CYPRESS, Calif. -- It’s Friday the 13th and finals week at Cypress College in Southern California. A chilling combination for some, but for other students it’s just another day at school. They’re studying for a career that’s not for everybody – but a career that will eventually impact just about everyone. These students are prepping for their final exams in mortuary science, a degree where they can make a living while dealing with death.“This is from what I’ve learned is a gasket casket,” said Karla Ruiz, a Cypress College mortuary science student. Ruiz has a goal of advancing her career from a local morgue to national security. “I’m really into watching a bunch of CIA stuff or like crime stuff,” she said. “So, I want to find something that can open the door for that.” Cypress College is one of about 60 colleges across the country that offer this kind of end-of-life education. It may seem like a grim career choice, but the mortuary science industry is now attracting different kind of demographics. “As far as male female it’s certainly changed,” said Damon de la Cruz, Cypress College mortuary science assistant professor. “It wouldn’t be hard for us to see in a graduating class of 20 something like three males and 17 females. It’s really shifted in that direction.” It’s a direction where there’s now a growing demand for qualified workers. “There’s not enough students to meet the demand of the community,” de la Cruz said. “As result of that many of our students are placed or they get hired before they even graduate.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual wage for morticians, undertakers and funeral directors is more than ,000 a year. Funeral service managers can make closer to ,000. “I’ve been in this industry for a long time and I’ve had many opportunities presented to me to where I’ve grown, been able to afford a house, and be able to live comfortably in southern California,” said Harbor Lawn Mortuary funeral director Michael Roudebush. Roudebush has hired several Cypress College students through the years. He says a career in mortuary science can be financially rewarding but also emotionally draining “Empathetic and compassionate people are what we’re always looking for,” Roudebush said. “We are people too and we’ve been through what the families have been through. We all experience loss.” Back on the college campus, students like Ruiz are gaining an understanding of death that they can use for a lifetime. She says that after studying death, she now appreciates life more. “Ever since doing this I’m closer to my family,” she said. “I actually want to go home and hang out with them.”A celebration of life that comes from knowing exactly what others have lost. 2746

A Florida judge has denied a request for a temporary injunction to block the Palm Beach County mask mandate.Attorneys for a group of Palm Beach County residents filed a lawsuit claiming that the county's emergency order requiring masks in public places to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus was unconstitutional.Judge John Kastrenakes issued his ruling Monday morning."The right to be 'free from governmental intrusion' does not automatically or completely shield an individual's conduct from regulation," Kastrenakes wrote in his 13-page order. "More to the point, constitutional rights and the ideals of limited government do not absolve a cititzen from the real-world consequences of their individual choices, or otherwise allow them to wholly shirk their social obligation to their fellow Americans or to society as a whole. This is particularly true when one's individual choices can result in drastic, costly and sometimes deadly consequences to others."Kastrenakes went on to say that there is no "constitutional or protected right to infect others."Commissioners voted unanimously last month to approve the mask mandate, despite objections from an impassioned group of residents who spoke against such an ordinance.County Administrator Verdenia Baker last week extended the order for an additional 30 days. It now remains in effect until at least Aug. 23.Mayor Dave Kerner said Friday that the county is in the process of mailing about 3 million masks to residents."As this community tries desperately to navigate the tumultuous seas presented by COVID-19, it is reasonable and logical that our elected officials are throwing the citizens of Palm Beach County a lifeline in an attempt to ameliorate the spread of this deadly, unbridled and widespread disease," Kastrenakes concluded. "Based on the evidence, this court will not second guess the manner in which a co-equal branch of government sought to discharge its sacred duty to protect the general public."A statement from the Florida Civil Rights Coalition, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the plaintiffs, said Kastrenakes "unsurprisingly" denied the motion, "paving the way for continued government tyranny under the guise of disease prevention in Palm Beach County."Attorneys for the plaintiffs argued during a hearing last week that the mask mandate infringes upon their clients' constitutional rights.In their statement, attorneys claim the ruling "disregards fundamental rights like freedom of speech and the right to medical self-determination protected by the Florida Constitution."The Florida Civil Rights Coalition plans to appeal the ruling. BOWIE, Md. -- Nestled away on a college campus sits a student lounge unlike any found at a typical college. “You're thinking someplace you