BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday met with nearly 60 foreign political leaders and scholars on the eve of a forum to discuss global trends and common challenges.The forum will take place in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday and is organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),the country's top advisory body.The forum's theme for its fourth conference is "new era, new challenges, new vision -- building a future for all.""It is significant for the 21st Century Forum to hold a conference on the global situation, challenges and visions," Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said.More than 100 officials, scholars and business executives from home and abroad will attend the two-day conference of the 21st Century Forum.As the world has been undergoing deep changes, transformation and adjustment, it is imperative for all countries to be interdependent, reform the international financial system and build a justifiable and reasonable world order, Jia told the foreign attendees to the forum.Among the foreign attendees are some well-known dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.Jia briefed foreign leaders on China's economic and social development, stressing China remained the world's biggest developing country despite its economic boom."It will take China decades of unremitting efforts to accomplish modernization," Jia said, adding China would adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Jia said China would continue to pursue peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all countries in accordance with its independent foreign policy.Jia reaffirmed China's efforts to play its due part in dealing with global challenges and contributing to world peace and development.Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all countries to pursue a path of cooperation and common prosperity.After the meeting, Jia also hosted a welcome banquet for forum attendees.The 21st Century Forum convened its first conference in 1996. The purpose of the forum is to serve as a platform for leaders, scholars and experts from China and other countries to explore global trends and crucial issues of common interest to mankind in the 21st century. 

HANOI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday met separately with the prime ministers of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in Hanoi ahead of a series of summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners.At the meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen hailed Vietnam's preparation for the upcoming meetings, saying that China would join with Vietnam to ensure the success of the meetings at a time of profound changes going on in the international situation.Wen called for proper handling of the issue of South China Sea, saying it is of vital importance to the sound and stable development of China-Vietnam relations.He noted that China and Vietnam have established a negotiation mechanism to solve the issue, and he hoped the two countries would discuss and sign an agreement on basic principles guiding the solution to the issues of the sea as early as possible.Dung agreed with Wen's remarks.Expressing the high importance China placed on the summits, Wen said China would strengthen communication and coordination with Vietnam and work with all sides concerned to push forward East Asian cooperation.Wen said friendship and cooperation have remained the mainstream of China-Vietnam relations since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic ties 60 years ago. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 12, and 36 are still missing, the rescue headquarters said Thursday.By 9:30 p.m. Thursday, rescuers had saved 23 people from the rubble of homes in Hedong Village of Longyang District in Baoshan City, headquarters officials said at the site.The accident happened at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting on a sleep slope which had been soaked in rainfall for about ten days.More than 1,000 people have participated in the rescue operation and more than 120 medical workers are treating the injured and disinfecting the site.Tents, quilts, clothes and plenty of first-aid materials have been sent to the site where rescuers are evacuating people to safe places.

NANJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) - Three months after high school, 18-year-old Wang Mingyuan landed a part-time job in KTK Group, one of China's leading railway components manufacturers, in east China's Jiangsu Province.Unlike other migrant workers, Wang also started a three-year vocational school education at the same time, thanks to the work-study program launched this year by the Jiangsu provincial government.The program offers employment opportunities in high-technology and community-service fields to vocational school students. Currently, Wang works three days of each week in the company and spends another two days as a student, learning computer science and engineering."I felt very depressed about the future when I knew I failed the college entrance exam. But after attending the work-study program, I think if I work hard, I may fare as well as those with college educations," Wang said."Through the program, I could gain career-related, on-the-job work experience, which is valuable for my job hunting and career development," he continued.For a long time, college has been seen as a necessary, even if not sufficient, ticket to the middle class by the Chinese people.
