With protests erupting across the country during the pandemic and some calling to defund the police, many people are now looking for new ways to stay safe.“When people start getting stretched and they’re already living on the ends, at what point do you start seeing good people make bad decisions,” said Mark James, owner of Panther Protection Services, a private security company in Atlanta, Georgia.His bodyguard services have increased 40% in the past four months, while the firearms training that he offers has increased more than 300% in the same time frame.“People who have never been gun owners before are now buying guns,” he said. “Those people who are buying guns are saying, ‘I have to learn how to use a gun that I just bought for my own personal protection.’”This increase in private security is happening across the country.“Bodyguard services went up at least 100% since this whole COVID-19 era has started, along with some of the racial tensions that are going on,” said Dexter Ravenell, owner of Around the Clock Security in North Carolina.For the past few months, Ravenell has been getting requests from all kinds of people.“From Blacks, whites, Hispanics, male, female,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this as far as the demand that we are getting.”The cost for Ravenell’s services starts at per hour and goes up from there.“It’s good for business but morally it’s kind of sad to see that we’re coming to that now,” he said.James wouldn’t tell us how much he charges but did give some safety tips for free.“I always walk wide to make sure there’s no one on the other side of my vehicle,” he said.James says the best safety advice he can offer is situational awareness.“I’m always looking at the small things which keep me from having to do big things,” he said. 1801

comes in.“Find your anchor is a grassroots movement aimed at suicide awareness and prevention,” Find Your Anchor CEO Ali Borowsky explains. “It all kind of manifests itself into these little blue boxes that we launch into the world. So, you’re walking down the street, you see this little blue box, you open the lid, it says ‘If you’re feeling lost, hopeless, suicidal, this is for you. If not, leave it for someone else in need.’”Find Your Anchor is based out of Orange County, California, but boxes have reached places all across the globe. The boxes can be requested by people in need, ordered by mentors who want to help people in need, or launched in a public place for somebody to find. Borowsky says she thinks launching them organically into the world, is the most powerful way for somebody to encounter a box.“It’s like a message from the universe," she says. "Like ‘I was meant to find this, this was put here for me.’”The box holds multiple items to give people hope: a deck of cards titled “52+ reasons to live”, a bracelet, an infographic on depression, a sticker, a couple posters, some cards on how to become a messenger, and a list of resources. Borowsky felt inspired to create Find Your Anchor, after her own struggles with mental health. She attempted to take her life multiple times. Now, she's helping others who may be in a dark place. Keeping track of each individual box, Borowsky says she’s received notes from many people saying the box has saved their life. And that’s why more and more mental health advocates are standing behind Find Your Anchor.“I like the find your anchor box because it’s empowering the individual immediately, and yet provides resources for them if they need more than just the box,” Amanda Greene says.Greene says she can’t stop ordering Find Your Anchor boxes, because she understands their powerful impact.“Living with chronic illness and having it for a long time, there’s days where you’re like ‘OK, I’m done,’” she says. As soon as the people receiving boxes are in a better place, they’re encouraged to pass it on, adding an item that was an anchor for them.Whether it’s a phone call on the top of a bridge, or a box by the beach, what’s most important for people to realize, is that they’re not alone, they’re loved, help is available, and there is hope.“My core belief in the height of my darkness was that no one would care," Borowsky recalls. With the COVID-19 pandemic creating a demand for homes across the country, housing prices are on the rise.The median price for a single-family home increased to more than 3,000 between July and September, a figure that's increased 12% in the last year.According to Danielle Hale, the Chief Economist at Realtor.com, housing prices increase when there are a large number of buyers and not a lot of homes for sale."With the pandemic, we've actually seen these trends be exacerbated," Hale said. "We have even more buyers in the market, as people are looking for more space and possibly to get out of crowded apartments and into a single-family home where they've got a yard and some outdoor space and room to live and work and play all at home."Hale says prices are up because there aren't enough new homes under construction — a possible overcorrection from the housing market crash 12 years ago when there was more construction than was needed, and the loan market went without the regulation in place today.Hale says that home prices are now rising in a way that could eventually impact affordability."Home prices are rising, but this pace of increase may not be sustainable, especially if mortgage rates steady or start to rise," she said.
