Rep. Steve King, the Iowa Republican who was stripped of his congressional committee assignments earlier this year, was not allowed to fly aboard Air Force One on Tuesday as President Donald Trump traveled to Iowa, two GOP officials say.King, who represents the state's 4th District in Western Iowa, asked the White House to join the President's entourage, but administration officials rejected the request, two officials familiar with the matter told CNN.Republican Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Deb Fischer of Nebraska joined Trump aboard Air Force One. Ernst had not been planning to travel with the President, citing her voting schedule, but ended up flying to Iowa with Trump.King declined to comment about the snub, telling CNN on Wednesday morning that he had nothing to say about the matter.Instead of cruising back to Washington on Air Force One, King buckled himself into seat 1A and sipped a cup of coffee on an American Airlines flight back to the nation's capital. He attended the Republican Party of Iowa's fundraising dinner in West Des Moines on Tuesday evening. He faces a primary challenge in his re-election bid next year. While King has a history of making incendiary remarks around race and immigration, King was removed from his committee assignments and rebuked by members of his own party after giving an interview with The New York Times in January in which he made racist comments. In the article, King, as part of a defense of what he said was the "culture of America," asked how certain terms had become controversial in modern discourse."White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?" he told the Times. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"King said on the House floor in January that he rejected the ideology of white nationalism and he maintains that his comments were misinterpreted. The House Republican Steering Committee removed King from his committee posts shortly after the comments were publicized in January.Despite the controversy, King refused to step aside from his post in Congress and announced in February he'll run for re-election in 2020. He won his race in 2018 by 3.6 percentage points. 2256

Scientists have long warned of the effects of global warming and the possibility of more intense wildfires that burn for longer periods of time. Now, a new team of researchers is hoping to get a better understanding of how the smoke travels and what the tiniest particles could be doing to our lungs. "There's many things we’re still struggling to understand about smoke,” explains Joshua Schwarz, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The group of researchers includes meteorologists and weather modelers, in addition to scientists. “All together, we are deciding which fires to target," Schwarz says. Amber Soja, with NASA, describes herself as the “fire person” of the group. Every day for the next couple of weeks, this group will create a flight plan, opening the door for another group of scientists inside this flying laboratory. “We've got tremendous range, and we're carrying a tremendous payload of information,” Soja says. This lab was once an Italian passenger airliner. It flies straight into the smoke of fires. "We'll have to look at what's the altitude of the smoke we want to be in, which direction is the smoke going, how far can we track that smoke," Schwarz says.Intake tubes on the outside of the lab bring in smoke particles that will be studied. Researchers are interested in learning how the smoke travels and what it does to our bodies when it’s inhaled. Pete Lahm, with the U.S. Forest Service, says studying the smoke is important because it impacts both public health and safety. “This info will help us make in the long run [make] better decisions on when we ignite fire and how we consider smoke impacts, and that's absolutely critical to our mission,” Lahm says. Some places are looking empty right now, including doctor's offices and emergency rooms.A poll from Morning Consult and the American College of Emergency Physicians shows that 29% of adults in the United States have avoided or delayed medical care due to concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus.Medical experts stress that routine visits are still necessary for both children and adults. Even emergency room visits can be necessary.“There are people who are having stroke-like symptoms and they don't come to the emergency department,” said Dr. William Jaquis, President of the American College of Emergency Physicians. “If they had, they would've had different types of treatment. But they delayed doing that, and their results and their outcomes are worse than they could have been.”Doctors say people absolutely need to come into the ER if they're experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain, stroke-like symptoms, or if you've recently experienced a bad injury.Hospitals and doctors’ offices are taking their own precautions. All healthcare providers must wear a mask, as should patients. If patients don't have a mask, they are given one. Rooms are also cleaned extensively.“You are coming often into rooms that are isolated, single rooms, which are not exposing you to other patients. So, there's a whole range of things to make sure we're keeping our departments as safe as they can be,” said Jaquis. In fact, doctors’ offices are better able to enforce social distancing during this time because of the low volume of patients.Experts have found some people may be avoiding the doctor's office as a way to avoid putting strain on the healthcare system. 1675
