"It's weird being a 16 year old these days," Reid Sotkin said. You could say Sotkin is just your average kid. He's a junior at Jenks High School who likes to hang out with friends. And oh, by the way, he's an investment guru."I just googled what books Warren Buffet recommended and that's kind of how I got my start," Sotkin said.One of his favorite books?"Actually this book right here," he said. It's called facial biometrics, and essentially, travelers’ faces are their boarding passes. One of the companies behind the facial recognition technology at the airport is SITA. A machine scans the traveler’s face right before you board, ensuring the right people are getting on the plane. "There is an element of enhanced confidence in your flight about who is on your flight from this activity," says Janice Kephart, former National Security Director says. That's because U.S. Customs and Border Protection, along with SITA, uses your face against terror watch lists and illegal aliens. "In the first two months, we've got 62 imposters that we could’ve missed, because human beings are pretty lousy when it comes to determining imposters," says Colleen Manaher, executive director of U.S. Customs and Borders Protection. Manaher says biometric technology is enhancing traveler safety and convenience at airports around the country. The agency hopes one day TSA will jump on board with using facial biometrics. The new technology is currently being used at airports in Miami, Orlando and Atlanta. 1316

A Farmington Hills, Michigan, man is facing several charges accused of stealing from the unemployment insurance agency, then showboating his lavish lifestyle on social media with stacks of cash, luxury cars and appearing to brag to law enforcement.This is a brazen crime spree that started back in April. US Attorney Mathew Schneider says if you think you can steal from the government and not get caught, you’d better think again.“This unemployment fraud could be the largest fraud against the taxpayers in a generation,” Schneider said.Andre Taylor Jr., 27, of Farmington Hills, is charged with three counts of wire fraud, three counts of aggravated identity theft and four counts of mail fraud after he allegedly defrauded the Michigan unemployment insurance agency, credit card companies and stole identities of area residents.“It’s stunning the amount of money that is being taken away from people who are unemployed,” Schneider said.Taylor is accused of filing unemployment claims in Michigan and other states. It’s alleged he had the state unemployment agencies send him 0 in prepaid credit cards, an additional weekly benefit during the pandemic for people out of work, and spent those gifts cards an Meijer, Kroger and other stores. He would even allegedly mailed some of the cards to his house and relatives.“When you’re unemployed and you need that money for yourself that goes to feed your family, there’s only so much money available and when people like this steal that money away, it really hurts the people of Michigan,” Schneider said.US Attorney Mathew Schneider says Taylor would then post pictures of mounds of cash, luxury cars and more on social media. Schneider says it wasn’t the feds who brought them this case, it was the USPS who say Taylor would bribe mail carriers to steal debit and credit cards along their routes.“In this case it was the US postal service. Those postal workers are doing a great job and now in our country we hear people talking bad things about the postal service; they’re the ones bringing us these cases,” Schneider said.Schneider says it’s disgusting to see people stealing from people who need the money the most, but promises they’re not done yet.“So, whether or not you’re going to brag about it on social media or not, we are going to follow the money trail until we track you down,” he said.This investigation is still in the early stages. Peak flu season is starting now, and doctors say to get ready for a potentially extended season. This year’s flu season has been rough, with the CDC reporting the flu is widespread in 24 states, with 19 states reporting high levels of flu activity. That's more than double the activity of the previous week. A total of 13 children have died so far this flu season. Doctors say it could get worse. “Flu activity has taken off our projection is that it's going to continue to increase, probably for the next few months,” says Dr. Andrew Walshak with Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Walshak says he expects to see more flu cases around the country. “The graph of flu activity in our hospital is just increasing,” he explains. “It's just a slow upward, so we're only at the beginning of flu season right now.” Everyone is at risk: your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. “It can really affect the lungs and affect our ability to get oxygen in our bodies, and that's what primarily the fatalities have been caused by his severe breathing problems,” he says. Dr. Walshak says it's not too late to get the flu shot. Vaccines protect against multiple flu strains. “So, just because one strain of flu is circulating in the community doesn't mean that another strain of flu won't circulate later in the flu season,” Dr. Walshak says. “So, I tell patients it's never too late to get your flu shot.” An estimated 80,000 people died during the 2017-2018 flu season, according to the CDC. 1513

IDAHO — Newly released court documents are shedding light on the disappearance of Joshua "J.J." Vallow and Tylee Ryan, whose remains were found last week on Chad Daybell's property in Idaho.A probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, filed June 10 in Madison County, outlines what led investigators to Daybell's home and ultimately to the remains of the missing children. This includes cell phone location data of the kids' uncle Alex Cox around the time of their disappearance, as well as text messages Daybell sent to his wife at the time.Tylee, 17, was last seen Sep. 8, 2019, at Yellowstone National Park, while J.J., 7, was last seen on the 22nd. The FBI's Cellular Analysis Survey Team discovered through Cox's cell phone GPS that he was at Daybell's home on Sep. 9 and 23.Cox, the brother of the kids' mother Lori Vallow Daybell, was with the two kids and their mom in Yellowstone that day, verified through photos. They returned home to Rexburg around 8:30 that night.Between 2:42 and 3:37 a.m. Sep. 9, Cox’s phone was at Lori and the kids’ apartment. He lived in a separate apartment in the same complex. They had moved there from Arizona on or around Sep. 1.“This is significant, not only because he was there in the middle of the night, but also because this is the only time in September he appears to go over to Lori’s between midnight and 6 a.m.,” the probable cause statement read.Later that same morning, GPS data indicates that Cox went to Chad Daybell’s home in Salem — specifically outside near the east end of a barn on the property. He appeared to have been on the property from 9:21 to 11:39 a.m. The FBI also discovered text messages between Tammy and Chad Daybell, who were married at the time. Tammy died on Oct. 19, 2019, and Chad married Lori just weeks later.On Sep. 9 at 11:53 a.m., Chad sent a text message to Tammy that said:“Well, I've had an interesting morning! I felt I should bum all of the limb debris by the fire pit before it got too soaked by the coming storms. While I did so, I spotted a big racoon along the fence. I hurried and got my gun, and he was still walking along. I got close enough that one shot did the trick. He is now in our pet cemetery. Fun times!”Investigators spoke to Tammy’s sister about a week before serving a search warrant on Daybell’s property, who confirmed that the couple had a “pet cemetery” on their land. She also confirmed its location to investigators on an aerial photograph. The location was near a firepit where Cox’s phone location was pinged.Cox’s phone was again pinged to Daybell’s property on Sep. 23, the day after J.J. was last seen.J.J. was last seen on Sep. 22 at his home by two of Lori’s friends who were visiting. The next morning, the friends asked Lori where J.J. was, and she told them Cox had come and taken him after he was “acting like a zombie” — which the friends also say Lori had said about Tylee several months before.Cox’s cell phone was again located at Daybell’s property on the morning of Sep. 23 from 9:55 a.m. to 10:12 a.m. The location was specifically pinged to a pond on the northern edge of Daybell’s property.Investigators also noted that Cox was at Daybell’s home two other times: Sep. 6 and Sep. 25, these times inside Daybell’s house and not at the firepit or pond.After discovering this information, investigators obtained and executed a search warrant on Daybell’s property on June 9. They dug in the two locations where Cox’s phone location showed him on the two days after each child’s disappearance and found both their remains.Lori and Chad are both in jail on million bond. Lori is charged with desertion and nonsupport of her children, while Chad is charged with destruction or concealment of evidence.Cox died in December of a heart attack.
