Hazards created by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano have spawned a lot of questions from the public. How long will this last? Is it safe to be on Big Island right now? Can I roast marshmallows? The US Geological Survey has been answering those questions on social media. Here's a look at some of them. The questions have been edited for clarity and brevity.Q: Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents?USGS: Erm...we're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!) If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 [sulfur dioxide] or H2S [hydrogen sulfide], they would taste BAD. And if you add sulfuric acid (in vog, for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction.Q: Is it safe to be in Hawaii right now?USGS: The eruption at Kilauea right now is impacting a small portion of the Big Island. Lava flows are active on the eastern tip of the island, in lower Puna, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed due to the small explosions occurring at Kilauea's summit. But the Island of Hawaii is made up of 5 volcanoes, and only Kilauea is erupting.Even if there were to be a change in activity at Kilauea, it would not impact Hilo or Kailua-Kona (the largest towns on the island), which are located on different volcanoes. The biggest impacts might be vog, but that has been a persistent issue on the island for decades. You can actually get real-time vog information at sites around the island from the Hawaii Department of Health at http://www.hiso2index.info/. 1493

GRANDVIEW, Mo. — It's something many women dream about for years: the dress she'll walk down the aisle in to say "I do."One Kansas City-area bride about to be married is giving hers away to another bride going through a difficult time.Grandview resident Taylor Cooper will marry her fiance, Nick Amor, on Oct. 10. Cooper originally planned to have two wedding dresses, one to wear during her ceremony and the other during her reception. After downsizing her wedding due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she didn't think the wardrobe change would be appropriate and wanted the extra dress to go to a bride who could use some help.Cooper said she recently landed her dream job and feels blessed she has not faced many difficulties because of the pandemic."I just wanted to think of a way to give back to somebody that had been impacted," Cooper said. "I never really thought in my life that I would be in a position that I could gift something like this."She posted in a bridal Facebook group saying she was looking for a bride in need of a dress, and she was quickly connected with a bride in Georgia."She's just such a sweetheart, she literally has texted me every single day since I told her I was going to give it to her, and she's like 'I can't thank you enough,'" Cooper said.Cooper packed up the dress Wednesday to ship it to its new owner."I feel like it's going where it belongs," Cooper said.Cooper's October wedding is one of many happening this fall.Megan Julian, the founder of Julian Events in Kansas City, said she's seeing fewer couples canceling or postponing weddings and moving to smaller weddings instead."What we're finding is couples are surprised by what they can do with their original plans on a smaller scale," Julian said.Julian said many couples are also incorporating virtual aspects to their weddings so they can keep their original guest list.As Cooper prepares to send off her dress, she hopes to inspire others to lend a helping hand if they can."It doesn't really matter how big or small, I just think any nice gesture we can do for each other these days is just so important," Cooper said. This story originally reported by Emma James on kshb.com. 2180

Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to authorities Friday morning and was arrested and arraigned on charges of first- and third-degree rape and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The charges stem from incidents with two separate women in 2013 and 2004, the district attorney said in a statement, and were the result of a joint investigation between police and the Manhattan District Attorney's office.Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman told reporters outside the courthouse that his client plans to plead not guilty to all of the charges. As part of the agreement between Brafman and the DA's office, Weinstein's bond was set at million. He'll be required to wear a GPS monitoring system and is only allowed to travel within New York state or Connecticut. 841

Hospitals are fast approaching capacity a number of states, and the Miami area again ordered restaurants closed as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases and hospitalizations began to climb. The dour news comes as the U.S. emerged from a Fourth of July weekend of picnics, pool parties and beach outings that health officials fear could fuel the rapidly worsening outbreak. The see-saw effect of eased restrictions and then increases in cases is seeing a number of states reverse course and start to clamp down.To dampen the spread, Miami-Dade County closed all beaches over the July Fourth holiday. The beaches are expected to reopen on Tuesday. Over the course of the pandemic, Miami-Dade County has had more than 1,000 deaths and 48,000 COVID-19 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University data. 811
