WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and U.S. President George W. Bush met at the White House on Tuesday, agreeing to push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.     During the meeting, Yang hailed the great development that two countries have achieved in the past seven years in enhancing China-U.S. relations, which he said also contributed to the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.     He noted that Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bush have set the direction for the future development of bilateral relations during their meeting held at the sidelines of the Hokkaido G8 summit in Japan earlier this month.     China is willing to work with the United States to follow the direction and push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries, Yang added.     For his part, Bush told the visiting Chinese top diplomat that he is glad to see China-U.S. relations developing on a favorable momentum that the United States is committing to maintaining, and he also appreciates a good working relationship built with Chinese President Hu Jintao.     On the coming Olympic games in Beijing, Yang expressed his welcome to Bush, who is set to attend the opening ceremony, and wished American athletes excellent performance in the competitions.     Bush said, in return, that he looks forward to visiting China to attend the Olympic games' opening ceremony.     On the issues of human rights and religion, Yang told the U.S. president that China would like to continue to exchange its views with the United States on basis of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's domestic affairs, as a way to promote mutual understanding.     He also noted at the meeting that the WTO's Doha Round trade negotiations are at a critical moment, and its success would help promote world economy growth, which is in the common interest of China, the United States and the international community.     China hopes that all sides can work together to push forward with the negotiations and achieve a comprehensive and balanced result, he added.     Yang also met with Stephen Hadley, assistant to the president for national security affairs.

PYONGYANG, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The torch relay in Pyongyang will enhance friendship between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China, the DPRK's Olympic chief said Monday.     The event will promote the cooperation and exchanges in sports between the two countries, and will show their traditional friendship to the world, said Park Hak Seon, chairman of the National Olympic Committee of the DPRK.     The official made the remarks at a reception held by the Chinese Embassy to welcome the Beijing Olympic Flame to Pyongyang.     The reception was attended by senior DPRK officials, including Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, and Park Kwan O, chairman of the People's Committee of Pyongyang, foreign diplomats in Pyongyang and famous DPRK athletes.     Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, expressed thanks to various departments of the DPRK for their hard work in preparing for the torch relay in Pyongyang.     He said he sincerely appreciates the strong support from the people of the DPRK to the Chinese people.     The Olympic torch which will be used to carry the sacred flame in Pyongyang was displayed at the reception.     The torch relay will be held on April 28 in Pyongyang, the 18thleg of its global trip. The preparations are going smoothly.     "The committee will try its best to ensure the torch relay in Pyongyang is the smoothest and safest one," Park Hak Seon said.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Thursday the country is fully confident and capable of overcoming the current economic difficulties, vowing to work closely with other countries to safeguard stability of the global financial market.     Wang, in his meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, said China has already taken relevant measures to face up to the turbulences of the international financial market.     As the largest developing country and a rising market, China's priority is to well handle its own problems, he said.     He believes China has great potential in domestic market and economic growth, adding the country would continue to take measures to maintain the stable and relatively fast economic development.     "The Chinese government is to strengthen coordination with other countries to face up to the global crisis and promote the stability of the global economic and financial market," Wang told Schroeder.     He appreciated the former German Chancellor's contribution to cementing bilateral ties. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- As a 6.1-magnitude aftershock hit southwest China's Sichuan Province, the country's quake relief headquarters held its 24th meeting on reconstruction here on Tuesday, reiterating its dual focuses: livelihoods and the environment.     At the meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, the headquarters urged giving priority to the basic needs of the survivors of the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province. It also promised to improve the local environment step by step, ensuring "fast and sound" reconstruction. On Friday afternoon, an aftershock of the same magnitude hit Pingwu and Beichuan counties in Sichuan, injuring 231 people.

BEIJING, May 11 -- China's monetary authorities are struggling to address conflicting policy goals, but inflation will remain the top policy concern, the country's central bank governor said on Saturday.     While the United States and other countries are more focused on fending off a recession, China's monetary policy must target inflation over growth and employment, Zhou Xiaochuan, the People's Bank of China governor, told a forum in Lujiazui, Shanghai's financial center.     "There is no cure-all medicine, and we have to make the final decisions -- everyone hopes there would be a cure-all solution, but there is not," said Zhou.     China's consumer price inflation would likely to rise to 8.5 percent in April from 8.3 percent in March, two sources familiar with the data said late on Thursday. The data, which is subject to last-minute revisions, will be officially released on Monday.
