SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Caltrans is starting a yearlong pilot program in San Diego to reduce wrong-way driving.The agency has installed markings at 30 locations that include red arrows and "DO NOT ENTER" written across the pavement that are only legible when driving in the wrong direction onto freeway ramps.The markings will stay up until the end of the year, according to Caltrans.The agency says that a previous three-year pilot program helped reduce wrong-way driving by 44% in San Diego. The program utilized special reflectors, sensors, and illuminated signs in early 2018.Now, those specialized reflectors have been installed on hundreds of miles of highways, according to Caltrans."The number of wrong-way drivers decreased significantly during the initial pilot program," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. "The addition of these markings, along with what we have learned thus far, will go a long way as we continue to study ways to deter wrong-way drivers."While wrong-way crashes only account for less than 1% of all crashes on California's highways, they are often among the deadliest, Caltrans said."We are constantly looking for ways to improve safety on the transportation system," said Caltrans (San Diego area) District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened on northbound I-15 at Rancho Bernardo Road before 6 p.m. At this time, the cause of the crash is unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego County's back country communities brace for the prospect of losing power, political leaders are starting to take aim at the idea of pulling the plug on them.San Diego Gas and Electric has notified upwards of 30,000 customers that it could cut their power Thursday if it deems necessary to prevent a wildfire. At a news conference in San Diego Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom praised SDG&E as a leader in wildfire prevention, but expressed frustration at the situation. He directed most of his anger toward Pacific Gas and Electric, which has cut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Northern California to prevent its equipment from starting wildfires. "And by the way, I'm outraged because it didn’t need to happen," said Newsom.RELATED: SDG&E prepares for Public Safety Power Shutoff as Santa Ana winds approachZoraya Griffin, a spokeswoman for SDG&E, said turning off power is a last resort. She said the utility is in communication with fire departments and has crews and arborists deployed across the county. "The population here in San Diego really need to be mindful that this is about their safety at the end of the day," Griffin said. SDG&E began the practice of cutting power in 2013.
