SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many Black female voters in San Diego voters are celebrating Joe Biden’s decision to choose California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.“This is a historic moment. I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? Dr. Kyra Greene, the executive director at the Center on Policy Initiatives, said Harris would bring new life to this race while appealing to a wide range of voters.“She’s young enough to attract young folks but old enough to show experience and to be taken seriously,” said Greene. “I think it will help with women who were disappointed not to see other women advance further in this race, and I also think it will help with Black voters.”“I think Senator Harris speaks to people who are interested in change because she herself has gone through an evolution on these issues,” she said.Greene said the decision not only makes history but will reenergize some of the most politically engaged San Diegans. 1678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local groups including the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, are pushing for the City of San Diego to draft up and pass an ordinance that excludes certain zoning policies. "We're not asking to spend billions of dollars and build something, we're saying change the zoning. They have the prerogative, it's under their jurisdiction, we're reminding them there are issues at stake and those issues are communities to this day that are segregated," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of LISC.Flores says the same areas that were identified back in 1930 by San Diego banks as low-income areas are still falling under that category today. Additionally, areas outside of those remain zoned for single-family homes, keeping the lower income families from moving in. "So, what we’re effectively saying is, if you can't buy a single-family home in Kensington, then you can't live in Kensington. But, that’s not the truth; the truth is Kensington is zoned one thing, single family, and we need to expand that zoning." A representative at the rally from Chicano Federation says, "We are tired of the continuation of policies masked as zoning when in reality they are policies of segregation." Meantime, Borre Winkle, CEO and president of the Building Industry Association of San Diego told 10News, "The American dream is not to live in an apartment, the American dream is still to live in a single-family dwelling unit no matter how big it is".Winkle says getting rid of single family zoning isn't the solution. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar broke ground Friday on its first hangar to house the F-35, the most advanced fighter jet in the world.While the plane may be controversial, the hope is to replace aging aircraft. The new project will also include a flightline expansion."We're building new F-35 joint strike fighters and we're going to send them right here to Miramar,” President Trump said in his visit to the base Tuesday.Congressman Scott Peters and other military leaders were in attendance at the groundbreaking, thrilled about finally moving these projects forward."We're really taking care of the nation's defense," said Rep. Peters, representing the 52nd District. "One of the things when I went to the Armed Services Committee was to make sure that this facility was high on the list of priorities," he said. Harper Construction won the bid and will employ about 2000 workers.  The 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s."We need to upgrade the infrastructure, the connections, the systems inside the hangers," said Col. Jason Woodworth, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar.While critics have pointed to design flaws and skyrocketing costs on the new planes, the military says aging aircraft like the F/A-18 hornets are becoming tougher to maintain."Older airplanes are like that telephone on your wall you had when you were a kid with the rotary dial on it," Woodworth said. Ana was snatched off the streets of London in broad daylight.According to statistics, that's rare. If they don't meet their quota, they don't eat. Girls are moved by the pimps from one short-term rental to another to both evade being caught by law enforcement and to keep the girls advertised as new in town.It's happening in San Diego...The global issue of pop-up brothels is alive and well in San Diego. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger, of the San Diego Sex Trafficking Task Force, confirms it's happening locally. Last year alone in San Diego, human trafficking was an 0-million industry."We have it going on in massage parlors, hotels ... and we also have it going on in short-term vacation rentals, apartments, condos, and homes," Matzger said.The task force has busted a pop-up brothel operating out of an upscale condo in Mission Valley. Two people were convicted of pimping and pandering and an adult was rescued. She had been trafficked to San Diego from the east coast through Los Angeles. They had two people inside running the computers and security portion of it," the member said. We are not identifying the task force member. "They had a call center, they would give the johns a code to enter the building."He says it all starts on the internet where the girls are advertised for sex. Matzger says the girls are expected to bring in the bucks."Ten times a day. Ten times a night. They work all night long," Matzger says.And they're isolated and totally under the fist of her traffickers"She's dependent on them for where she sleeps, what she eats, when she eats, and when she sleeps. They were convicted and sentenced to three years.Her testimony helped secure the passing of the first Human Trafficking and Exploitation Act in the U.K in over a hundred years. Experts say we have a long way to go and statistics back that up. Worldwide, almost five million women and girls endured forced sexual exploitation last year.In San Diego, the Sex Trafficking Task Force — a combination of positions from members of the DOJ, the San Diego District Attorney's Office, and San Diego Police Department — has created an aggressive front taking on sex trafficking in a county that attracts it because of tourism.Matzger says, "large gatherings such as Comic-Con, sporting events, and other venues that attract tourists ... also attract those looking to buy sex." 4736
