SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has seen a nearly 5% increase in its response to the 2020 Census above the 2010 response rate, according to state census data.Data collected through Tuesday indicates 72.9% of county households have responded this year, as opposed to 68% in 2010, mirroring an increased response rate statewide.Census officials say that California's 2020 self-response rates surpassed the 2010 rate on Wednesday, with 68.4% of California households responding either online, by phone or mail. The 2010 rate was 68.2%.State census officials touted the success of their outreach campaign, particularly given California is considered one of the ``hardest-to-count'' states in the country due its size and a high number of people who are difficult to contact for census purposes, such as recent immigrants, people who lack high-speed internet access or people with limited English proficiency.Campaign efforts will continue until the Sept. 30 deadline.``It is through the collective efforts of millions of Californians that we have surpassed our 2010 self-response rate. But make no mistake -- we are not done yet. A 32-year-old man was killed and a 37-year old man went to the hospital with a wound to the torso, according to San Diego police. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Recent rainfall has led to an influx of seabirds washing ashore and becoming beached along San Diego's coast, the San Diego Humane Society said Friday.The organization's Project Wildlife program, which focuses on animal rehabilitation and conservation, has recently cared for multiple seabirds, including loons, western grebes and a blue-footed booby who became beached during periods of high surf and stormy weather.Seabird diets are also affected by rainfall as vacillating ocean temperatures cause their food sources to dive deeper than normal. Consequently, the birds are often too weak to get past strong coastal waves into the open ocean. Humane Society animal care staff recently transferred their rescued birds to SeaWorld for further rehabilitative care.Residents are advised to contact a lifeguard, the Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement division at 619-299-7012, ext. 1, or SeaWorld at 800-541- 7325 if they see a beached or struggling seabird. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Collaborative Clinical Trials Unit at UC San Diego has been selected to lead and administer an international seven-year, million grant for HIV/AIDS clinical trials.The National Institutes of Health selected UCSD, along with other American, South African and Indian research hospitals, as part of its seven-year HIV/AIDS funding renewal. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A.
