Other banks, including Chase and Wells Fargo, encouraged affected customers to reach out for assistance.While some loans may have fair terms, government employees are warned to beware of so-called predatory lenders during the shutdown. The California Department of Business Oversight (CDBO) has established guidelines to protect borrowers from illegal and improper lending practices. The agency is warning government workers against excessively high fees and commissions, high interest rates, high-cost credit insurance, and refinancing with higher fees, known as “loan flipping”. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dangerous rescues are on the rise on the cliffs along San Diego's coastline.Broken bones, medical emergencies, even death: these are just some of the calls to San Diego Lifeguards, tasked with performing these rescues. According to a recent Team10 investigation, those calls to lifeguards have doubled in the past four years."We're out here assisting people on a weekly basis," lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said. "It's pretty dangerous; people can fall, people have fallen, people have died, people have suffered traumatic injuries."Romero said lifeguards average 70 to 100 rescues a year at Sunset Cliffs and Black's Beach. The less-serious calls have been anything from people getting stuck, to medical emergencies, to hikers simply getting lost. The more serious calls involved traumatic injuries and death.RELATED: Cliff, air rescues on the rise in San Diego CountyAccording to data 10News requested from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego Lifeguards, there have been 74 cliff rescue calls from June 2017 to the beginning of October 2018. Of those calls, nine serious injuries and one death have occurred this year at Sunset Cliffs. Black's Beach had 11 serious injury calls.Romero said the uptick could be explained as the secret spots no longer being secret."We've seen population growth, tourism growth, social media growth...all affect just more people coming down," Romero said.Lifeguards are on duty 24/7 to help in these situations. Cliff rescues have become so common, rope skills are now as basic for them as work in the water.Carrying 40 to 50 pounds of gear each, typically seven lifeguards and three trucks respond to most cliff rescues. Romero said while each rescue is different, most take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.Resources are pulled from other areas along the beach. If rescue crews need to use a helicopter, the cost is more than ,000 an hour to operate.The rescues are paid for by taxpayers, provided by the city, no matter if the patient is a victim of an accident or reckless."We just ask people to bring their cell phones, pay attention to where they're going, have sturdy footwear," Romero said. 2193

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the election nears, millions of people will be glued to smartphones and computer screens, scrolling through social media for instant information.But platforms like Twitter and Facebook may not be the best sources for information."The way the algorithms work, they promote stuff that gets a lot of reaction or a lot of engagement," says University of San Diego Assistant Professor Colin Campbell. "The systems are designed to try to show you stuff that they think is going to actually make you excited or make you react in some way. And as a result, that tends to be the more polarizing stuff."But both sites have taken steps in 2020 to safeguard against misinformation.In a lengthy blog post about their election protocols, Twitter called their role in the election "critical," saying that people should "use Twitter respectfully and to recognize our collective responsibility to the electorate to guarantee a safe, fair, and legitimate democratic process."They adjusted their "Civic Integrity Policy" so that only verified and official accounts can tweet about election results. They're also imposing stricter punishments for Tweets calling for election interference or violence.Twitter also made changes to the way people interact with links posted on their platform.They've added warnings to misleading tweets and direct people to more credible information if they engage with a misleading post.They also now ask people to click on a link before Retweeting it and encourage "Quote Tweeting," where people can comment on what they're sharing instead of just reposting the original Tweet.Twitter also changed the format of its Trending section, adding context to topics and hashtags.Facebook, meanwhile, put a lot of effort into helping people vote. Their Voter Information Center helped 4.4 million people register to vote in 2020.They also banned all ads related to the election, politics, or other social issues during the entire month leading up to the election.To help keep misinformation from spreading, Facebook says they removed 120,000 posts from March through September for violating their Voter Interference Policies. They also issued 150 million warnings for content that was flagged as misleading by independent fact-checkers.Campbell says both platforms are a lot more reliable now than they were in 2016, but could still have done more. He believes it's because they didn't want to face criticism over censorship."From a pragmatic perspective, they probably don't want to get involved in the challenges of trying to go through and censor or decide what kind of stuff they want to have on the site," says Campbell.Even with all the changes, he says users still need to scroll with skepticism and filter the content they chose to engage with."I think it's very important that we're all vigilant," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate.
