SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – On Friday, the president of San Diego's Christian Youth Theater (CYT) held a press conference addressing this week's claims by several former students that they experienced sexual misconduct or sexual abuse by former teachers.CYT President Janie Russell Cox said the San Diego branch will remain dark until further notice as they investigate these abuse claims. “We are fully committed to the safety of every single child and we are grieving for every single individual whom we love and we care so deeply for. We apologize. [We] love you,” Cox added.The El Cajon-based program was founded 40 years ago and is for students ranging from 4 years old to 18 years old. CYT claims to be the largest youth theater group in the country with branches nationwide.Artist Brian Justin Crum, who went on to become a finalist on America's Got Talent, told ABC10 News on Friday that when he was 13 years old, his former CYT teacher invited him to a gay pride event. “I remember him questioning my sexuality and saying basically, like, you should come to this thing and see what you think and see how you feel when you're there and we can go together. I'll take you,” Crum said. “It was creepy. It felt inappropriate.”Crum said he was not assaulted but boundaries were crossed. “There was definitely a culture there where the teachers and the students were too close,” he added.On Tuesday, attorney Jessica Pride told ABC10 News that she's representing a former student who claims to have been sexually abused and several other former students have been contacting the law firm. “I think over the next couple of weeks as things unfold, you're going to see that this was just rampant at CYT and that they didn't do anything to protect these children,” said Pride.When asked Friday about whether staff ignored complaints from former students against former teachers, Cox replied, “I can't answer that. I don't have enough knowledge to know what decisions were made at that time and that's part of our investigation to find out.”Cox told reporters that CYT is starting a diversity committee and looking at doing restructuring to diminish favoritism, nepotism, and discrimination. She said CYT is committed to transparency.San Diego Police told ABC10 News Tuesday that its Sex Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation in which there is an association with CYT.An advocate for several of the alleged victims is asking for any other possible victims to come forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly one week after Election Day and with state Assemblyman Todd Gloria holding a comfortable lead, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry conceded in the race for San Diego mayor.As of Nov. 9 vote totals, Gloria was leading Bry 56% to 46%.During a virtual press conference on Monday, Bry said she called Gloria the day before and offered her congratulations. Regarding the campaign, Bry said she felt voters were misled by the media and political ads from the opposition.Bry said, "I want to congratulate Todd Gloria as the next mayor of San Diego. He and I spoke by phone yesterday, and I offered him my congratulations. But for the next few years, our city faces many challenges because of COVID-19, and Mr. Gloria will have a tough job. Thousands of San Diegans are unemployed through no fault of their own and city revenues are declining."She added, "I wish those issues could have been more central to the mayoral campaign. We certainly tried to make them the focus of our communications. Unfortunately, interest groups supporting my opponent took a different approach.Perhaps inspired by the ‘fake news’ rhetoric coming out of Washington, they spent over million on TV commercials and mailers cynically designed to fool voters into thinking they were sponsored by our campaign. In times past, dishonest advertising of that sort would have been called out by responsible journalists, and voters would have been made aware of these cynical tactics. But the media -- like many citizens -- has become so desensitized to such tactics that they no longer pique their interest. And, unfortunately, these dishonest attacks clearly impacted our campaign."When asked if she would run for mayor again, Bry said she may not seek public office again. She added she plans to take time off with her family before her next endeavor.Bry, 71, will remain on the San Diego City Council until Dec. 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors renewed their concerns over jets rattling their neighborhood less than a week before the F-35 arrives at Marine Corps. Air Station Miramar.The same concerns from University City neighbors voiced in letters to Miramar date back to at least 2012, according to MCAS Miramar Director of Communications Capt. Matthew Gregory.READ RELATED: Neighbors concerned with F-35 coming to MCAS MiramarHe pulled out a map of San Diego County's air space. He pointed to a gray square and said that entire area over the base up to 10,000 feet is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration.Right off the end of the flight deck sits University City, where tragedy struck more than a decade ago. An F/A-18 crashed after having engine trouble, killing four and destroying two homes.With the F-35 coming to MCAS Miramar next week, neighbors are concerned the single-engine jet poses a higher risk.Capt. Gregory says the aircraft is arguably safer, "it is much easier to diagnose any issues and fix those issues."Neighbors are also concerned where the F-35 will fly, "the goal is to have flights as much as possible follow the approved flight paths," San Diego Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry said.She was referencing a map with different colored flight paths. The Marine Corps. stated that map is from 2005, and shows average flight paths based on 5,000 annual operations. They said the map is disproportional and it is solely meant to illustrate the average flight paths for land developers.That came as news to Bry, "I don't think the community understands that. They understand that these are the flight paths they will take."When it comes to noise, "the Navy and Marine Corps have been flying F-18s here in San Diego for the past 30-35 years, so it's going to be very noticeable when the F-35s get here and start taking off," Capt. Gregory said.He added the Navy flew more jets when they ran the base.Overall, the F-35s are expected to make the area slightly quieter.Neighbors are having a meeting later this month, where a representative from Bry's office as well as MCAS Miramar will be present. 2130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 3,000 street lights in San Diego is expected to get ‘eyes and ears’ by the end of the month.Last year, the city announced that they would be retrofitting 3,200 street lights with smart technology.RELATED: Smart street lights coming to San Diego Nearly 3,000 of the “sensor packages” have been installed on existing street lights according to David Graham, Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Smart & Sustainable Communities.  However, they have not yet been activated.The technology on the street lights has a sort of camera and microphone.While it may seem a little “Big Brother-ish” to some, Graham assures the public they won’t be used for spying. The cameras and sensors would only collect data on parking, traffic congestion, and pedestrian safety.
