SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hate crime charges were filed Monday against the Little Italy man accused of attacking three Muslim women wearing hijabs. Kyle Allen, 50, pleaded not guilty to battery in a San Diego courtroom following the Oct. 6 incident. The women were walking on Columbia Street when Allen approached them from the other direction. Witnesses said Allen lunged his shoulder into them, tried to remove one woman's hijab, then hit one of the women. Passersby trailed Allen back to his high-rise apartment in Little Italy and called police. San Diego Police said Allen answered his front door while holding a handgun with a silencer. A total of 10 guns were found in Allen's home and seized, investigators said. Allen was arrested without incident.Protection orders are in place for the three women, keeping Allen from contacting them or coming within 100 yards.Allen will return to court Dec. 19 for a preliminary hearing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Extreme wind and heat is causing a school district along the San Diego coast to close early Friday. The Coronado Unified School District announced Thursday that the district will be on a minimum day Friday as heat reaches into the 90s. A minimum day means that all schools will begin at their regular times, but end the day at 12:30 p.m. Friday will mark the second day the district will let out early as heat scorches the region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hospital beds are filling up quickly with available capacity at zero in Southern California.ICE Nurse Peter Sidhu is overwhelmed. The Los Angeles County RN says their hospitals are on the brink of their limits.“We’re having an influx of patients like I’ve never seen before,” said Sidhu. “We’re running out of space. We’re converting any and every room into a patient room.”He feels more protected after getting the vaccine Thursday but says being short-staffed is a whole other threat. Sidhu also serves as treasurer for the UNAC/UHCP nurses union. He says hospitals have been facing systemic nursing shortages since the early 2000s.“You’ll be lucky to even get a restroom break. You’re on your feet, you’re running, patients are being intubated,” said Sidhu. “We don’t have enough staff. We didn’t have enough staff to take care of our patients before we had COVID.”California groups counties into five regions as part of the new stay-at-home order.
