SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Food banks across San Diego say demand is up, and volunteering is down as the Coronavirus pandemic spreads."There are a lot of unknowns right now," says James Floros, the CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank.Floros says they've already had dozens of volunteer groups cancel their upcoming shifts, as the CDC and state and local governments advise against any large gatherings.Meanwhile, he says demand is skyrocketing, since many people are losing money from reduced shifts, or losing access to meals they get from work, communal gatherings or other places."We know a lot of the service industry are getting laid off, school closures, what have you," says Floros. "So, we're creating our plans to ramp up our service to the community."The Food Bank serves 350,000 people a year, providing food to numerous outreach groups who then distribute it to people who are food insecure.But as distributions become harder to coordinate with new social distancing guidelines, groups are having to rethink the way they get food to those who need it."we have to reinvent the paradigm and figure out ways to get food to people who are self-isolating," says Vince Hall, the CEO of Feeding San Diego. "Because they're complying with the edicts of health officials, but they're cut off from the food that keeps them healthy."Hall says his group has canceled all group volunteer events. But they're still allowing people to volunteer on an individual basis to help deliver food.The food banks also encourage donations."It makes me sad," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family grieved the loss of a father, mother and daughter after a raging fire at their Logan Heights home in October.Thursday evening Aunt Rosa Cortes explained how the two surviving children, Wendy, 23, and Angel, 16, were faring. She described areas of Wendy's back and shoulder healing from the burns, saying her skin is getting it's color back.She said her niece and nephew are having a hard time sleeping, saying in Spanish, "every noise, every sound scares them."The fire ignited October 13th, around 4:30 a.m.. Neighbors woke up to screams. Ultimately the father, Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Daughter Iris, 21, and mother, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, died from their injuries.Aunt Rosa said Jose was her favorite brother. She called him her protector.Now she's protecting his two surviving children, saying they can continue staying with her as long as they need.Thursday the family reunited inside Faith on 54th in Oak Park.Cortes said the caskets remained closed and she didn't want to remember them the way they died.Her nephew, Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested on Arson and Homicide charges.She said Wendy and Angel haven't been told about their brother's possible involvement, instead waiting for them to heal before asking questions.Cortes said they need help, psychologically and monetarily to move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite criticism, a spokesperson for the California Republican Party told ABC 10News on Tuesday that the party will continue placing unofficial ballot drop boxes around communities.They've popped up in Orange, Los Angeles, and Fresno counties, but so far none have been reported in San Diego. Several have been labeled "official", as confirmed by CA GOP spokesperson Hector Barajas. “We could've had better wording on the ballot boxes and so we changed some of the wording around already on the ballot boxes but the important thing to remember is that these ballot boxes are inside our campaign headquarters or inside of businesses or other organizations. It's not as though they're outside in front of a mailbox or outside a library or a secondhand store or another place of business,” he told ABC 10News.On Monday, California's Secretary of State and the State Attorney General sent a cease and desist to the GOP, calling the boxes illegal. Some argue that the boxes are deceptive and could lead to tampering. “These boxes are not the same as county election drop boxes that are required to meet state security standards,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.Barajas told ABC 10News, “What is happening right now is the Secretary of State -- with this cease and desist -- is basically looking to engage in voter suppression [by] eliminating more options for individuals to be able to drop off their ballot.”Barajas said that "ballot harvesting" is a practice that allows a third party to collect voters' completed ballots and was legalized four years ago in a bill authored by San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.A tweet Tuesday from one of Gonzalez’s accounts reads, "Apparently, Republicans in our legislature think that when I wrote that a voter could designate a 'person' to turn in their ballot, they thought I meant a fraudulently labeled box. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this.
