Starbucks bathrooms will be open to anyone who wants to use them, whether they're a paying customer or not, Chairman Howard Schultz said Thursday.Schultz made the announcement following the uproar over the way two black men were treated at a Starbucks in Philadelphia last month. The men asked to use the bathroom, but an employee told them it was only for paying customers. When they then sat in the store without ordering anything, the manager called police, and the men were arrested for trespassing. No charges were filed.Starbucks has since apologized to the men and announced plans for extra racial bias training for its employees."We don't want to become a public bathroom, but we're going to make the right decision 100% of the time and give people the key, because we don't want anyone at Starbucks to feel as if we are not giving access to you to the bathroom because you are less than. We want you to be more than," Schultz said during a talk at the Atlantic Council in Washington.Schultz said the company currently has a "loose" policy of only allowing paying customers to use the bathroom, with the decision ultimately left to the store manager. But he said the policy and the decision by the Philadelphia store manager last month were "absolutely wrong in every way.""It's the company that's responsible," he added.Starbucks didn't immediately respond to a request for further details about the change announced by Schultz.Starbucks has said it will close its 8,000 company-owned stores in the United States on the afternoon of May 29 to educate employees about racial bias. The training for about 175,000 workers "will be the largest kind of training of its kind on perhaps one of the most systemic subjects and issues facing our country," Schultz said.  1779

SINGAPORE (AP) — A Royal Caribbean “cruise to nowhere” has been cut short and the ship has returned to Singapore after an elderly passenger was diagnosed with the coronavirus, but the health ministry later said new tests on the man were negative. Meanwhile, passengers onboard are not able to disembark from the ship until full contact tracing measures are carried out and everyone is tested for coronavirus. The ship had 1,680 passengers and 1,148 crew members onboard.Royal Caribbean and Singapore’s Tourism Board said the 83-year-old passenger tested positive for COVID-19 after reporting to the ship’s medical center with diarrhea and was immediately isolated. But Singapore’s health ministry said later that it retested the man and found him negative. It says it will conduct another test Thursday to confirm his status. "We worked closely with the government to develop a thorough system that tests and monitors all guests and crew and follows public health best practices," a Royal Caribbean representative told CNN. "That we were able to quickly identify this single case and take immediate action is a sign that the system is working as it was designed to do."Singapore recently began a “safe cruising” program allowing cruise ships to make round trips from Singapore with no ports of call. The Quantum of the Seas ship was hosting a three-night, four-day cruise around Singapore, a so-called "cruise to nowhere." All passengers had to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding and wear masks at all times outside their rooms. The ship was regularly cycling in fresh air and was operating at 50% capacity. 1638

Spectators might have to kiss a decades-old tradition goodbye in Savannah's St. Patrick's Day parade.Women in the crowd are known to dash out into the streets and plant a smooch on uniformed service members marching in the Georgia port city's St. Patrick's Day parade, the second-largest in the United States and third-largest in the world. But military officials and parade organizers are hoping to curb amorous paradegoers this year. The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee announced last week it wants the pastime to come to a halt, something it's been attempting for years. The practice predates the 1960s but has gotten out of hand over time, said Brian Counihan, general chairman of city's parade committee.Kevin Larson, spokesman for nearby Fort Stewart, said that the military is just asking people to police themselves. It's not a law or a rule. Larson said that the soldiers marching in the parade are at work. They have to maintain their professionalism because they are representing the Army."At the end of the day, we enjoy taking part in these events," Larson said. "But we do need people to respect our soldiers' space."The bystanders running into the streets can also spark safety and security concerns."You can imagine when you have all these people marching, it causes a disturbance," Counihan said.He said the rush interrupts the movement of floats, causes service members to lose their formation and results in huge delays. The parade committee has tried to stop people from rushing into the streets before. Years ago, it told participants on floats not to throw beads or candy out into the crowd as a way to prevent anyone from getting hurt. The Savannah event started more than 190 years ago. About 280 units, including bands, soldiers and floats, march through the downtown streets of Georgia's oldest city. With this year's parade on Saturday, the committee is expecting more than 500,000 to show up, and all the hotels in the area have sold out, Counihan said.Typically, those watching the parade can just run into the streets and plant one on any passing soldier. Larson said that military officials know the bystanders can't be forced to stop."There are some people who like it and some who don't," he said. "It comes down to personal preference."He said that officials have suggested that soldiers who do not want to be kissed can say no or offer a handshake instead.Still, the parade committee chief insists, "We are not party poopers."This is a large event, and we are just trying to discourage people from interfering with these units," Counihan said. "It's just a little bit dangerous, and we want everybody safe."The-CNN-Wire 2668

Southwest Airlines says it has canceled roughly 1 per cent of its scheduled flights as it carries out inspections prompted by an engine failure that led to a passenger's death last week. About 40 flights were impacted. The affected Southwest Boeing 737 took off Tuesday morning from New York, headed for Dallas. About 20 minutes into the flight, at about 32,500 feet, a fan blade broke off the engine and shrapnel shattered a window.Jennifer Riordan, 43, and a mother of two, was almost sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers. She died from blunt force trauma at a hospital after the plane's emergency landing in Philadelphia. 670
