SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- During this COVID-19 pandemic, many unsung heroes have stepped up to offer assistance in this critical time of need. And that includes a local pilot, who helping those workers, that help him to get off the ground. Anthony Oshinuga became interested in becoming a pilot when he was 5-years old, and now he's a veteran of the air. Anthony's need for speed and adrenaline led him to racing and performing aerobatics. But he calls his latest piloting adventure, his most rewarding. Flying his own biplane, he traveled across in the country for a campaign he calls, "Reach for the sky...we've got the ground"."Essentially, what that means, is for the support crew that is on the ground at each airport we visited. We delivered a COVID-19 relief package that had face masks, hand sanitizer, and then we gave them a mug to say thank you. We appreciate what you are doing."It was quite a trip for the Valley Center resident, as his flight included 44 stops in 22 locations."My sponsor, Epic Fuel,s, put together this campaign that covered six thousand nautical miles, in my biplane, traveling about 160 miles per hour, " says Anthony. His trip was about giving thanks to airport employees."We have people at the airport, like the guys who fuel the trucks, and those workers who greet people coming off private jets. There are interactions and contact with these people all the time, and we don't think about that."And along his journey, he was able to visit with young kids, and maybe inspire them to become pilots one day. "There were a few stops along the way where people got word of me stopping in. A bunch of kids came out that were S.T.E.M motivated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For 250,000 low-income children in San Diego County, a healthy breakfast and lunch are provided by their schools. In most cases, that stops during the summer, and now more than ever, that's a problem."For all too many San Diego children, summertime brings about hunger," says Vince Hall. Hall is the CEO of Feeding San Diego, and this is where his organization steps in partnering with the state's Pandemic EBT program. This summer, each eligible child receives a one-time payment of 5 for groceries from the State of California. And for a school like Lexington Elementary in El Cajon, this program is a necessity. "98% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged," says Lesley Ezop. Ezop is the interim principal at Lexington Elementary. It's one of 11 food distribution points that Feeding San Diego partners with to offer children much needed nutrition throughout the summer."Just so that kids can have the basics so that they can learn and can function," adds Ezop. "When kids have what they need, they're going to succeed, right?" But the program doesn't stop there. The children aren't the only ones facing hunger. Feeding San Diego knows if the student needs food assistance, then the entire family needs it. So the organization partners with local schools to provide meals for the whole family. "If we provide food to youth and not to the adults, that food is just going to be divided, and the effect of our initiative is going to be diminished," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health officials have confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 at an assisted living center in the College Area.On Wednesday, 10News tried to get answers from Stellar Care Center, located just south of the College Area. On Tuesday night, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten revealed that they were looking into a patient at the home who may have tested positive. “Our staff [is] investigating this situation and once it's determined if there's individuals or patients with influenza-like illnesses, the staff there will collect specimen and send them to our lab for testing,” she stated.Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes continues to grow. In Kirkland, Wash., an outbreak of the virus at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Louisiana, seven deaths have been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. 10News reached out to Stellar Care Center and San Diego County for additional information. A spokesperson for San Diego County writes, "I can confirm that there is a positive case of COVID-19 at Stellar Care Assisted Living. Skilled nursing facilities throughout the County have amplified their protocols to address the COVID-19 pandemic using strategies similar to those recommended by the County of San Diego in responding to an influenza outbreak. These protocols include limiting the amount of people in congregant settings (including meals, activities and visitors) while amplifying cleaning and sanitation measures and providing additional training for staff."The State Department of Social Services writes, “In order to protect confidentiality, we are not able confirm or provide details regarding specific individuals or locations.” 1835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For breast cancer survivor Cindy Swan, group therapy sessions have been an integral part of her fight."At first, I thought I don't need that. That's not for me. I'm a 27-year veteran Navy wife. I can handle anything," she says."But people (in the group) really know what you're going through. They understand it. And seeking help does not make you weak."Cindy has been a regular at Sharp Grossmont group sessions since 2018.But the coronavirus pandemic forced the hospital to cancel all in-person sessions this past March."It was a little bit scary," Swan says. "Because now you have no lifeline that you have been holding on to, to learn your way."Social workers at Sharp scrambled during the first few weeks, trying to find a way to make sure cancer survivors, who are a high-risk group for COVID-19, could still meet and get the emotional support they need.They started to hold virtual group meetings, working through the kinks and quirks of sessions online."Coming to the group was important; maintaining those connections was important; normalizing what was going on for everybody was really, really important," says Sharp Grossmont Oncology Social Worker Linda Hutkin-Slade."But it feels different," she says. "You can't read the room like you do when you're in person. And you don't get the same (non-verbal) cues that you're getting when you're only seeing somebody from the shoulders up."The online sessions were a near-instant success. Within a few weeks, the groups, which are open to anyone, had grown. Cancer patients from all over the world started to join. And people who used to miss meetings because they were feeling ill or couldn't make the drive became more regular participants."It's never going to be the same as the in-person," says Hutkin-Slade. "But it is at least something. And it's a connection. And it helps normalize what people are going through."For Swan, it's been just as helpful as the in-person sessions."We still get to talk to each other," she says.
