SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many Black female voters in San Diego voters are celebrating Joe Biden’s decision to choose California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.“This is a historic moment. I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? Dr. Kyra Greene, the executive director at the Center on Policy Initiatives, said Harris would bring new life to this race while appealing to a wide range of voters.“She’s young enough to attract young folks but old enough to show experience and to be taken seriously,” said Greene. “I think it will help with women who were disappointed not to see other women advance further in this race, and I also think it will help with Black voters.”“I think Senator Harris speaks to people who are interested in change because she herself has gone through an evolution on these issues,” she said.Greene said the decision not only makes history but will reenergize some of the most politically engaged San Diegans. 1678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra is being remembered as a family man with a complex and troubled life.“He’d always keep a smile on his face regardless of whatever he was going through," Abril Huerta told ABC 10News.Ibarra, 25, was shot and killed after allegedly pointing a revolver at a San Diego Police Department officer in Downtown San Diego on Saturday night.According to police, officers recognized Ibarra from a wanted poster in connection with a robbery that happened last week. Police said officers tried to talk with Ibarra but he walked away.Ibarra then dropped some items from his arms and "reached into his waistband," according to police. That's when officers, fearing for their lives, opened fire, police said.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoABC 10News asked Huerta if Ibarra was known to carry a weapon. She said Ibarra "wasn’t a saint" and that he had a "complicated background."Ibarra was sentenced to three years in prison stemming from a domestic abuse case in 2013, according to court records obtained by ABC 10News.Huerta, who said she was the love of Ibarra’s life, told ABC 10News that he leaves behind three children.“He loved his family," Huerta told 10News in a statement. "He was the most loyal individual you could ever meet and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you were in need."“He only wanted to defend himself from any harm that were to come his way,” she said. The police department has not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - IKEA is recalling a type of candy sold at certain stores in California, including the San Diego location in Mission Valley.The Godis P?skkyckling marshmallow candy may be contaminated. The chain did not immediately release the source of the possible contamination but said the health risk is low.IKEA said the candy is a seasonal product and only 400 bags have been sold since it became available in February.If you bought the candy, you may return it to the nearest IKEA store for a full refund. 523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine biologists and other experts are at Fiesta Island Tuesday morning to try to determine what caused the death of a large whale.The gray whale was discovered by lifeguards on the shore of Blacks Beach Monday at about 11 a.m.The dead whale was eventually towed from the Torrey Pines area to Fiesta Island, arriving at 3:30 p.m.Officials with the National Marine Fisheries were called to Fiesta Island to perform a necropsy.After Tuesday's examination, the whale is expected to be transported to the Miramar Landfill.  552

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379
