SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California hospitals dealing with an “extreme” number of patients, many are struggling to find enough staff to run nearly full intensive care units.The state is urgently searching for 3,000 temporary medical workers to meet the demand, with a focus on nurses trained in critical care.“Staffing is our number one challenge,” Governor Gavin Newsom said last week.The state has contracted with two travel nursing agencies to find reinforcements, including San Diego-based Aya Healthcare, the nation’s largest travel nursing company.“California has the most needs in the country right now,” said Aya vice president Sophia Morris. “It’s the number one state that we’re seeing need.”Aya is onboarding new travel nurses as quickly as possible, Morris said, but at the moment they can’t keep up with demand. Right now, about one-third of the requests for travel nurses are going unfilled, said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.“We are adding hundreds and hundreds of new clinicians to start, particularly in California, every week,” Morris said. “So it’s coming. I think it just feels like it’s not coming fast enough.”Aya said it is on track to add about 780 more travel nurses in California by mid-January, on top of the 2,676 travel clinicians that are already on assignment in the state.But some experts say it’s a particularly challenging time to find spare nurses with so many regions across the country dealing with surges.On top of that, the number of registered nurses over 60 has dipped in California, according to researchers at UCSF, who found many older nurses stopped working out of concern for their health or the health of their family.California hospitals are confronting the shortage by trying to free up staff any way they can, including postponing certain medical procedures.The state has also temporarily loosened some restrictions. Typically, California requires one nurse for every two ICU patients. Regulators have temporarily relaxed that requirement to one nurse for every three ICU patients.California has also shortened the quarantine period for healthcare staff exposed in certain situations from 10 days to 7.The state has sent more than 600 temporary healthcare workers to hard-hit counties from the National Guard, the California Health Corps and other partnerships, but officials are still looking for more.State officials have even started reaching out to other countries like Australia and Taiwan to get much-needed medical workers. 2520

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were killed Tuesday night in two separate crashes on state Route 54 in the Paradise Hills area.At around 9:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said a male driver lost control of his pickup truck and overturned off westbound SR-54 near Reo Drive.According to the CHP, the driver and his three female passengers was ejected. The driver was then run over by a passing vehicle, the CHP said.The driver, who was not identified, was declared dead at the scene. The three women were taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.About an hour after the deadly rollover, CHP officials said a Honda CRV slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stopped in the backup traffic on westbound SR-54 caused by the initial wreck.ABC 10News learned a passenger in the CRV died in the crash, but the driver left the scene and has not been located.The Silverado's female driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries.Both crashes are under investigation; the CHP said "alcohol/and or drugs are suspected factors" in the second collision. 1116
