and crashed into a house," Heims said.The driver was taken to a hospital with major head and face injuries, considered to be life threatening, Heims said.DUI was suspected and the crash was being investigated by SDPD Traffic Division.The name of the driver was not disclosed.No other injuries were reported. 817

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a Mira Mesa home Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage, injuring a firefighter and displacing five residents.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10100 block of Embassy Way, just west of Camino Ruiz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.All the occupants of the house were able to safely get outside prior to the arrival of emergency crews, according to SDFRD public affairs.Watch firefighters battle the fire below:Firefighters arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames.
