OCEANSIDE (KGTV): A program that offers daily, hot meals to seniors in Oceanside is running out of money and could be forced to close."It’s stressful, it’s super stressful," says Sylvia Spears, the Executive Director of the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association. "I've had sleepless nights, and I’m trying to figure out who do we pay, who do we not pay?"The program gives seniors a hot lunch every day at the Oceanside Senior Citizens Center. For people who can't make it, they also offer home delivery. For a lot of the seniors, it's the only hot meal and the only personal interaction they get all day."We become friends," says Patricia Bonynge, who's been coming to the meals for almost ten years. "Even though we don’t go to each other’s homes or talk on the phone, we come here, and we converse."Bonynge also used the home delivery service for a few months after she had foot surgery and couldn't drive or walk. She says it was a lifeline while she recovered.Spears says the program serves around 50,000 meals every year. That number continues to grow as Americans live longer."Clients are up; donations are down," she says.Right now, the meals are partially funded through a grant from the County. It's part of the Federal "Older Americans Act." The grant is a three-year contract, which expires on December 31st, 2018.But this year, Spears says she decided not to reapply because he hasn't been able to come up with enough money to cover the rest of the budget."Right now we need about 15,000 dollars extra per month to keep going," she says. "That includes our food, kitchen supplies and our trucks."Other organizations, like Meals on Wheels, could step in to fill the gap. Spears is also talking to the City of Oceanside for funding. There's a closed-session City Council meeting Wednesday night to address the issue.The city already lets the Association rent the Senior Center facilities and kitchen for per year. They also work with the San Diego Food Bank to do a monthly food box distribution for seniors who qualify.Despite that, city officials say they realize how important the hot meal program is to older residents."It gives them hope," says City Recreation Supervisor Homer Post. "That hope is what allows them to live until the next day. If you don’t take care of your elderly, you can’t take care of anything that you got going on."Spears is hopeful that someone will come through with a donation to keep the meals going. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- For as long as he can remember, Pino Batallico loved the atmosphere of restaurants. He shared a picture with 10News of him working behind the bar of a restaurant in Italy when he was 8-years-old. He made 25 cents a week.Batallico was born and raised in Italy. All his relatives are still in his home country. He is devastated to see how the Coronavirus pandemic has affected it, with more than 12,000 deaths so far.“I think it’s very scary. It breaks my heart,” Batallico said. In Oceanside, he is feeling the effects of the pandemic through his restaurant Venetos. Pino and his employees still cook up good meals for anyone who wants them.“It doesn't matter if I have a penny or not. I'll still be here,” Batallico said. He said his business is down about 75 percent since the countywide order that prohibits dine-in service at restaurants. He is trying not to lay off any of his 11 employees, although he has had to cut his restaurant’s hours. The restaurant is a place he loves with customers who love him back.“He’s like a brother from another mother!” said customer and now friend, Jesse Teves. Teves said he met Batallico more than 20 years ago. Teves has celebrated important milestones over the years at Pino’s former restaurant in Encinitas and now at Venetos. “He's very humble. He always looks out for the customer,” Teves said. “It just naturally happened that we bonded and he became family.”Batallico said he will cook any Italian dish the customer wants, even if it is not on the menu. Like so many others, he is trying to survive with take out and delivery orders.“Whatever you like to do, we will do for you… to be safe,” Batallico said.His restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Monday and Tuesday, it is open from 4 to 9 p.m. 1803

(KGTV) — Farmers in Oceanside are gearing up to harvest a never before seen crop in San Diego County: Coffee.“We have an aggressive plan to make Southern California the next leader in the super specialty coffee industry,” said Jay Ruskey of Frinj Coffee.He began working with farms in San Diego five years ago to start planting coffee in old avocado orchards.This summer, they will finally harvest their first crop.“We tried to choose the varieties that not only perform well, but have a certain flavor characteristic that the consumer really enjoys,” said Ruskey.Frinj has also been growing coffee in Santa Barbara, where they have already started harvesting the beans.Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is the first local outlet to sell it. Their website has one pound of the Cuicateco grown by Frinj for 0.“If the coffee quality matches the price, that's all that matters,” said Jeff Taylor, president of Bird Rock Coffee.They recently sent the coffee to the website, Coffee Review, which gave the Cuicateco a 92 out of 100.He said he has been working for six months with Ruskey to get the coffee in his stores. He hopes to get beans from Oceanside as well when they become available in the fall.“I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge,” said Taylor of San Diego county’s potential as a coffee growing region.Ruskey is already ahead of him, planning to double the number of plants they have already in 2019.“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” said Ruskey. 1594
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — San Diego County's third-largest city has three-and-half miles of coastline and is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego, making it a natural stop since its earliest days in the 1880s. "Originally, it was on a train depot. It was called Ocean Side; two words," said John Daley, a third generation resident, as he perused photographs at the Oceanside Historical Society. The two-room office near City Hall has become a repository for some 30,000 images and Daley seems to have an anecdote for every one."They had 11 saloons at one time in the 1880s, so apparently they liked saloons," said Daley. "It was a mostly male community at that time and that would be the place to go and eat and socialize. And there wasn't a lot of drinking in the saloons as there is today," Daley said.In fact, the story of Oceanside has a very practical side. Consider the name: Oceanside. Daley says you can thank farmers bound to the nearby fertile inland valley who would occasionally take a break. "They would go to the 'Ocean Side' to go have some fun. And that really became Oceanside," Daley said.Rail lines came in 1881, prompting a homestead in '83, and incorporation in 1888. Founded by land speculator Andrew Jackson Myers, Oceanside was born with 1,100 residents. Numbers destined to rise into the next century as the coastal community continued to become more connected by rail and road. "As soon as they had cars come here we were kind of the easy stopping point between Los Angeles and San Diego or Mexico. We became very prominent for that," said Daley.Oceanside beaches became go-to destinations via the new Highway 101 and business grew. Then came World War II and Camp Pendleton. Oceanside's now 5,000 residents would be outnumbered by a military migration. "As the story goes, they brought in about 7,000 people to build the base because it was such a large base, obviously," said Daley. "Oceanside had to come to grips with feeding, housing and recreating those people. So, people lived everywhere. They lived in sheds and garages."And Daley says an even greater boom would follow in the 1960s and 70s as the region became more well known. Oceanside grew at a rate of 2,000 homes a year while catering to millions of travelers. "Even the restaurant I eventually owned at one time — the 101 Cafe — was called the 101 Cafe and Trailer Park because they allowed trailers in the back of their lot," Daley added.Travelers still stop and some stay. But Daley believes the city is fairly built out at this point. He sees slow growth ahead but a bright future. "We have a beautiful city. I had a restaurant and the tourists always thought they dropped off in paradise when they came here," Daley said. 3019
