Russia's Foreign Ministry ordered the expulsion of 23 British diplomats from Russia on Saturday in a tit-for-tat response to Britain's decision to expel Russian envoys in connection with the poisoning of a former Russian double agent and his daughter on British soil. The ministry also declared it was closing the British Consulate General in St. Petersburg and the British Council in Russia, in a step beyond the measures taken by Britain. The British Council is a cultural institute with artistic, language and educational programs. 541

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Democratic Party is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct against chairman Eric Bauman.A party vice chairman, Daraka Larimore-Hall, brought the charges against Bauman last week on behalf of anonymous accusers and called for Bauman's resignation. Larimore-Hall alleged that Bauman sexually harassed and assaulted people during party functions.Larimore-Hall spoke to two accusers and a witness, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported."I take seriously any allegation brought forward by anyone who believes they have been caused pain," Bauman said Saturday in a statement announcing the investigation. "I look forward to putting these allegations behind us and moving forward as unified Democrats."An outside investigator is looking into the claims. Other California Democrats have already called for Bauman to be replaced, including U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and the Orange County Young Democrats.A series of sexual misconduct allegations against lawmakers, lobbyists and others in politics rocked California's political world late last year, at the height of the #MeToo movement. Three Democratic men resigned as state lawmakers after investigators hired by the Legislature found they likely engaged in inappropriate behavior. In a letter to the party last week calling for Bauman's removal, Larimore-Hall said stories from Bauman's accusers illustrate a "clear and escalating pattern" of inappropriate behavior.Larimore-Hall did not respond to a request for comment Monday from The Associated Press.Bauman narrowly won the party chairmanship last year against Kimberly Ellis after a contentious battle between establishment Democrats and progressive activists.During that fight, Bauman said he was falsely targeted by rumors he engaged in inappropriate behavior with teenage boys. Bauman is the party's first openly gay chairman.Bauman called the rumors "despicable lies," and Ellis denounced them.Party officers can be removed from office by a vote of the executive board. Larimore-Hall's call for Bauman's removal still has several steps to clear before reaching a vote. 2122

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom eased the sentences or criminal histories of nearly three dozen current or former felons on Tuesday. They include 10 pardons intended to aid immigrants who face the possibility of deportation. One of the 10 is currently in a federal immigration detention facility. The 10 were among 22 pardons, 13 commutations and four medical reprieves, the last a category prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. The state corrections secretary and a federal court-appointed official recommended the medical risk clemency review. They are in addition to thousands of other earlier releases intended to free space within the state's prison system to slow the virus' spread. 715

Rev. Dr. Monica Cummings doesn’t have to look far from her Kenosha, Wisconsin church to see the damage left by protests that turned violent after the police shooting of Jacob Blake.“Our church shares a property line with the car dealership that was destroyed by fire," Cummings said.Flames spared the Bradford Community Church, but in Kenosha, it's easy to see what wasn't.Bradford's lead pastor, Erik Carlson, sees why.“The anger that produced these demonstrations doesn’t come from a vacuum. It comes from problems in our society dating back in cases hundreds of years that we have not addressed," Carlson said.Carlson is a Unitarian Universalist minister. His sermons are often are about bringing diverse ideas together."We’re not as much united by a specific idea of God, as much as we are netted around a commitment to positive social change and to the idea that we are charged with bringing love into this world," Carlson explained. It’s a faith fit for a city wounded by issues of race and equality.“The church can play a role in terms of having a partnership with the police department, in terms of bringing the community and police together," Cummings said. “It’s a challenge, how to interact with someone who represents a group of people who have historically oppressed you, who have historically traumatized you. How do you engage in an interaction with an individual without being defensive?”Cummings says she also understands the trauma police officers endure, too."Police have trauma, as well. There is no way they could do their job day in and day out without their mental health suffering," she said.Society has many views on how to police, protest, and pray. In this Kenosha church, diversity in race and viewpoints are welcome in finding a path beyond the heartbreak."We don’t like destruction of property, but we understand and appreciate the pain that it comes from," Carlson said. "We rather lose our building and 100 buildings than lose another life to police violence.” 1999

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Governor Jerry Brown has agreed to deploy 400 National Guard troops at President Donald Trump’s request, according to the Associated Press.Brown specified that not all the troops will head to the U.S.-Mexico border and none will enforce federal immigration enforcement. The troops will focus on fighting drug crime, firearms smuggling and human tracking, a letter sent to the Trump by Brown Wednesday said.Brown said the troops will not help build a wall or “detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life.”Trump has said he wants up to 4,000 troops to be sent to the border to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking.Brown said the deployment will happen pending review and approval of the federal government. 758
