INDIANAPOLIS —  Scammers are getting smarter about how they take your hard-earned money.According to new research from the Federal Trade Commission, a new twist is emerging on a scam targeting grandparents — the scammers now want you to mail cold hard cash.Typically, scammers ask you to wire money or send gift cards, but now they're going the old-fashioned route.The FTC found a striking increase in the amount of money people ages 70 and older are losing to fraud.Currently, people 70 years old and older report losing about ,000 in cash, compared to ,000 to other age groups.Typically, the scammers pose as grandchildren or other friends and family in trouble and ask the victim to send them money in the mail.The FTC reports consumers have lost million over the last year to the friends and family scam, compared to million in the previous year."In about half of the reports of cash payments, people said the caller claimed to be in jail or other legal trouble," said Emma Fletcher, FTC spokeswoman. "About a third of these reports mentioned a so-called car accident (some mentioning texting or drinking while driving). In both cases, the callers play on people’s emotions and sense of loyalty. They may be told they’re the only person trusted enough to call for help, and they’re often told not to tell anyone."The scammers often use personal details from social media sites to make their stories more believable and often give very specific instructions about how to send cash."Many people said they were told to divide the bills into envelopes and place them between the pages of a magazine," Fletcher said. INDIANAPOLIS — A member of Congress has introduced a bill taking aim at protesters. The "Support Peaceful Protest Act," introduced by Indiana Rep. Jim Banks, would ban protesters convicted on crimes such as violence, looting, or vandalism from federal unemployment assistance. It was introduced on August 28, following several nights of demonstrations in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Protesters would also be held financially liable for the cost of federal policing.In a press release, Banks said:"Antifa thugs are descending on suffering communities, disrupting peaceful protests and leaving violence, looting and vandalism in their wake. They turned Milwaukee, Seattle and Portland into warzones, and now they're moving the chaos to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Who knows which community is next?"The bill is not expected to move in Congress. Ivanka Trump last year often used a personal email account to discuss or relay official White House business, according to emails released Monday by nonpartisan watchdog group.According to emails released by American Oversight, Trump used her personal account through much of 2017 to email Cabinet officials, White House aides and her assistants. The Presidential Records Act requires all official White House communications and records be preserved.The Washington Post was first to report on the emails. The White House had no comment on Ivanka Trump's email practices.Trump's usage of a private email account will bring comparisons to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose usage of a private email server instead of a government email account during her time in office was a central part of President Donald Trump's campaign against her in 2016. Trump's supporters often chanted -- and still do, on occasion -- "Lock her up!" at the mention of Clinton, and President Trump has frequently accused Clinton of receiving special treatment because she was not charged for skirting the Presidential Records Act with her email practices.Peter Mirijanian, the spokesperson for Ivanka Trump's attorney and ethics counsel, said in a statement, "Like most people, before entering into government service, Ms. Trump used a private email. When she entered the government, she was given a government email account for official use. While transitioning into government, until the White House  provided her the same guidance they had to others who started before she did, Ms. Trump sometimes used her private account, almost always for logistics and scheduling concerning her family."Some advisers to President Donald Trump were alarmed when they heard this news, the Post reports, because of the similarities to Clinton's email use. INDIANAPOLIS -- The two men accused of shooting and killing a 1-year-old were at home playing video games at the time, the mother of one of the suspects said Wednesday morning.Darrin Banks, 27, and Brian Palmer, 29, have been charged with shooting and killing 1-year-old Malaysia Robson on March 30. "I want the detectives, I want whoever, to pull up Microsoft and see where they have logged in," Renee Sloan, Palmer's mother,  said. "You have dinged these men as murderers. You have put a tag on them as murderers, and they're not murderers."Robson was killed when gunfire struck her home on the 3500 block of Wittfield Avenue. Police have said it began as a dispute on social media. Someone then drove to the home and opened fire at around 2 a.m. Banks and Palmer face preliminary charges of murder and aggravated assault. "The whole community is talking about Darrin Banks and Brian Palmer," Sloan said. "Those are their names. They're not murderers. They're human beings and they have names. They did not do this. That is not in their demeanor. That is not how they work. That is not what they do. I want to have a voice for them. Everyone else has a voice but those two. I want people to know what type of people they are."The weekend after Robson was killed, the 1-year-old's grandmother helped organize a call for unity in the community and a march to reduce gun violence.For Robson's grandmother, it was a way to remember her grandchild and push for change so no family ever has to go through the same loss."For anyone with kids - go home and love your kids like never before," she said. Malaysia Robson is the youngest victim of a fatal shooting in Indianapolis since 2013.
