Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks.After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023

A man killed four people during a stabbing rampage in Southern California before officers found his car parked outside a 7-Eleven convenience store and arrested him, authorities said.In addition to the people killed, the attacker left two wounded in multiple crime scenes in Garden Grove and Santa Ana, police said.The victims killed included two people at the suspect's apartment complex, a 7-Eleven security guard and one more person at a Subway restaurant.Apartment stabbings: 2 killedThe mayhem started Wednesday when police received a burglary call shortly after 4 p.m. local time, Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said. Two people said they'd come home and found their apartment burglarized.As officers prepared to respond to the apartment burglary, another call came in about 20 minutes later about a robbery at a bakery in Garden Grove in which an unknown amount of cash was taken.The same suspect broke into the apartment then drove his silver Mercedes to the bakery, police said. From the bakery, he returned to the apartment, got into an altercation and fatally stabbed two people, Whitney said.The suspect lived in the same apartment complex and it's unclear whether he knew the victims. At the time, officers did not know that the apartment and bakery incidents were connected.Gas station and business: 2 woundedJust after 6 p.m., officers got a robbery siren alarm at an insurance business in Garden Grove. The suspect had stabbed a woman at the business, stolen money and taken off, police said. "This female employee was very brave. This guy was armed with knives -- she fought as best as she could," Whitney said.By then, officers had talked to several witnesses and realized it was the same suspect involved in the previous incidents. "I've worked here for 30 years. This is the first time I've ever seen something like this where we have a suspect kill four people in one day and attack other people that are just innocent victims. The suspect came out carrying a knife and a handgun, and police confronted him and arrested him, authorities said. Investigators discovered he'd stabbed the security guard to death and cut out his gun from his belt, Whitney said.While clearing the scene, they were told the suspect had also killed one person during a robbery at a Subway restaurant before he went to the 7-Eleven -- both in Santa Ana, police said. Bobby Dyer, mayor of the coastal Virginia city, told CNN, standing across the street from the multistory brick building where the massacre happened."I guess the big question is why. We want to know, too."Authorities said DeWayne Craddock, 40, a certified professional engineer in the city's public utilities department, opened fire on all three floors of Building 2 of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center at the end of Friday's workday.Craddock killed a dozen people and injured others, and sent terrified witnesses running out of the building or hiding under desks before dying at the end of a lengthy gunbattle there with four police officers, authorities said.Eleven of the 12 killed were city employees. The other was a contractor who was there to fill a permit, City Manager Dave Hansen said.Officials are now left not only answering questions about what happened but also dealing with the deaths of their colleagues.
