SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel is being called a valor thief, but his accusers have not produced hard evidence to back up their claims. Navy veteran and Republican state assembly candidate Larry Wilske addressed the media on Monday in front of downtown's USS Midway. He and others say the former mayor of Santee, Voepel, misrepresented his military service record. "This is serious business. It's a slap in the face to veterans," says Wilske. Wilske was joined by private investigator and retired Master Chief Petty Officer Terence Hoey, who has been looking into Voepel's military records.  "He's not a purple heart recipient, although he's repeatedly stated that he is and his chief of staff has doubled down on his claim," says Hoey. They're also alleging that Voepel falsely claimed he had combat experience in Vietnam. However, military discharge documents sent to us by Voepel's staff show that he served on the USS Buchanan and was awarded a ribbon for combat action, and was awarded other honors related to his service in Vietnam. The Wilske supporters believe the discharge documents have been forged. “This document has been altered, thus rendering the form essentially void,” says Hoey. Voepel’s staff denies that Voepel ever claimed to have been awarded a purple heart and 10News couldn’t find proof of the claim, anywhere. Additionally, a military service record provided by Hoey does not include a purple heart award in his list of decorations. Wilske and his supporters say there are multiple credible witness testimonies and video evidence that’ll reveal the whole truth, but they have yet to be fully produced. Wilske and Hoey deny that their allegations of stolen valor are tied to political mudslinging. “The one thing we can't square here is that round peg with Voepel and his wild and comedic claims,” adds Hoey. There was one alleged witness at Monday’s press conference. He said he’s a veteran who met Voepel at a recent political event and claims Voepel lied to his face about his service history. Voepel’s staff is unsure as to whether the two have ever even met.  Voepel denied our request for an interview. He denies all allegations of stolen valor. 2273

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Harbor Police Tuesday arrested a man accused of attacking a teen Syrian refugee on board an MTS trolley, sparking a hate crime investigation. According to police, 26-year-old Adrian Vergara was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor narcotic charge. During his arrest, Vergara was recognized as being wanted in connection to an ongoing hate crime investigation, police said. The arrest stems from the beating of a 17-year-old Syrian refugee on a San Diego Trolley car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? Are you Mexican?"RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeThe teen reportedly responded, "No, I am Arab."According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim reportedly exited the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. He said the man also got off the trolley and left the scene.Numerous people reportedly watched as the victim was attacked, but no one stepped in to help him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County health officials reported Friday 11 hospitalizations due to vaping. Those who have been hospitalized range from 17 to 70 years old, according to County of San Diego Communications Specialist Tom Christensen. The illnesses come as U.S. health officials urge people to stop vaping until they can determine the cause of serious breathing illnesses. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting. Some 450 cases and as many as five deaths have been identified in 33 states, including California. However, many of those who were sickened said they had been vaping THC. There's been a split among public health experts about the value of vaping nicotine. Some argue e-cigarettes are not as lethal as conventional cigarettes and can be a valuable aide to smokers trying to kick the habit But others say studies have not established that adult smokers who try vaping end up quitting smoking long term. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are searching for a gunman after one person was shot and injured in the Logan Heights area on Sunday.Police said a 24-year-old man was sitting on his porch at 2248 Ocean View Blvd. when a vehicle drove up. A suspect exited the passenger side of the vehicle and fire one shot, hitting the victim in the buttocks.The suspect got back in the vehicle and fled the scene.The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.SDPD officers are investigating the shooting. 532

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has served Pacers Showgirls International with a cease and desist order in violation of health orders days after San Diego Padres outfielder Tommy Pham was stabbed outside the strip club.The county's letter says the Midway District strip club was allowing "live entertainment," like exotic dancing, "in violation of the Order of the State Health Officer and County Order of the Health Officer and Emergency Regulations."Under the county's current tier for California's pandemic guidance, San Diego County restaurants are allowed to operate outdoor in-person dining and indoor in-person dining at 25% capacity, but live entertainment is not allowed.The county's letter says if the strip club doesn't suspend its entertainment, it can receive a misdemeanor citation and ,000 fine for each violation. The facility could be ordered to close as well.The order says the violations were reported after Pham was stabbed in the parking lot outside the strip club on Sunday night.San Diego Police said Pham was involved in an altercation.
