LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Craft breweries in Orange and San Diego are among beer makers suing Gov. Gavin Newsom, alleging constitutional violations because of a requirement that they serve meals to visitors in order to operate tasting rooms -- a coronavirus-related restriction not imposed on the state's winemakers, according to court papers obtained Friday.In the suit filed late Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, the California Craft Brewers Association contends that requiring beer manufacturers to serve food as a perquisite to keeping tasting rooms open, but exempting similarly situated wineries, is "arbitrary, irrational and unconstitutional."San Diego brewery Second Chance and the Orange-based breweries Green Cheek and Chapman Crafted Beer are among local manufacturers to have been "irreparably harmed by the state's actions in response to COVID-19, including most significantly by the sit-down, dine-in meal requirement," the lawsuit maintains.A Newsom representative could not immediately be reached for comment. The suit also names as a defendant Sandra Shewry, who has been serving as the state Department of Public Health's acting director until the newly chosen director can be confirmed by the Senate.The suit alleges that the public health mandate "was not supported by scientific data, or an explanation of how the provision of meals achieves the goal of slowing the spread of the virus," according to the CCBA, which represents the state's over 1,050 craft breweries.The brewers' rights group contends that the mandate violates the beer manufacturers' constitutional rights to equal protection and due process. 1641

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Adopters from across North America will travel to LAX Sunday to welcome some very special new members of their families — dogs rescued from the Chinese dog-meat trade.Two flights will arrive Sunday carrying a total of 27 canines, who will find loving homes in the United States and Canada thanks to the efforts of No Dogs Left Behind — a nonprofit group that rescues dogs from slaughterhouses, dog meat trucks, wet markets, and illegal dog traffickers.Eighteen of the dogs are beagles, and they'll be staying with fosters who work with The Beagle Freedom Project, which is sponsoring the flight along with NDLB and New York-based Rescue Paw Foundation.The remaining nine dogs have already been adopted. They were chosen via emails, phone calls, and even video chats, and will be greeted at the airport on Sunday by their new families, including some who have waited almost a year to meet their new furry friends."It takes a special person to fall in love with one of these sweet survivors over pictures and videos," Brandy Cherven, NDLB's president of adoptions and transports, told City News Service. "They never gave up on their dogs, and we are forever grateful to them. We are overjoyed to finally get them home where they belong."Kristine Wallace, director of operations for NDLB, said Sunday "will be a very exciting and emotional time for everyone involved to see the survivors start their new life as cherished members of a new family."The second flight was arranged to accommodate two larger dogs, a Malamute named Timber and a three-legged Husky named Ingrid whose crates were too large to fit on the first flight.For all the dogs, it will mark the conclusion of a long ordeal that featured a post-rescue quarantine, an overseas flight, and Customs review at LAX.Jeffrey Beri, the driving force behind NDLB, has spent four years on the ground in China rescuing and rehabilitating dogs — the last 10 months under especially tough conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic.Once then animals are rescued, they are taken to NDLB's shelters in China, where they receive medical care, nutritional support, and physical and emotional rehabilitation to make them adoptable. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The state's Franchise Tax Board announced Thursday new tax-filing relief for people affected by wildfires that broke out in San Diego County and other counties throughout the state in September.Taxpayers in areas that were declared disaster areas by Gov. Gavin Newsom are granted an extension until Jan. 15 to file California tax returns on 2019 income and make any tax payments that would have been due between Sept. 4 and Jan. 15."With more time to file and make certain payments, we hope to provide some relief to families and workers affected by these devastating wildfires," State Controller and FTB chair Betty T. Yee said in a statement.The relief applies to various upcoming tax-filing deadlines including:-- individual filers whose previous tax-filing extension was set to end Oct. 15. Any tax payments associated with the filings are not eligible for relief since they were initially due July 15-- business entities with a due date between September and Dec. 15-- quarterly tax payments due Sept. 15Wildfire victims may also claim a deduction on their 2019 income tax returns or next year's returns for a disaster loss sustained in an area proclaimed by the governor to be in a state of emergency, according to the Franchise Tax Board, which noted that those who have already filed tax returns this year can file an amended return.Taxpayers should write the name of the fire in blue or black ink at the top of their tax returns to alert the Franchise Tax Board. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A fruit vendor who was severely beaten while preparing for his work day in Los Angeles is having surgery for his injuries Monday.Pedro Daniel Reyes, 54, was approached by a group in two cars in downtown Los Angeles Sunday at 5 a.m. at 31st and San Pedro Streets, according to Los Angeles Police.The group demanded Reyes' money and that of another street vendor, the LAPD said.Reyes gave the men his money but they attacked him, leaving him with facial fractures, a broken jaw, and a slashed throat, said Reyes' stepson John Patrick.A GoFundMe page said Reyes, who is from Oaxaca, Mexico, works as a roofer six days a week and sells fruit on Sundays. Reyes’ recovery is expected to take at least six months, Patrick said.Two other victims received minor injuries.Los Angeles Police believe the attackers are four black men between 25 and 40 years old, and a black woman about 25 years old. 937

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Georgia Engel, who played the charmingly innocent, small-voiced Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and amassed a string of other TV and stage credits, has died. She was 70.Engel died Friday in Princeton, New Jersey, said her friend and executor, John Quilty. The cause of death was unknown because she was a Christian Scientist and didn't see doctors, Quilty said Monday.Engel was best known for her role as Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," whose character was improbably destined to marry pompous anchorman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight.Engel also had recurring roles on "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Hot in Cleveland." She was a five-time Emmy nominee, receiving two nods for the late Moore's show and three for "Everybody Loves Raymond."Engel's prolific career included guest appearances on a variety of shows, including "The Love Boat," ''Fantasy Island," ''Coach" and "Two and a Half Men." Her "Hot in Cleveland" role reunited her with Betty White, her co-star in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."She appeared on Broadway in plays and musicals including "Hello, Dolly!", "The Boys from Syracuse" and, most recently, "The Drowsey Chaperone" in 2006-07.Engel's final credited television appearance came last year in the Netflix series "One Day at a Time." 1299
