OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Oceanside could be getting a new active sports complex, complete with a man-made wave pool, perfect for surfing competitions, according to Mayor Peter Weiss. The idea is in it's beginning stages, no formal paperwork has been submitted to the city clerk. 10News spoke with her Wednesday and she said the developer, Zephyer Partners, has been talking with council members.Neighbors have already been hearing construction equipment hacking away at the remains of the drive-in that operated before the swap meet took over."When I was driving by and I saw you standing here I thought I need to find out because she probably knows more than I do," Neighbor Liz Lewellen said. She said the neighborhood has been wondering what could happen to the lot. Mayor Weiss told 10News the developer gave him this pitch, "n active sports complex, there would be a BMX track, a climbing wall, things like that, it would also have a hotel and then sports oriented retail." He also described a wave pool that mimics the Kelly Slater Surf Ranch in Fresno. The facility is state-of-the-art and perfect for competitions. The idea sparking interest in the community. Lewellen was shocked and excited when she heard."I love the idea that it's commercial coming in because this area desperately needs more restaurants more things," Lewellen said. "So that's really exciting, I know that we have the skate park up the street and that's been a god send for the kids and the active people in the neighborhood."Thursday Zephyr Partners will host a community workshop at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School from 6-8 p.m."It's something unique, I think I'd like to actually see the plans what they're proposing," Weiss said. When asked if Lewellen would try out the wave pool, "I've always wanted to learn how to surf," she said laughing, "so maybe, we'll see, if it's the perfect wave, maybe someone can train me how to perfectly get up on the board."Lewellen had one concern though, wondering how traffic would affect her drive to and from home.Zephyr Partners did not respond to 10News's request for comment. On their website is this FAQ:PROPERTY DESCRIPTIONQ: What is being done on the site today?A: The swap meet is being demolished and the site is being graded pursuant to the approved Pavilion Project.Q: What is the approved Pavilion Project?A: The Pavilion Project was approved in 2008 for approximately 950,000 square feet of commercial uses such as various retail shops and restaurants.Q: How long will the grading activities last?A: The grading will take about 12 months to complete.Q: Are you going to build the Pavilion Project?A: It is possible that we move forward with the Pavilion Project, however we are considering alternatives that would improve the development.Q: How can I learn more about the project and any potential revisions?A: Please email us at info@zephyrpartners.com to be added to our distribution list. 2937

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A 32-foot sailboat capsized and ran aground on the Oceanside shoreline Saturday morning, authorities said. The boat's skipper and only occupant was treated at a hospital but only sustained minor injuries from the accident, which police responded to at around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Oceanside Police Officer Nick Nunez said. The skipper had left Santa Catalina Island for Dana Point in Orange County late Friday, but his navigation equipment went out sometime during the journey and he decided to head for Oceanside, which he believed he could get to without instruments, Nunez said. The boat made it to Oceanside but the skipper missed the Oceanside Harbor entrance, got caught in a swell and ended up running into the beach near the 1200 block of North Pacific Street.Police were still working to get the boat off the beach around 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Nunez said. The capsized vessel could be seen on a surf report live-stream of Oceanside Harbor on surfline.com. A GoFundMe has been started. 1020

Now that the election is over and the transition has begun, one question is relevant: What could President-elect Biden actually change in this country?HOW MUCH POWER DO DEMOCRATS HAVE?We won't know the true power of a Biden presidency until January 5th, when Georgia will hold two Senate runoff elections. Because Republicans are poised to have 50 seats in the Senate at least, Democrats would have to sweep the Georgia races to also get 50 votes. Vice President-elect Harris would be the tie-breaking vote. If the Democrats sweep, Biden's power would increase greatly, especially if Democrats consider rule changes to the filibuster DIVIDED GOVERNMENTAt this moment, Republicans are favored to win at least one seat in Georgia, which means divided government is likely. That would mean passing major progressive legislation, like D.C. statehood, climate change or the public option, would be impossible under Senator Mitch McConnell's leadership. Immigration reform and COVID-19 economic relief legislation would be possible, though, under divided government. EXECUTIVE ORDERSPresident-elect Biden's greatest power would likely be with executive orders. Biden could issue orders such as re-joining the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization. DACA would also be temporarily saved. 1308

OTAY MESA, (KGTV) -- Construction for President Trump's border wall is set to begin the end of the month, but law enforcement is already prepping for protests. There are not too many visitors at the end of the only road that goes into the border project. Agents on ATVs and the occasional semi truck are about all you'll see.But by the looks of everything being put up, it's clear those in charge know something may be coming and they want to keep it out.People familiar with the border project say the fence was put up in the last few days. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department says they are not involved with the construction in any way but that, “the department is currently evaluating the need and possible location of a 'free speech' area where citizens can peacefully express their viewpoints.”Meanwhile, local activists like Border Angels' Enrique Morones told 10News they are not aware of any mass protest that could take place, but they are worried about possible out of town groups coming in and causing a problem. In the same week as the one-year anniversary of the Standing Rock protests over the Dakota Pipeline, law enforcement is guarding this patch near the border as it could become ground zero for the immigration debate. 1248

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County mom is giving thanks as she searches for the "roadside angels" who came to her family's side after a car crash.Aleisha Sargent was behind the wheel with her two kids — 10-year-old Calli and her 7-year-old brother Tyson — in the middle row of the van last Thursday. They stopped at the intersection of Ridge Road and Lake Blvd. when Sargent says her light turned green, a car ran a red light and broadsided her."Just taking my two youngest children to school around 7:30 that morning," said Sargent. "Spun in the middle of the intersection, almost 180 degrees ... My glasses flew off. I have really bad eyesight."RELATED: Guardian Angels conduct first patrol in Pacific BeachThat collision left her disoriented, dazed and upset."Panic. I couldn't see anything. Couldn't see my kids, which was scary. Calli was asking what was happening. Tyson was saying his head hurt," said Sargent. As they sat in the van, a woman appeared next to them."She asked if we were okay, opened the door and helped me and my children to the side of the road, where we sat on the sidewalk. She called 911 ... All I could see was that it was a blond lady with glasses," said Sargent.RELATED: San Diego Police honor boy who risked life to save brother from drowningAnother woman then joined them, a brown-haired woman named Britney. She said she was an off-duty nurse and proceeded to check out the children."They were shaking and scared," said Sargent. Both women reassured them and wrapped them in blankets, before they eventually left. Sargent was able to say thank you to the off-duty nurse, but it was quick."I was able to sit there and hold my children as they calmed down. I didn't have to worry about anything but taking care of my kids," said Sargent.RELATED: Good Samaritans rescue woman from flipped SUV on San Diego freeway Her children suffered minor injuries, but will be okay. It's an outcome Sargent says was made possible by the women she calls her "roadside angels." Sargent is now hoping to track both of them down."I would really like to tell them a sincere, heartfelt 'thank you so much' for stopping, for helping and for comforting," said Sargent. If you know the identity of either of these Good Samaritans, email Tips@10news.com. 2274
