SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market. Just Call Us Volunteers gives back to those in need year around. They encourage everyone to come spread a little cheer throughout the year. 925

San Diego (KGTV)- Just weeks ago the Veterans Village of San Diego wasn’t sure they’d have the money to fund their annual Stand Down event. But thanks to generous sponsors, the organization is helping hundreds of homeless veterans this weekend. The three-day event is being held at San Diego High School. More than 700 veterans are expected to participate in the event throughout the weekend. A variety of services is being offered. Some veterans say they are in desperate need of housing, while others tell 10News they are just fighting to keep the roofs they already have over their heads. “I’m minding my own business, next thing I hear knocks on the door ‘hey you can’t park here,’” says Vietnam Veteran Robert Ewing who was given 15 parking tickets for his motor home in the last three months. “That’s why I’m here trying to get rid of these.”Ewing says it has been a struggle trying to find a safe place to park his motor home. Among a variety of services, Homeless Court is being provided at the annual Stand Down event. “The City Council needs to sleep on the streets for a couple of nights and see what the homeless go through. It’s no joke,” says Ewing. For more than three decades, the Veterans Village of San Diego has been putting together this event. It brings in more than 100 organizations to help the homeless. Even though donations were low a few weeks ago, organizers say they were never going to cancel the event. They are just grateful for their donors, so they did not have to scale the event down. 1529

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The high temperatures, dry brush, and low humidity are leading to elevated fire danger in San Diego County this week.Cal Fire San Diego is asking everyone to be prepared for the possibility of a wildfire igniting.“We depend on the public to be careful; we depend on the public to be prepared at a moment’s notice to evacuate,” said Cal Fire Captain, Isaac Sanchez.“The fact that the winds aren’t there, it does not help us sleep at night; we’re still very dry. It’s still October, and we know that even though there aren’t winds now, we can bet money that there will be winds later.”As fire danger remains a threat across the county, families braved the heat taking schoolwork outside at Mast Park in Santee, after being stuck at home for months.“It’s so much easier for the kids to stay motivated on getting their work done,” Jennifer Sailler. “It’s harder to stay inside our home with the AC running than it is to be outside in the warm heat.”The heat is also keeping business going for some.“My job requires me to have a close relationship with snakes and the sun,” said Alex Trejo, So-Cal Rattlesnake Removal. “When it’s hot, what they’re actually doing is trying to find shelter. “Trejo removes rattlesnakes from properties and relocates them to areas where they can have a second chance at life.He said he’s been getting more calls for rattlesnake removals in the East County during the hot weather.“It’s very important to understand the nature of the snake; the snake is not out to hurt people, the snake is a survival expert,” he said. “My priority is making sure families are safe during this heatwave because they will be coming on people’s properties right now.”The heat advisory will remain in effect until 5 PM Friday. 1757

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- People living on the streets are worried that the new portable restrooms installed by the city will get shut down because of those using them for illegal activity.  The city installed four portable bathrooms on First and C Street near City Hall. Four hand washing stations were also installed.On Monday, people using the restrooms were thankful and said the restrooms were long overdue. One man, a Navy veteran, told 10News he's used the restroom twice since they were installed. On one of those trips, he found a used needle. He worries drug users will force the city to shut the bathrooms down. The area has 24-hour security. Security guards work in 12- hour shifts. One guard told 10News he warns people that they can't stay in the bathroom for too long. The city plans on installing other portable restrooms at different locations in the coming weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Three healthcare-related offices were burglaries early Thursday morning, where criminals got away with cash and prescription pills. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. The Schedule-2 narcotic often lands in the hands of our youth, which can have deadly consequences. "In this country, we lose 70,000 people who die of drug overdoses every year," Special Agent Ruane said. "This is just another symptom of the major problem and the major addiction issue we have in the country. They wouldn't be stealing these drugs if there wasn't somebody willing to buy them."San Diego police said there appeared to be no connection between the burglary at the plastic surgery office and the others. However, after our inquiry, the Department said they are working with the DEA to look for a possible connection between the two pharmacy burglaries. They are also helping the owners get back on their feet."We will give them suggestions on additional security measures, make sure they are in compliance," Special Agent Ruane said. "Then, use any additional information from this case and others, in working with the San Diego Police Department to try and find these people who committed this burglary and put them in jail."The DEA reminds the community that they can help keep drugs out of the wrong hands by participating in "National Drug Take-Back Day" on October 26, 2019.
