SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New numbers show San Diego housing costs are taking up more than a third of people’s income. 57 percent of renters spend more than a third on housing and so do 40 percent of homeowners. That's the result of the annual Equinox Project released Thursday by the Center for Sustainable Energy in San Diego.Mikaella Bolling, the project’s manager says it boils down to supply and demand.“A lot of people say well we don't want development in my neighborhood or we don't want infill development in our neighborhood, but this is actually the solution that's going to allow us to have more affordable units,” she said.She points to the need for more partnerships to bridge the gaps and educate the public.   “We need to have a better conversation between our residents, between our policymakers, and between our developers,” she said.The cost of a median single-family home in the county jumped 6.5 percent from 2016 to 2017. It’s now upwards of 5,000.“We're seeing that increase every year.  Great for homeowners...but not great for buyers,” Bolling added. Krysta Cordill is a certified financial planner with D’Arcy Capital in Carmel Valley.“There's really no magic to it,” she said. “You have to make saving for a home a priority.” Cordill is a past president of the San Diego Financial Planners Association and has seen more clients worry about whether they can afford the high cost of living. “If you have a Roth Ira or traditional IRA, they allow you to take ,000 of that penalty-free for first-time home-buyers," Cordill said.  She says people should consider starting in a condo or townhouse. “Just know that that's part of the process of home ownership,” Cordill said. As for saving, she offered up some simple tricks. “I've never talked to anyone who cannot pair down their expenses,” she said. First, she suggests cutting out easy online spending.  Instead, say to yourself, ‘If I really need it, I'm going to go to the store.’”Cordill also suggests that you make your morning cup of coffee at home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation say Donovan State Prison officials confiscated a cell phone Tuesday from an inmate who was allegedly using the phone to harass and threaten a woman in New York.According to Christina Neal, 37-year-old Brandon Baker, a prisoner serving 75 years to life at Donovan in South San Diego County, contacted her nearly two weeks ago.“I started getting messages from someone named Brandon Baker, but I had never heard of him before,” Neal said. Neal says Baker found her on Facebook through mutual friends and family members and then began sending her inappropriate messages through Facebook messenger.“He put ‘ma, what’s up, you looking really good. I’d like to get to know you,’” Neal said. “and he was like, ‘you're really sexy.’ And I didn't respond. So then a couple of days later, I got another message from him, and he's talking about my daughter.” “So I was just like ‘I don't know who you are. I don't know how you got pictures of me and my daughter, but please leave me alone, I'm married, and I don't want to have anything to do with you,’” Neal added.Neal says the tone of the messages escalated and Baker told her he would be getting out next month.“He said he was gonna come to my house and said he was gonna rape me,” she said. “I’m very nervous, just because hearing what (he) did, (he) doesn’t seem like (he’s) that nice of a person.”CDCR says they are investigating the case, and Baker could face more punishment depending on what they find on the phone they seized.They released the following statement:“Contraband cellphones are often used to in criminal and illicit activities, conduct drug trafficking, enable gang communication, and harass and intimidate victims and witnesses. Their presence affects safety and security in state prisons and California’s communities. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation uses a multi-layered approach to detect and find contraband cellphones. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — On Friday, there was confusion and frustration with Poway Unified School District's reopening plans this fall from parents like Mark Meadows. “I think they should make their decisions based on the facts. Not based on something that they made up or something that they misinterpreted,” Meadows said.In a letter sent out earlier this week, PUSD reported, in part, that it planned for the possibility to resume classes in-person after the county was off the state's monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. The letter reads, "However, the new metrics announced to San Diego County superintendents [Tuesday], require our county to be off the monitoring list for two 14-day cycles (a total of 28 consecutive days)."That 28-day part is incorrect, county officials said Friday.PUSD reported to parents that the district would continue with virtual learning through December.On Thursday night, Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps told ABC10 News, “The reason why we chose going to December was that after talking to our district administrators and staff, we wanted some continuity of learning for our children to ensure that so that we could finish whatever option we started with like finish a whole entire quarter or trimester.”“[If this goes through December] it would require us a lot of schedule shifting and possibly paying for some type of tutor or nanny to watch our child while they're at their virtual class during the day,” added Meadows.Dr. Kim-Phelps said she sent the letter after getting new guidelines during a tele-briefing on Tuesday with the county but the county confirmed Friday that PUSD's information is incorrect.Friday afternoon, PUSD reported that was no misunderstanding on its part and directed ABC10 News to a county slide that reads, in part, that on Day 28, schools can reopen for in-person instruction.PUSD added on Friday, “There's no change in our plans." 1909

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are looking for a driver involved in a two-car crash that injured pedestrians Tuesday night.The crash happened at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street near Balboa Park. One couple said they were headed to the Haunted Trail at Balboa Park and were waiting to cross the street when they saw two cars headed for them.“I just saw the headlights going towards me, and if I didn't dodge that car, I would have been pinned on that tree. When I fell on the floor I saw that car slam on that tree,” one of the pedestrians said.  Police say a white Toyota was headed south on Sixth Avenue and as it was crossing the intersection of Laurel Street, it was hit by a blue Honda that was making a left turn onto Sixth Avenue.  The driver of the Toyota stayed on scene, but police say the driver of the Honda took off.Officers did not have a very description of the driver, and it’s unclear if there were passengers in their car.  Police say three people were transported to the hospital. All had minor injuries. 1053