can relax, you know, some place you can kind of just let your hair down for a moment,” said Christina Becton, a nursing student at Bowie State University in Maryland. On more than one occasion she’s found herself hungry and headed to the university’s new “nutritional lounge.” It’s a place where students can come and get food they can’t afford. “There is certainly a financial constraint being in college,” Becton said. Inside, there’s comfy seating, a flat screen TV and a jar for “suggestions” of food students would like to see featured on the shelves. Yet, the words “food pantry” are nowhere to be found there, for one main reason. “There is a stigma and we want the students to know that we're here to support them. We want to make sure that you know they don't feel this any sense of shame,” said Dr. Aminta Breaux, president of Bowie State, Maryland’s first Historically Black College and University.She said most of their 6,100 students are commuter students. DENVER, Colo. -- Nobody prepares to be sexually assaulted. Irene Wilke never thought about it. Not for herself and not for her daughter. “It’s very difficult, knowing that harm has come to your child,” said Wilke. Over the summer, Wilke experienced a worst-case scenario for a parent. Her adult daughter was sexually assaulted, twice. “To have to hold your child’s hand as she recounts the events to the police and to the hospital,” said Wilke. Anyone who’s familiar with a rape examination knows it’s not pleasant. “The exam itself, it’s invasive, I mean, I’m looking all over at their entire body, but I don’t feel like it’s a bad experience. We want to empower our patients,” said Michelle Metz who runs the sexual assault examination unit for Denver Health. And most of the time in those cases, police have to take those victims’ clothes as evidence. “So, if a patient’s wearing the same clothing from the incident, we, law enforcement, likes to collect that clothing because it’s potentially a good space to get evidence from. But when we collect that clothing, so they don’t get that to go home with,” said Metz. “The hospital and the police are left trying to figure out how to come up with replacement clothing for them,” said Wilke. That’s what happened to Wilke’s daughter. The police took her clothes, so Wilke had to send her boyfriend out to get her daughter new clothes. “You’ve just listened to her recount this story, this horrific story, and they, they actually take her into another room, and do the SANE exam, commonly known as a rape kit, and it’s during that process that they took her clothes. And to have the nurse tell you, she’s going to need something when she comes out,” said Wilke. Now Wilke is doing something about the clothing problem. A few weeks ago, she started her organization, AFTER. She collects women's clothes to donate to hospitals, so they have something to wear home after these exams. “Just imagine yourself, if it were you, what would you want to start your first steps after,” said Wilke. Recently, she dropped off a donation box at one of her favorite breakfast spots. But, there was already clothes waiting for her. “I never thought of that gap between the system where they just need that immediate help, that, right now I need clothes immediately, I just think it’s fantastic what she’s doing,” said Jill Hope, manager at Sunrise Sunset. “And we picked up a carload of donations, from the employees here... my heart is touched, hearts touched,” said Willke. Wilke isn’t the only one trying to solve this problem. “The main output that we do is produce Fear2Freedom Aftercare and Icare kits which are then given to survivors of sexual assault,” said Tricia Russell, the executive director of Fear2Freedom. The organization was founded by a rape survivor in Virginia, who went on to accompany college students who’d been raped, who would show up at hospitals in the area. “And she realized that the students were having to leave in hospital gowns and scrubs. Just things that she thought were no appropriate for them to have to be leaving in. You’ve already been traumatized and humiliated and now you’re just adding to that,” said Russell. "You don't want to stand out, after you leave, and if you walk out of here in paper scrubs or a gown, you definitely would stand out," said Metz. So she started collecting clothes to give to the hospitals. “It’s t-shirts, underwear, sweatpants, it has toiletries so they can take a shower, so they can brush their teeth, brush their hair, and then it has some therapy items in the kits as well,” said Russel. According to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), an American is sexually assaulted every 73 seconds. That’s more than 1,100 people every day. Michelle’s unit at Denver Health saw more than 400 victims last year. “We’ve already seen 40 patients this month.” For Wilke, the assaults robbed her of something most moms love to do with their daughters. “How do you go shopping? Shopping for your daughter’s clothes is something that’s supposed to be fun, you know? You go to lunch, you go shopping. Not I got to go find some clothes because your child's clothes are taken into evidence.” But she’s not going to let that be the end of her story. Wilke will take her carload of clothes and try and make sure that the next person to go to the hospital after being assaulted will have something clean and comfortable to go home in. “Something fresh, something new, something that they can start their life after in fresh clean clothes.” 4574
