ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Southern California is getting a new tool in the state's fight against wildfires. A new program, called Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System launched September 1. The system uses a fixed-wing aircraft that can see through smoke using using infrared and radar sensors. The plane, according to the Orange County Fire Authority, provides real-time perimeter mapping and live, high definition video to support predictive spread modeling. “The State of California must shift strategies to address the constant crisis of wildfires – this is no longer a seasonal threat,” stated Assemblywoman Petrie-Norris. “I am proud to have partnered with the Orange County Fire Authority in securing .5 million in state funds for technology that will protect lives and property by giving first responders better, stronger tools to use against the threat of wildfires.”The UCSD WIFIRE wildfire spread modeling also projects where and how large the fire will before over a 6-hour time period. The model is built to adjust for successful suppression actions by fire crews. The pilot program is being made available in San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura Counties. 1211

(KGTV) — Neighbors in North County call this "Taking Back Oceanside.""We need to cite, we need to ticket, arrest when possible," said Andrew Andrioff. It's a response to a growing homeless population that's leaving neighbors frightened and frustrated. The San Luis Rey riverbed is covered with needles, tents, trash and shopping carts. Andrioff is behind the movement to change that. He was among dozens of people who addressed city council Wednesday night. RELATED: Oceanside group aims to clean up trash, violence in San Luis Rey riverbedHe says the social services offered in Oceanside may be making the situation worse. "Our concern is that we’re attracting habitual vagrants to Oceanside through these services," said Andrioff. "we don’t want to enable these people to continue to their criminal and drug-addicted lives."Councilwoman Esther Sanchez says the city has three homeless outreach teams but they need more help. "This really is a regional problem, whatever one city does everyone is going to want to go there so we all have to go at the same time," said Sanchez. The problem has only gotten worse since the city is forced to take in more people than it can handle. "Are we going to really be responsible for Orange County cities that are cleaning out the river and giving them one-way tickets to Oceanside?" said Sanchez. "I really think what we should be pushing is a blue ribbon committee, the county, the 18 cities, as well as the state."Recommendations made to the council tonight included declaring an Emergency Shelter Crisis and increasing police enforcement. The Taking Back Oceanside group is set to meet with the chief of police on October 24.  1750

On Monday, electors gathered to formally affirm that President-elect Joe Biden was indeed the victor of the 2020 Presidential Election.During his Electoral College victory speech Monday night in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden spoke about how all Americans have the right to have their vote counted."In America, politicians don't take power," Biden said during his speech. "People grant power to them. The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. The skateboarder and Birdhouse Skateboards have teamed with Black Plague Brewing in Oceanside to create the aptly named, "Tony Hawps IPA." The brew is described as smooth beer brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops for a piney foundation and dry-hopped with Citra and Centennial hops for an orange aroma with hints of grapefruit."Tony Hawk is such an icon; we wanted to partner with him to create something authentic to connect with skate fans and skateboarders. " says Jordan Hoffart, a pro skateboarder and president of Black Plague Brewing. "The beer needed to be light and crushable after a skate session while also having enough heft to be your go-to when you are ready to party."And now in addition to his legendary career and influential exploits off the half-pipe, Hawk has a beer of his own."Never imagined I’d get to help 'design' a new beer, but my life keeps taking unexpected — and delightful — turns. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Census Bureau for the time being to stop following a plan that would have had it winding down operations in order to finish the 2020 census at the end of September. The federal judge in San Jose, California, issued a temporary restraining order late Saturday against the Census Bureau and the Commerce Department, which oversees the agency. The order stops the Census Bureau from winding down operations until a court hearing is held on Sept. 17. The head count of every U.S. resident every ten years helps determine how .5 trillion in federal funding is distributed and how many congressional seats each state gets. Those who have not filled out the paper census yet can fill it out online by going to the official census 2020 website. The temporary restraining order was requested by a coalition of cities, counties and civil rights groups that had sued the Census Bureau, demanding it restore its previous plan for finishing the census at the end of October, instead of using a revised plan to end operations at the end of September. The coalition had argued the earlier deadline would cause the Census Bureau to overlook minority communities in the census, leading to an inaccurate count.Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Census Bureau pushed back ending the count from the end of July to the end of October and asked Congress to extend the deadline for turning in the apportionment numbers from December, as required by law, into next spring. When the Republican-controlled Senate failed to take up the request, the bureau was forced to create a revised schedule that had the census ending in September, according to the statistical agency. 1720
