Pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced on its website that it had received permission from the Food and Drug Administration that they can enroll children as young as 12 in its COVID-19 vaccine trial.According to CNN, this is the first coronavirus vaccine trial in the U.S. to include children." By doing so, we will be able to better understand the potential safety and efficacy of the vaccine in individuals from more ages and backgrounds," the company said on its website. The Vaccine Research Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital says teenagers aged 16 and 17 will get the vaccine this week, and children between 12 and 15 years old will be enrolled in the trial later, CNN reported. The drugmaker, which is in Phase 2/3 of its trial, enrolled more than 37,000 participants, and over 31,000 of them have received a second dose of the vaccine. In September, the company expanded its enrollment to 44,000 to begin trials on teenagers as young as 16 and anyone with chronic, stable HIV, Hepatitis C, or Hepatitis B.Pfizer is one of four companies currently in the U.S. to have a vaccine trial deep into Phase 3: Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson.Johnson & Johnson had to pause its trial on Monday due to a participant getting an "unexplained illness."AstraZeneca paused its trial on Sept. 8 due to "potential unexplained illness," but the company said on its website that it resumed the trial on Sept. 12. 1433

OXFORD, Ohio — It came in a screenshot of a group chat: One white student called a group of black students the n-word.Some students organized a movement to rally for more inclusive change. A Snapchat message of that rally was posted with the caption "Who let the zoo out?" -- followed by monkey emojis, often a symbolic slur used against black people.Nationally, college enrollment among black people has skyrocketed, according to Pew Research Center: In 2012, they made up 14 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds enrolled in college. But at Miami University of Ohio, black students make up less than 5 percent of the undergraduate and graduate population.A group of students say Miami must do better. After the two recent displays of bigotry, they want to see action from the top, not just words."Racist people are going be racist," said Davaughn Golden, a member of Miami's Black Student Action Association. The organization is calling on other Miami students to step up to racism when they see it."It's about holding your friends accountable, because if you like to say it's not an individual issue, we have to prove that -- by when an individual is racist, the community has to respond," Golden said.University President Greg Crawford met with the students this week. And he sent a tweet, saying, in part, that he can't tackle the issue alone."We all must play an active role in creating the kind of community where everyone feels welcome," he wrote.Claire Wagner, university spokeswoman, said sometimes it takes an extra step: Asking a friend if they realize what they really said, and how it can affect others.De'Vante Montgomery, president of the Southwest Ohio Black Democrats, said many of his peers want to see more action. They're asking for pre-orientation diversity training and reforming recruitment practices, among other changes."We want to see something done that Miami is moving in that right direction," Montgomery said.Wagner is optimistic Miami is helping to grow the next generation of leaders, "in a variety of ways.""I do want them to continue to be leaders because I hope they would agree the university is not the offending entity here," she said. 2178

PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, one of the most prominent women to lead a Fortune 500 company, will step down on Oct. 3.She will remain as chairwoman of the board of directors until early 2019. Nooyi, 62, will be replaced by Pepsi's global operations chief Ramon Laguarta, 54.Nooyi, who was born in India, is one of a handful of people of color to lead a Fortune 500 company. She helped turn Pepsi into one of the most successful food and beverage companies in the world. Sales grew 80% during her 12-year tenure. She spearheaded Pepsi's transition to a greener, more environmentally aware company.Nooyi has been with Pepsi for 24 years. Before becoming CEO she led the company's expansion through acquisitions, including its 2001 purchase of Quaker Oats Co. She earned million last year, and million over the last three years, according to company filings."Growing up in India, I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary company," she said. Her departure leaves only 24 women leading Fortune 500 companies, after Beth Ford became the CEO of Land O'Lakes just last week. Just more than a year ago there were 32 women leading Fortune 500 companies, meaning that the number of women in top jobs at the nation's largest companies has dropped by more than 20% in just over a year.Since the middle of last year several high-profile female CEOs announced they were stepping down last year, including Marissa Mayer at Yahoo, Irene Rosenfeld at Mondelez and Meg Whitman of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.Related: Why it matters so much every time a woman CEO leavesLaguarta, Nooyi's successor, has served as president of PepsiCo since September 2017, overseeing global operations, corporate strategy, public policy and government affairs. Laguarta is also an immigrant, having been born in Spain. He had previously been CEO of the European and sub-Saharan African unit of Pepsi before being named the company's president.Nooyi praised her successor, calling him "exactly the right person to build on our success."Pepsi's stock lagged the broader market in recent years, and it has trailed rival Coca-Cola. Shares are down 1.5% this year, compared to a 5% rise in the S&P 500 index. Shares of Pepsi were slightly higher in pre-market trading.Americans' growing distaste for sugary sodas has hurt both Coke and Pepsi. In 2014 activist investor Nelson Peltz pushed for Pepsi to spin off its snack business as a separate company. But Nooyi was able to fight off calls to break up the company..-- CNNMoney's Paul R. La Monica and Julia Carpenter contributed to this report.The-CNN-Wire 2608

Outdoor equipment retailer REI announced they are looking to sell their brand new corporate headquarters in Washington, as they embrace working from home and remote work options.“The dramatic events of 2020 have challenged us to reexamine and rethink every aspect of our business and many of the assumptions of the past. That includes where and how we work,” said REI President and CEO Eric Artz, in a video call with employees Wednesday. “As a result, our new experience of 'headquarters' will be very different than the one we imagined more than four years ago.”The company’s headquarters is being built in the Seattle area, in Bellevue, and is roughly 400,000 square feet and sits on eight acres of land. Corporate staff was planning on moving in to the newly-completed building this summer, according to the Seattle Times. REI transitioned to nearly 100 percent remote work in early March for corporate staff. Washington reported some of the earliest cases of coronavirus in the country.Retail stores closed in March across the country and recently reopened. The company admits the sale will also benefit them financially. They cite safety and preventative measures retail stores and the company have taken during the pandemic, in addition to slower sales with the temporary closure of stores.Artz and the board of directors have taken paycuts and in July, REI announced a 5 percent reduction in staff.REI says they will embrace remote work as an “engrained, supported, and normalized model for headquarters employees, offering flexibility for more employees to live and work outside of the Puget Sound region and shrinking the co-op’s carbon footprint.” 1665

PHOENIX — Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego says one area hospital is nearing capacity in its morgue and may be requesting refrigerated trucks. The morgue at the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office is also reportedly near capacity.Gallego said Friday morning that officials are looking at an option to prevent problems at the Phoenix-area Abrazo Health Hospital."It's specific just to one area…this is not a statewide problem," Gallego said. "Maricopa County... is looking at everything they can do."Abrazo Health later issued a statement saying that they have "adequate" morgue space, but are taking "proactive" steps to ensure they have overflow morgue space if needed.Gallego added that "we are losing too many Arizonans." She also urged Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to require mask usage throughout the state.Gallego's office released an additional statement Friday, detailing information from the city's meetings with the "Maricopa County Unified Command Center."The command center team shared that the Maricopa Office of the Medical Examiner is at 96% capacity and is working to "secure a contract for refrigerator trucks.""I'm heartbroken...it's been a rough week for me," Gallego said, citing that the White House officials have said everything is under control and that she has been asking for too much support amid the fight against coronavirus.Gallego also mentioned that Phoenix is hoping to receive federal testing support by July 16.This story was originally published by Ashley Loose on KNXV in Phoenix. 1520
