GREELEY, Colo. — A Colorado woman says she was denied a haircut at a local Great Clips because her baby son was not wearing a mask.Meri Smith decided she was finally ready to get a haircut. It would have been her first one since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. in March.She made an online appointment at Great Clips, and when she went to the salon to check-in, she was told that her son "can't come in" to the building."They said you can't come in because he's under two and he can't wear a mask," Smith said.Smith said she was confused and humiliated by the situation. As a teacher, she's familiar with Colorado's statewide mask mandate and she knows it doesn't apply to children who are 10 and younger."I just felt rejected. It made me sad and uncomfortable that I couldn't go get a haircut just because my son was a baby," Smith said.A spokesperson for Great Clips released the following statement from Michelle Iacovetta, the COO of Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. and a Great Clips franchisee."Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. does not require children under two years of age to wear a mask in our salons, following guidance from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The misunderstanding of this policy that took place recently in our Greeley salon was unfortunate and disappointing. HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania’s secretary of state said Thursday that “we definitely could” know which presidential candidate will win the battleground state by the end of the day.Secretary Kathy Boockvar made the comment when asked about the results during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday.“You know, I’ve been saying that we’ll have the overwhelming majority counted by tomorrow, but it’s looking like we’ll have the overwhelming majority counted by today,” Boockvar said.During the interview taped at about 1:33 p.m. ET, Boockvar added that there were about 550,000 ballots that were still in the process of being counted. By 5:45 p.m., the number of ballots left to be counted dwindled to 326,000 ballots. At that point, Trump's lead dropped to 90,000. “Some of those may have already been counted but are not yet uploaded, but yeah, they’re coming in,” she said. “We’re getting 10,000 here, 20,000 here. Counties are furiously at work and it’s looking like we’re ahead of schedule.”Boockvar said most of the mail-in ballots left to be counted are from the state’s larger cities and the communities that surround them, meaning they may favor former Vice President Joe Biden.Pennsylvania is one of the few remaining states that haven’t been called in a presidential candidate’s favor and it could end up determining who’s in the White House come January. For many Americans, they’re not quite sold on restaurants being safe despite most restaurants taking measures to protect staff and customers.ValuePenguin, which is associated with Lending Tree, conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans. The survey found that 44% of Americans feel indoor restaurants are unsafe to visit amid a pandemic, compared to 40% who believe they are safe. Women were more likely to say indoor dining is unsafe compared to men.More consumers, however, say getting takeout and dining outdoors is safe. Nearly 67% of respondents felt it’s safe to get takeout, and 58% said eating outdoors is safe.What do experts say?Many experts have said even with the precautions restaurants are taking, there is still a sizeable risk of catching the virus while dining inside. These risks, however, are generally significantly lower for those dining outside.Last month in an interview with MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci pointed toward restaurants being among riskiest places to visit amid the pandemic. Fauci added that bars and gyms also are considered risky in his view.“When you have restaurants indoors in a situation where you have a high degree of infection in the community [and] you're not wearing masks, that's a problem,” Dr. Fauci said.Fauci pointed toward a September 2020 CDC study that found those who visited restaurants in the previous two weeks were two times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus than those who said they had not been inside a restaurant.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation,” the CDC said. “Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use.”Economic impact to restaurantsWith many restaurants forced to close indoor operations during the spring, and scale back indoor capacity during the summer, millions were out of work. According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million restaurant workers, representing nearly half of the industry, were without jobs during the height of the pandemic. There remained over 2 million out-of-work restaurant employees as of the start of October.As of Wednesday, 100,000 restaurants have either closed for good, or for a significant period of time. As a whole, the restaurant industry is expected to lose 0 billion by the end of 2020.In hopes of minimizing spread and regaining customer confidence, the CDC and industry leaders have implemented cleaning procedures.
