With 20 electoral votes at stake, all eyes will be on Pennsylvania on Election Day. However, officials warn that counting the ballots could take days.In Bucks County, a heavily populated suburban county near Philadelphia has a population of about 628,000 people. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the county by a narrow lead with a few thousand votes. This time around, both presidential campaigns have been courting the suburban vote, and the suburban Philadelphia counties are considered critical. Polls across the state closed at 8 p.m. EST, and now the more than 2 million mail-in ballots the state has received can now be counted. “We sent out about 200,000 ballots, which is 10 times more than we did four years ago, and we've gotten back somewhere in the area 160,000,” said Bob Harvie, Bucks County, Pennsylvania Board of Elections Chairman. “We still have mail coming in obviously today that we can accept. We had U.P.S. dropping off some ballots. We've got drop boxes that will be emptied at 8, and those will be brought here, and we don't know how much will be in those.” In Pennsylvania, more than 2 million mail-in ballots have been returned so far. The state doesn’t have a lot of experience dealing with large amounts of mail-in ballots, unlike places like Colorado, Washing, and even Florida and Arizona, where ballots have been counted as they come in. However, in Bucks County, officials didn’t begin counting ballots until after the polls closed, and a handful of Pennsylvania counties won’t start counting until tomorrow. “It's been a big challenge. It has been, you know, primarily because we were not even able toopen the envelopes until today. And there's a security envelope. So, that's two envelopes you need to open. You need to be able to make sure that everything is on there, their name, their address, the date,” said Diane Marseglia, Bucks County Board of Elections. “So, you're checking for a lot of things all at the same time and then you're pulling it out, and then, you're going to start to gather them for a vote. That's a lot of time.”If the presidential race hinges on Pennsylvania, it’s possible we won’t know who won the presidency for days.E.W. When Sen. Bernie Sanders did this in 2013, he did it alone. On Wednesday, nearly four years later, Sanders introduced a new "Medicare for all" health care bill with a third of the Senate Democratic caucus by his side.Flanked at first by New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Sanders called the costs of the current system "insane and unaffordable," promising that the average family would benefit financially under his plan "because you will no longer be writing checks to private insurance companies."For those whose taxes would go up, he added, "that expense will be more than offset by the money are you are saving with the elimination of private insurance costs." 710

When I told friends that my wife and I were heading to Johannesburg -- which had just been hit by torrential rain and flooding — for a family wedding over Easter, they joked about how lucky we were to be able to take deep baths and long showers.Like many Capetonians, we've endured months of quick 90-second showers, bucket washes or baths that are only centimeters deep and grey water to flush the toilet or water our parched garden. 447

While recognizing that the 2020 presidential race has not been called yet, Democratic nominee Joe Biden said he expects to win the states of Pennsylvania and other key battleground states.A win in Pennsylvania would give Biden enough Electoral College votes to win the presidential election and become president-elect. Biden led the state of Pennsylvania by 29,000 votes as of late Friday. Twenty-four hours earlier, Biden trailed in the state, but was bolstered by mail-in voting numbers on Friday.Biden also leads in the states of Arizona, Nevada and Georgia.Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has vowed to fight the vote count in the four aforementioned states.“Joe Biden should not wrongfully claim the office of the President. I could make that claim also. Legal proceedings are just now beginning!” Trump tweeted on Friday. If the results hold, Trump would become the first one-term president since George H.W. Bush who lost in 1992 to Bill Clinton."And look at the national numbers: We’re going to win this race with a clear majority of the nation behind us," Biden said.Biden said that his transition team is not waiting to get to work.“Yesterday, Senator Harris and I held meetings with a group of experts on the public health and economic crises our country is facing,” Biden said. “The pandemic is getting significantly more worrisome all across the country. Daily cases are skyrocketing, and it is now believed that we could see spikes as high as 200,000 cases in a single day.”Biden then addressed the economy.“More than 20 million people are on unemployment. Millions are worried about making rent and putting food on the table,” Biden said. “Our economic plan will put a focus on a path to a strong recovery.”Biden concluded the speech by urging civility in politics as protests across the country continued.“My responsibility as President will be to represent the whole nation. And I want you to know — that I will work as hard for those who voted against me as for those who voted for me,” Biden said. 2024
