ORLANDO, Fla. — A portion of the Florida Turnpike closed on Tuesday afternoon as semi-trucks line underneath the overpass in an effort to save a suicidal man. The Florida Highway Patrol shared an image at 1:40 p.m. local time on Tuesday of at least seven semi-trucks lined up underneath the overpass as a man hung over the side of a fence. The image also shows a group of officers talking to the man. According to FHP, the Florida Turnpike was closed in both directions near Kirkman Road in Orlando. Nurse Theresa Klenk sees plenty of cases of heatstroke at the New Jersey hospital where she works.But when her husband, a UPS driver, was admitted with symptoms incurred during a shift driving a brown delivery truck with no air conditioning, she decided to do something.Klenk created a petition on change.org in July urging UPS to provide air conditioning in its trucks. It's been signed more than 210,000 times.But UPS is not planning to equip its vehicles.Dan McMackin, a UPS spokesperson, told CNNMoney that air conditioning wouldn't work on its trucks."Our delivery vehicles make frequent stops and the entry doors and rear doors are frequently opened and closed throughout the day, making air conditioning ineffective," he said.McMackin said the company does have a program for drivers feeling adverse effects from heat called Cool Solutions, which focuses on hydration and extra rest before extreme heat conditions."We provide water and ice in all facilities for employees and we have fans in many of our vehicles. We monitor local area temperatures and inform our drivers every morning of the forecast temperatures," he said.The Cool Solutions program doesn't solve any problems, Klenk said.At her husband's facility, the program merely consists of handing out a case of water every morning to the branch's 68 drivers, she said.Heatstroke sets in when the body gets so hot that it stops sweating. At 10 degrees above normal body temperature -- about 107 degrees -- it begins to get too hot for organs to function.The union hasn't been much help with the air conditioning issue, Klenk said.UPS's roughly 260,000 employees belong to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union. In June, the union reached a new tentative contract with UPS for the main small-package division, ensuring wage rises and creating a part-time weekend force.Klenk, whose husband is with Teamsters, said that the air conditioning issue is not a part of the contract.Andrea Medinaverbeck, a petition signer, commented: "As a former Teamster shop steward for UPS out of Sunnyvale, CA, we have negotiated AC in package cars, but it has always gone by the wayside when other issues arise that unfortunately, the union thinks are more important. In essence, it's been used as a bargaining chip instead of an important issue."Teamsters declined to comment.UPS isn't the only delivery company facing a call for air conditioning. A similar change.org petition aims at FedEx, and has garnered 161,000 of 200,000 desired signatures. (KGTV) - Whale watchers enjoyed a rare encounter off the Southern California coast Monday: four orcas teaming up to prey on dolphins. “It’s very, very rare,” said Oceanside Whale Watching manager Carla Mitroff. The company had a boat full of whale watchers off San Clemente when the orcas appeared. Boat Captain Shane and staff biologist Lauren Turley captured the moment. “They were thrilled beyond thrilled,” Mitroff said of the passengers. “It’s the holy grail of whale watching.” The Eastern Tropical Pacific orcas pass through Southern California after a stop in Mexico, Mitroff said. The whale watching team hasn’t seen orcas in more than a year. Monday, the orca pod preyed on two baby dolphins as the mother tried to fight the killer whales. It's not unusual for orcas to eat larger mammals.“The diet of orcas depends to some extent on what is available where they live,” according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. One ecotype of orcas in the Pacific Northwest eats fish, while other ecotypes eat marine mammals and squid. Killer whales are “considered a top predator, eating near the top of the food chain.” 1171

(KGTV) — San Diego County's third-largest city has three-and-half miles of coastline and is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego, making it a natural stop since its earliest days in the 1880s. "Originally, it was on a train depot. It was called Ocean Side; two words," said John Daley, a third generation resident, as he perused photographs at the Oceanside Historical Society. The two-room office near City Hall has become a repository for some 30,000 images and Daley seems to have an anecdote for every one."They had 11 saloons at one time in the 1880s, so apparently they liked saloons," said Daley. "It was a mostly male community at that time and that would be the place to go and eat and socialize. And there wasn't a lot of drinking in the saloons as there is today," Daley said.In fact, the story of Oceanside has a very practical side. Consider the name: Oceanside. Daley says you can thank farmers bound to the nearby fertile inland valley who would occasionally take a break. "They would go to the 'Ocean Side' to go have some fun. And that really became Oceanside," Daley said.Rail lines came in 1881, prompting a homestead in '83, and incorporation in 1888. Founded by land speculator Andrew Jackson Myers, Oceanside was born with 1,100 residents. Numbers destined to rise into the next century as the coastal community continued to become more connected by rail and road. "As soon as they had cars come here we were kind of the easy stopping point between Los Angeles and San Diego or Mexico. We became very prominent for that," said Daley.Oceanside beaches became go-to destinations via the new Highway 101 and business grew. Then came World War II and Camp Pendleton. Oceanside's now 5,000 residents would be outnumbered by a military migration. "As the story goes, they brought in about 7,000 people to build the base because it was such a large base, obviously," said Daley. "Oceanside had to come to grips with feeding, housing and recreating those people. So, people lived everywhere. They lived in sheds and garages."And Daley says an even greater boom would follow in the 1960s and 70s as the region became more well known. Oceanside grew at a rate of 2,000 homes a year while catering to millions of travelers. "Even the restaurant I eventually owned at one time — the 101 Cafe — was called the 101 Cafe and Trailer Park because they allowed trailers in the back of their lot," Daley added.Travelers still stop and some stay. But Daley believes the city is fairly built out at this point. He sees slow growth ahead but a bright future. "We have a beautiful city. I had a restaurant and the tourists always thought they dropped off in paradise when they came here," Daley said. 3019
