Attorney General William Barr is back on Capitol Hill Wednesday to testify at another hearing on the Justice Department budget that's sure to be filled with more swirling questions over special counsel Robert Mueller's report.Barr is appearing before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee one day after he testified before a House subcommittee and answered many -- though not all -- questions from lawmakers about the release of Mueller's nearly 400 page report.At the House hearing, Barr said he expected to release a redacted version of the Mueller report within a week, with plans to color-code redactions and provide an explanation for why material was not released publicly.But Barr sparred with House Democrats who pressed him on why he would not release grand jury material or provide the full, unredacted Mueller report to Congress."I don't intend at this stage to send the full, unredacted report to the committee," Barr said, adding that wouldn't ask a court to release grand jury material "Until someone shows me a provision" that allows it to be released.In the House, Barr was squaring off with Democrats who have subpoena power and have already authorized a subpoena in the Judiciary Committee to obtain the full Mueller report and underlying evidence. Democratic lawmakers expressed frustration after the hearing that Barr wouldn't answer certain questions, such as whether the White House had been briefed about the Mueller report.In the Republican-controlled Senate, the threat of a subpoena is significantly lower for Barr, but he'll still have to face off with Democratic senators who are likely to push him on the report redactions as well as his four-page summary of Mueller's conclusions.Three Democrats on the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee are also members of the Senate Judiciary Committee where will Barr will testify on the Mueller report next month, including the top Judiciary Committee Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California. Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham is also a member of the appropriations subcommittee and will question Barr Wednesday ahead of the May 1 hearing in his committee.Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, one of the Democrats on both committees, told CNN this week that he wanted to ask Barr about "the thoroughness of his redactions.""If this is a 400-page report ... to send us a four-page summary that just talks about the high-level conclusions is potentially misleading," Coons said. An English teacher with Metro Nashville Public Schools has been placed on leave pending a disciplinary review for a homework some parents considered to be inappropriate. The assignment itself has sparked conversation about race and how to handle tough subjects in the classroom.The homework in question was assigned to 30 students at Cane Ridge High School in Antioch as they discussed "Fences," a play and film adaptation exploring the topic of race as a father struggles to provide for his family. The handout given to students asked them to write a one-page paper on the derogatory term "n-word" and answer several questions including how the word is racist and how it is used. In the assignment provided by a parent, the term was spelled out. The play uses the language frequently. The parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she was hurt and felt the conversation about race and derogatory terms should be taught by parents and not the school. She wanted more awareness about how sensitive the topic is and preferred prior notification. The teacher involved has been with MNPS since 2015 and received no disciplinary actions in the past. Spokesperson Sean Braisted of MNPS said the assignment has been retracted and canceled. In a statement, MNPS Director Dr. Adrienne Battle said, “The homework assignment given out at Cane Ridge High School was offensive, inappropriate, and out-of-line with the standards of MNPS. I sincerely apologize to students, families, and community members who may experience pain or trauma as a result of this incident.""It's difficult for sure in this particular context if the assignment is appropriate, but based on what I see, those are the kinds of questions we need to engage with our young people," said Cornelius Vanderbilt Distinguished Professor of Education Richard Milner.Milner said having deep conversations on tough subjects like this is in the classroom is essential and can be beneficial to help young people engage in difficult conversations outside of the classroom. However, he stresses a lot of work is required to communicate the meaning and history behind the word beforehand."Thinking about and asking young people to engage with the word without talking and being deliberate about the historical nature of it can do more harm than good," he said.Milner said while most teachers tend to have really good intentions, sometimes teachers are unprepared to address what might be considered the difficult issues, and should have proper tools. Since the incident, a student started an online petition showing support for the teacher. So far it has garnered more than 800 virtual signatures. The student said the teacher is "being persecuted for trying to prepare us for the real world by gifting us with the ability to think critically."Battle said the actions of the teacher will be investigated by Human Resources. An attorney says a Maryland man who was shot and killed by a police officer was asleep in his bedroom when police opened fire from outside his house. The 21-year-old man's girlfriend was also wounded. The Montgomery County Police Department said in a news release Friday that Duncan Socrates Lemp “confronted” police and was fatally shot by one of the officers early Thursday. An attorney for Lemp’s relatives said police couldn't have any justification for shooting Lemp based on what she has heard. Lemp's family says the warrant police obtained to search their Potomac home doesn’t mention any “imminent threat.” A police spokesman didn’t immediately respond to the family’s statement. 700
