NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday urged all parties to seize "new opportunities" to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the remarks in a meeting on Iran with his counterparts from the United States, Russia, Britain, France and Germany in New York."At present, there are new opportunities in advancing the diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue," Yang said."All parties should use the positive elements in the current circumstances to further enhance diplomatic efforts so as to push the Iranian nuclear issue back to the track of dialogue."Yang said that China will continue to play a "constructive role " in the international community's effort to find "a comprehensive, lasting and fair" solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.A statement issued after the foreign ministers' meeting called for an "early negotiated solution" to the Iranian nuclear issue.The foreign ministers are "ready to engage with Iran," the statement said.The six-nation ministerial meeting on Iran was held on the sidelines of a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Scores of rescuers on Saturday night slowly made their way through dust-filled underground tunnels to continue searching for 16 miners who were trapped following a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan province.Twenty-one miners have been confirmed dead in the accident, local work safety authorities said, while 239 out of the 276 miners who were working underground escaped after the gas leak occurred at about 6 a.m. in a small coal mine in Yuzhou city."The thick dust in the shaft is hampering the rescue. We must clear the dust first. We have located the trapped miners already," said Du Bo, an engineer with the mine's parent company who participated in the rescue.He said more than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust were in the pit due to damage caused by the gas leak.The conditions of the missing miners remains unknown. Officials said the miners were located 50 to 80 meters down the shaft from the entrance to the pit."Fortunately, there was no gas explosion. Otherwise, the consequence would be disastrous," a rescuer surnamed Wang told reporters. He said most of the victims were believed to have suffocated.Officials said work crews are struggling to retrieve the remains of the victims from the mine.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp. It was hit by a similar gas and coal leak in 2008. Twenty-three people died in that accident.Ironically, miners were working underground to improve accident prevention measures when the gas leak occurred on Saturday.Billboards reading "Safety is a fortune of the family; Safety is of heavenly importance to our miners" hung at the entrance of the mine.Guo Gengmao, governor of Henan, and Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety, supervised the rescue efforts.Authorities are investigating the cause of the gas burst.The accident occurred as people around the globe watched in awe during the rescue of 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for more than two months. China's work safety officials and experts said there are lessons to learn from Chile's dramatic rescue."Mining accidents in China usually claim heavy loss of lives. The lack of modern emergency response systems is a key factor," said Liu Tiemin, a researcher with the China Academy of Safety Sciences and Technology.Gas leaks in China's coal mines left 341 people dead in the first half of this year.Of note, the fatality rates have actually decreased in recent months as the country's senior officials ordered the industry to strengthen safety measures.China closed 7,466 illegal mines in four years, from 2006 to 2009. BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China is expressing its concern about the European Union's investigations into Chinese-made wireless wide area networking (WWAN) modems, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Thursday.Yao Jian, the spokesman, made the remarks after the EU said it was conducting an anti-subsidy investigation into the devices.The EU launched investigations of anti-dumping and supporting measures on the WWAN modems from China on June 30, 2010. It is the first time the EU has made simultaneous triple investigations on a China-made product, Yao said.The move is unheard of for World Trade Organization members when dealing with trade remedy cases in practice, Yao said. The Chinese public and people working in the industry showed strong dissatisfaction towards the EU's practice.The WWAN modems are high-tech products that are constantly updated. These Chinese-made modems promote the advances of the technology and created new market fields which benefited the EU consumers, Yao said.The EU's investigations will disrupt normal trade and hurt the interests of EU consumers, he said.Yao further stated that the EU's move is also running counter to the deepening China-EU friendship.He said he hoped the EU could take actions based upon relevant laws and the facts and keep their promise on being opposed to trade protectionism, lest it damages China-EU economic and trade relations and also the EU economy.China will take corresponding measures within the rules of the World Trade organization in due time, he added.The investigation is the largest trade remedy investigation case against China, involving a total value of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars in exports.Wireless modems send or receive data as a radio signal.The 27-member EU is China's biggest trade partner. While the EU's main exports to China include industrial machinery, transport equipment, chemicals and high-end consumer goods.Concerning the request for consultations from the United States about China's alleged anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on U.S.steel exports and China's policies on the electronic payment market, China has received the request and will resolve the issue based upon WTO rules, said MOC officials.U.S. trade representative Ron Kirk filed a statement with the WTO Wednesday, claiming China imposes duties on U.S. steel exports and discriminates against suppliers of electronic payment services from the U.S.China's policies on electronic payment services are consistent with the country's commitment to the WTO and the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on U.S.-made steel are also in line with WTO rules, according to the MOC.U.S. is China's second largest trade partner.
