Hurricane Maria was upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane on Monday, with top sustained winds of 160 MPH. As the hurricane continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean, it is expected to strike Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The hurricane could prove to be a disastrous blow to more than 3 million Americans in Puerto Rico. Because of the threat posed to the US territory, Puerto Rico was placed under a hurricane warning by the National Hurricane Center.Earlier on Monday, forecasters predicted Maria's rapid intensification. "Significant strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Maria is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it moves through the Leeward Islands," according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update.  Maria has prompted a hurricane warning for Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. As of early Monday evening, the storm was passing over Dominica. Torrential rainfall could cause deadly flash flooding and mudslides on islands that it crosses. Maria could dump 6 to 12 inches of rain across the Leeward Islands -- including Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands -- through Wednesday night."We want to alert the people of Puerto Rico that this is not an event like we've ever seen before," Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told reporters Monday.And for the first time in 85 years, Puerto Rico is expected to suffer a direct landfall from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. (KGTV) — Mar Vista High School operated under heightened security Tuesday due to a possible threat.Instruction continued in classrooms but Mar Vista's doors were kept locked as part of the security measures, according to Manuel Rubio, public information officer with Sweetwater Union High School District.The campus resumed normal operations just before 1 p.m.The school district was working with the San Diego Sheriff's Department to investigate a possible threat posted to social media, Rubio said.The threat was later determined to be unfounded, though the campus would have increased security through the day, according to Rubio. 679

House Republicans are announcing they're leaving office at a significantly faster rate than any other recent Congresses, suggesting Democrats could pick up seats in the 2018 midterm elections. On Wednesday, CNN reported House speaker, Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan, would be next.Already, at least 42 House Republicans have announced they are retiring, running for another office or resigning outright, including Ryan. They're leaving from all over the map, from southern New Jersey to southern New Mexico.Democrats need to pick up 24 House seats to retake the majority from Republicans, who've had control of the House since 2011.Republican leadership has acknowledged it has a problem."We've got to find better ways to empower people where they feel like this is worth their time," Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas, a former two-term National Republican Congressional Committee chair who met with several members to discuss retirements, told the National Journal in September.But the retirements kept coming.While midterm elections are historically tough for the party of the President in power, it's too early to tell how things will unfold this year. But seats are opening up all over. A few seats will be filled by special elections before next November. But most won't.The locations of some of these seats were pivotal during the push for health care reform and tax reform in 2017. Reps. Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey and Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania were courted during the health care debates for their votes. Both have high numbers of Medicaid enrollees in their districts. Property taxes are high in New Jersey, and LoBiondo objected to the repeal of the state and local tax deduction during the tax reform debates.Some states are seeing higher numbers of open seats.
