Excessive alcohol use could increase your risk for all types of dementia, particularly early-onset dementia, according to a new study.The study, published Tuesday in the journal Lancet Public Health,?looked at over 1 million adults released from French hospitals between 2008 and 2013 who were diagnosed with dementia, a clinical syndrome characterized by a progressive deterioration in cognitive ability.Using data from the French National Hospital Discharge database, the researchers found that alcohol-use disorders were diagnosed in 16.5% of the men with dementia and 4% of the women with dementia -- over twice as much as in those without dementia for both sexes.Alcohol-use disorders refer to "the chronic harmful use of alcohol or alcohol dependence," the researchers wrote.In order to isolate the role of alcohol use, patients with neurological disorders such as Parkinson's and Huntington's, which can also lead to dementia, were excluded from the study."The most novel result is the large contribution of alcohol-use disorders to the burden of dementia over the lifespan," said Dr. Michael Schwarzinger, a researcher at the Transitional Health Economics Network in Paris and a leading author of the study.The association was particularly strong for those with early-onset dementia, diagnosed when the patient is younger than 65. Over half of the individuals in the early-onset group had alcohol-related dementia or an additional diagnosis of alcohol-use disorder."Given the strength of the association, what is the most surprising to me is that alcohol-use disorders had received so little interest in dementia research and public health policies," Schwarzinger said.How alcohol might damage the brain 1729

(KGTV) - The 'Golden State Killer' arrest is shining the spotlight on a controversial DNA search known as Familial DNA.    In the summer of 2013, local communities were gripped by fear amid a string of unspeakable crimes.An unknown culprit dubbed 'The Creeper' entered five homes in Escondido and one in San Marcos, cutting screens, cutting the clothes of little girls and molesting them while they slept.The suspect left DNA at several scenes, but a search turned up no matches.  Ultimately the case went cold until detectives applied to the State Department of Justice - for a DNA familial search.In 2015, the mystery DNA profile was linked to somebody already in the system, a close relative of the suspect."They were able to determine through a familial search who the suspect likely was," said Deputy District Attorney Ryan Saunders.That suspect was Gilbert Chavarria, who recently pleaded guilty to a host of charges.  He was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison."Police did an excellent job gathering the evidence, but the leads were exhausted. Without the familial searches, we'd still be on our hands waiting," said Saunders.It marked the first use of the search in a local case.  Amid concerns from privacy advocates, Governor Brown in 2008 enacted a policy that familial DNA would be used only as a last resort.It's been rarely used but did provide the break in several serial killer cases, including the 'Grim Sleeper' case and now, the 'Golden State Killer' case.  In the latter, the mystery DNA was linked to a familial profile from an ancestry website.Some law enforcement experts tell 10News the recent cases could lead to a lot more requests for the DNA search.  Familial DNA also provided the break in the infamous 'BTK' serial killer case in Kansas. 1858

Facebook users in the United States who want to run certain ads on the platform will need to hand over the last four digits of their social security number and a picture of a government-issued ID.The social network now requires anyone who wants to run ads related to political campaigns, civil rights, immigration, guns, economy, and other issues, to prove they're in the United States. Any ad mentioning a candidate will be subject to the new rules.In April, Facebook released a list of 20 "issues" -- including as abortion, education, guns, health, immigration, military and terrorism -- that apply to the new approval process.The last issue on Facebook's list is "values," which the company considers "issues that discuss the values used in determining societal standards, such as patriotism."The new rules mean many marketing campaigns will be subject to the new guidelines. For instance, Super Bowl ads that have in recent years taken on a more socially conscious tone. FALLBROOK (CNS) - Four residents were displaced Tuesday when a fire broke out in the garage and damaged part of their Fallbrook home, authorities said.The blaze was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Pomegranate Lane, off South Stage Coach Lane north of Fallbrook High School, according to North County Fire Protection District spokesman John Choi.Firefighters from the Oceanside and Camp Pendleton fire departments responded to the scene along with Cal Fire San Diego personnel to help douse the blaze, which fully engulfed the garage and extended into portions of the home and the attic, Choi said.Crews knocked down the flames within 35 minutes, but the fire caused extensive damage to the garage and minimal damage to the home, he said.No injuries were reported.The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the displaced residents -- four adults and one pet -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 989

  

Experts say the finalization of a COVID-19 vaccine is in our near future. Dr. William Moss is a professor of epidemiology and the executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.“Remarkable progress has been made in the development of COVID-19 vaccines,” Dr. William Moss said.He says it typically takes five to 10 years to develop a vaccine, but with so much money and attention going toward COVID-19, he believes it’s likely we’ll have a vaccine by the end of the year.“I’m pretty confident that there will be a vaccine that will have an emergency-use authorization in the United States by the end of 2020,” Dr. Moss said.According to Dr. Moss, of the dozens if not hundreds of vaccine candidates in clinical trials, there are three vaccine candidates that have reached phase three. Phase three is when tens of thousands of volunteers test the vaccine to make sure it’s safe and effective.As of this week, we have optimistic news regarding phase-three efficacy results from biopharmaceutical company Pfizer – which has been collaborating with German company BioNTech.“Early preliminary results suggests that their vaccine is 90% or so effective in preventing mild to moderate or severe disease.”If the 90% efficacy data holds up after follow ups from participants in late November, Dr. Moss says he expects the FDA will rigorously review the data and approve the vaccine for distribution. That means health care workers and other high-priority groups would get the vaccine in December of this year, or early next year.“Pfizer says that they could have close to 50 million doses by the end of this year," Dr. Moss said. "Now remember their vaccine – as a number of the vaccine candidates do – requires two doses per individual. So, 50 million doses allows you to vaccinate about 25 million people.”Dr. Moss says the unprecedented investment in vaccine manufacturing will make it possible for the vaccine to be distributed so quickly. However, there are still quite a few logistical challenges since he says the Pfizer vaccine requires extreme cold temperatures as low as minus 117 degrees Fahrenheit.“So we need warehouses to store the vaccine that have freezers that can maintain that cold, we need transportation systems – planes, trucks – that can deliver the vaccine and keep it cold. And then at the site of distribution, we need to be able to keep these vaccines cold.”Therefore, he says it will likely take a lot longer for the general population to get the vaccine. He’s guessing not until the middle of 2021. Of course, the idea of saving lives with the help of a vaccine is very promising, but he says the greatest misconception is that we can go back to "normal" as soon as it’s distributed.“That by no means is going to indicate that we can go back to our pre-pandemic life," Dr. Moss said. "We will not know whether these vaccines stop transmission and we’re going to still need to wear masks, to wash our hands and physically distance even when vaccines become available.”Time and patience will be vital as we wait to see the long-term impacts of the vaccine in this pandemic. 3168
