Grace Sibley. When officers arrived, they saw a man running from the location and into a second building. The people inside were able to get out before the suspect barricaded himself.Sibley said the suspect had tried to rob the first business but fled after realizing that there were still employees inside.IMPD crisis negotiators and SWAT team members secured the area. After an hours-long standoff, the suspect became agitated and pointed a gun at officers, Sibley said. Officers then shot the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital in serious condition, but is expected to survive. No officers were injured in the shooting.Roads in the area were closed during the standoff, which lasted several hours. The incident remains under investigation. With President Donald Trump in the hospital, his campaign is launching an effort it’s calling “Operation MAGA” to maintain momentum. The operation entails “a full marshalling of top-level surrogates, campaign coalitions and Trump supporters” to carry the campaign until Trump can return to the trail, according to a campaign statement. Vice President Mike Pence and Trump’s family will be prime players in the effort, which will feature a series of online events leading up to Wednesday's vice presidential debate before moving to in-person events. It’s unclear how the new plan differs from the campaign’s operations before Trump was hospitalized. Pence and the first family was already actively campaigning.Pence outlined the effort in an all-staff conference call Saturday afternoon with campaign manager Bill Stepien, who has also been diagnosed with COVID-19.“I want to encourage you to stay in the fight,” Pence told the staff. 939

— are also increasingly getting caught up in dangerous situations, Southwick said. "Journalists reporting on those issues and on activists are being caught up in the same kind of threats that the activists themselves are facing," she added.Southwick said it was essential that governments push back against organized crime and impunity. "They [organized crime gangs] see that there are no consequences for killing journalists — that sends a message that they can continue getting away with it.""We welcome the unprecedented fall in the number of journalists killed in war zones but, at the same time, more and more journalists are being deliberately murdered in connection with their work in democratic countries, which poses a real challenge for the democracies where these journalists live and work," Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire said in a statement. The organization also noted that the number of journalists who had been arbitrarily detained was 12% higher than in 2018, with 389 journalists in prison connected to their work as of December 1.China, the report said, holds a third of arbitrarily detained journalists. 1155

While the most likely scenario shows decreased activity, there is still a chance of another major earthquake striking in the next seven days.“According to our forecast, over the [next week,] there is a 4 percent chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 6.4,” the USGS said. “It is likely that there will be smaller earthquakes over the [next week,] with 40 to 230 magnitude-3 or higher aftershocks. Magnitude 3 and above are large enough to be felt near the epicenter. The number of aftershocks will drop off over time, but a large aftershock can increase the numbers again, temporarily.”The uncertainty in the ground below their feet has thousands of Puerto Ricans sleeping outside.“We don’t know if there is going to be any other quake big enough to do additional damage or bigger than what we’ve seen so far,” said Jochen Braunmiller, a seismologist and research faculty member at the University of South Florida.“I was a little surprised about the actual location of those earthquakes because they are not happening right at the plate boundary between the North American and the Caribbean plate,” Braunmiller said. “They are happening close to the island and above the plate boundary.”Braunmiller said the quakes are hitting in a deformed zone near the upper crust. If the location of the earthquake changes, it could be catastrophic for the island.“The worst-case scenario for Puerto Rico would be a subduction zone earthquake on the order of magnitude 7.5 or 8,” Braunmiller said. “I don’t think from historical data earthquakes have been much bigger than that. It would take out a lot of infrastructure for Puerto Rico for quite a while.”The USGS is continually updating their forecast 1720

for setting an illegal trap in Missoula, Montana, that killed a young dog.Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks regional supervisor Randy Arnold says the illegal trap was set near the Clark Fork River off of Hiberta Street.A family with their dog were recreating in that area on Sunday, when their 17-month old dog was caught in the trap and died. The two men were cited with state charges; one count of failure to appropriately mark the trap and one count of an illegal ground set. Missoula Animal Control also cited the men for illegally trapping within city limits.Arnold says this was uncommon and very disappointing, saying setting illegal traps in obvious public places is something state wildlife agencies do not condone."By setting traps in a way in violation of how ground sets need to be set, puts at risk dogs and anybody recreating in the area," Arnold said. "Those regulations are in place to prevent these things from happening. If someone violates these regulations then you get these really unfortunate accidents."This article was written by Melissa Rafferty for KPAX. 1084
