SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing.The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. "Now people in America are starting to embrace it."The homes are pricey. Models in Lennar's Sterling Heights development run between .7 and million. For Benjamin Prado, "Deportation" is always on his mind. "We see a policy of terror," Prado said. As a community advocate for 'American Friends Service Committee,' he connects migrants with various services. He has worked with those who were arrested at the Zion Market ICE Raid in February 2019."Whether people have documents or not, people have the right to work, and people have the right to produce and create a meaningful life for themselves," Prado said. Saturday, President Trump disagreed saying, "Everybody that came into the country illegally will be brought out of the country very legally."So even when the President announced that he would delay the planned nationwide ICE Raids initially scheduled to begin Sunday, Prado's work remains the same. "We are on a permanent campaign of informing families what their rights are," Prado said. "What their constitutional rights are, ensuring that they know that they don't have to speak to immigration law-enforcement, that they don't have to open the door, that they should demand to see any form of warrants that they have, whether it be judicial or administrative warrants that ICE produces."In a Tweet Saturday, Gavin Newsom agreed saying, "When we talk about knowing your rights, 'no abras la puerta.' SAN DIEGO — Football icon Drew Brees gave a Temecula, California teenager the gift of a lifetime this week.The New Orleans Saints QB surprised Alex Ruiz at a Del Mar flag football event with a prosthetic leg."Surprise," Brees yelled into a microphone.Ruiz suffered a severe leg injury while playing football in October 2017. The quarterback at Linfield Christian School in Temecula was rolling out of the pocket when he was tackled and injured. San Diego is weighing major new rules that would ban people from living in their cars near schools and homes.The proposal would block anyone from living in their cars within 500 feet of a school or residence, and also prohibit them from living in their cars on most other city streets between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.San Diegans living in their cars have had free reign since a judge ruled in August that its current laws were too vague. That's led to concerns from some residents in beach areas, who say they have seen people drinking in cars, as well as urinating and defecating on neighborhood streets. "I used to feel very safe walking around throughout La Jolla, Pacific Beach and everything, and there's a lot of times I don't feel as safe as I used to," said Sarah Bonesteel, a Crown Point resident. The issue of in-car living has grown along with San Diego's high housing costs. The car is one of the last pieces of shelter a homeless person may possess, Mayor Kevin Faulconer noted Tuesday. At a news conference, the mayor announced that the city would open an additional parking lot for people to legally sleep in their cars. It will be in the overflow lot across from SDCCU Stadium, providing access to housing and other services."The goal for every person or family staying here will be to access resources to get back into long-term housing," Faulconer said. Meanwhile, the city's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee will consider the citywide restrictions Wednesday.
