The Equifax data breach was bad for a lot of people but good for a few companies that sell identity theft protection.The hack, which Equifax announced last Thursday, exposed Social Security numbers, drivers licenses and other personal information of 143 million people. And that was just in the United States.Equifax said people in the U.K. and Canada were also affected by the data breach, but it hasn't said how many. Equifax says it has records on more than 800 million people worldwide.Demand for identity theft protection just went up. A lot.One company, LifeLock says it has gotten over 100,000 customer signups since the Equifax news broke. It said it's enrolling 10 times as many customers every hour now as a result.The Equifax breach was not the largest ever, but it was notable for the kind of information that was put at risk.LifeLock says its increase in business is greater than it was after two other big breaches -- an attack on Yahoo last year and one in 2015 against insurance giant Anthem."We've had more people sign up for LifeLock in the past three days than during the entire Yahoo or Anthem breaches," Fran Rosch, executive VP and GM of Symantec's consumer business unit, told CNN Tech on Monday.LifeLock sells identity protection like credit monitoring, black market surveillance, stolen fund reimbursements, crimes committed in your name, and fake identity monitoring. Its service costs between .99 to .99 a month.Another company that says it has seen an uptick in business is CreditKarma, which provides free credit reports and monitoring. It told CNN Tech it saw a 50% increase in signups over the weekend and a 50% increase in search traffic.CreditKarma analyzes credit profiles, suggesting product recommendations to help users save money. If you take its recommendations, it then makes a cut from the bank or lender behind the product.Equifax itself is in the fraud alert business. It has a host of products under the Equifax brand, as well as an offshoot called TrustedID. In the wake of the data breach, it is offering one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection with TrustedID Premier. It clarified this week that those who sign up will not be automatically renewed and charged.Of course, a year of the TrustedID service for free could be enough to convince some customers to renew and start paying."They can exploit this breach to market to consumers who never had to worry about their credit report before," said Amanda Werner, campaign manager with Americans for Financial Reform and Public Citizen.Equifax did not respond to a request for comment for this article.Experts warn that one year is not enough to cover the damage caused by the breach on consumers."Criminals will certainly try to monetize the leaked data and perform ID theft for far longer than one year after this attack," Katie Moussouris, founder of Luta Security, told CNN Tech.Bill Kowlaski, director of operations at Rehmann Corporate Investigative Services and a former FBI agent, agrees. The Environmental Protection Agency confirmed Monday the content of internal EPA emails that appear to contradict EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's claim he didn't know about or authorize big pay raises for two close aides.However, an EPA spokeswoman said there was no evidence in the emails that Pruitt knew about the pay raises.The Atlantic reported last Monday that Pruitt requested pay raises for "two of his closest aides," in March, a request the White House declined, according to a source with knowledge of the discussion. EPA then used an obscure provision to give the staffers, Sarah Greenwalt and Millan Hupp, the raises.On Wednesday, Pruitt told Fox News, "I did not know that they got the pay raises until (Tuesday)."The EPA spokeswoman confirmed to CNN an email exchange, also first reported by The Atlantic, between Greenwalt and the human resources department at the EPA. She previously worked with Pruitt in the Oklahoma attorney general's office.In one of the emails, EPA's human resources department tells Greenwalt that it processed her title change. When Greenwalt asks what her salary increase was, the department told her there was no increase in her salary. Greenwalt responded that the administrator indicated she should have one, referring to a salary increase."There's no way to prove what she said is true; a lot of people say the administrator said this or that," said the EPA spokeswoman, who reached out to CNN to explain the emails.The spokeswoman confirmed she saw the emails and confirmed the content of the emails. The cost of education can last a lifetime, as many people into their 50s and 60s are finding out.According to Federal Reserve, 2.8 million people in the U.S. over the age of 60 are sitting on some amount of student debt, a number that quadrupled from 700,000 in 2005 and continues to grow.“This is really a sledgehammer against the older generation in more ways than one,” says Alan Collinge, creator of online advocacy group for borrowers Student Loan Justice.Collinge has been campaigning for change surrounding laws for student loans since 2005, after trying to figure out a way to pay off his own crippling college costs.“It’s a really devastating phenomenon, and I’m seeing it destroy, literally wreck, families across the country,” Collinge says. In 2018, Americans over the age of 50 owed more than 0 billion in student loans, up from billion in 2004, according to the Federal Reserve.And most can’t afford to pay, forcing retirees to continue to work well past retirement age.“The problem has become exponentially worse since we began this fight 13 years ago,” he says.In Collinge’s group, he hears stories from people ages 18 to 80 years old, who can hardly afford to live, let alone retire.“The federal government can and does garnish Social Security from seniors as a result of their student loans, so we’re hearing stories from people who at the end of the month they’re unable to buy medicine even unable to pay their rent,” Collinge says, “What kind of country does this to their senior people?”On top of that, Collinge says more people in their 50s and 60s are taking out Parent Plus loans to help their children and grandchildren pay for college, which adds to the financial burden.“This is a nationally threatening phenomenon,” he said. Through his advocacy group, he tries to offer help and resources to folks who are struggling.
